Deniss Vasiljevs

Ah, I went and watched the NHK interview again, because a gifset on tumblr alerted me to a certain something at 1:46 and my heart melted.
That song would be perfect for Deniss, Frank Sinatra would fit him like a glove. I hope he skates to it sometime. :o:

Hot off the press: Deniss will compete at Cup of Tyrol! Which is now in November apparently! So we won't have to wait until December to see him :yahoo: What a great surprise!
Diana, Noah and Noemie will also be there. And here I was just thinking what competition could Deniss attend between now and Latvian Nationals

He should have a good shot of winning that one! Chafik would probably be the only one who could beat him, and I don't know about his form since he was ill & just w/d from the French GP.

Well, it’s not your silly idea! Some days ago I happened to speak to the person who is pro in skating and she told that it is true. There are some fundamental reasons for it. One of which is a high level of injuries and the fall of popularity of figure skating at least in Europe. Nobody knows exactly (might be Stephane knows) how it is going to be carried out, but it could be a good chance for those skaters who are more artistic and emotional.
She also told that there are some skaters who for one reason or other can’t do complicated high-revolution jumps.
It means that even if Deniss doesn’t master all the quads properly, his versatile talents will be appreciated.

You are absolutely right - it's good that under Stephane's supervision none of his students have got injuries.

It’s a pity but I had only a couple of hours to translate Deniss’ interview, so I couldn’t outline everything but he himself started speaking about quads. He told that he is working on them a lot, and the progress is tangible. Right now he has been mastering four quads, but he is moving on step by step. He thinks that figure skaters practically do all six jumps in the same way. It’s just emotions, the skating skills, the speed, the interpretation, the harmony between music and movements which make them different.

He was asked how skaters disclose their character and personality. He answered that it is still a mystery to himself. In all types of art people express their soul. The same is on the ice-my performance is a part of me, my soul. It’s my passion to art, to figure skating.

Some words about his injury. He said that he is cured, but any injury leaves its impact for life. He said that he has learned a lot due to the injury.

FOUR QUADS??!?!? :O Now that's some new info there. I can think of only three: toe loop, salchow, maybe lutz.. but the last one is a mystery to me. Maybe it's quad axel lololololol XD

Anyway, thank you for sharing this piece of news AgnesR.

P.S: which interview is this? I'm curious, that's all :)

I had half expected him to be there. It would be nice for him to put in one more international competition this year, and Golden Spin might be too close to their big trip to Japan for XOI. I was there to see him this March, so tempted to go back this time around but I don't think it's possible :sad4: But Innsbruck is not far from Champery, fairly easily accessible by driving (about 6hrs), so Cup of Tyrol might become their regular stop, as well as Lombardia (even closer from Champery!) :hap85: and Nebelhorn in Obersdorf in the future.

About his PCS, a B.ESP commentator went so far as to say the way he moves to music is superior to anyone in the field, which includes Jason Brown. This is an enormous compliment :agree: While I am not sure he is exactly "superior" to Jason at this point, both are too special to be compared - one thing to consider is he is only 18, and what he is already capable of artistically, with such fluidity and spontaneity - it can only continue to improve even further, just as his coach did back when he was at Deniss's age. I can only hope that he will continue to cultivate this god-given talent of his, and not sacrifice in any way just to attain a quad or two.

You never know, Deniss' 3A is pretty big ;)

On a more sensible note, maybe quad loop? His 3Lo is high enough. I don't think his flip would be suitable. But then if he has been practicing 4F, it would explain why he seems to be having trouble with his 3F, because it might be messing up his timing. That would also explain the difference between his 3lzes in the free, which had a little bit shaky landings, and the perfect one he did in the gala when he'd had time to settle down. I think once he gets more distance on his jumps quads will come easily to him, since most of his jumps are high but don't cover much of the ice.

Does anyone know if Deniss has a nickname? I saw some people on twitter calling him Дениска (Google tells me 'Deniska'). Lots of people on here call Evgenia Zhenya, Dmitri Dima, and so on, so I thought it might be fun if Deniss had one too.

Yes, Дениска / Deniska is used for an endearing form of Denis in Russian language, or in general adding -ka, or -shka, -chka at the end of the name.. you might have heard Lipnitskaya being called "Yulechka", or famous Russian chocolate "Alyonka", which is taken from "Aljona". Another tricky thing about Russian pronounciation while we are at it... in Russian his name is pronounced "DeNEEEs", like the girl name "Denise". Not the way Dennis is pronounced in English. - Good to remember when you have a chance to meet him and have to call him out ;)

Ok! :) Thanks for the info. Though meeting him in person is very unlikely for me :sad4:

Deniss updated his instastory today as it has finally snowed in Champery. 'Winter has come'

It's the same interview from Latvian Sports Magazine which I posted on 10.31.2017 and 11.02.2017. I quickly checked the article. Everything is correct. Let's hope we'll see them all some day in the future!

I would like to add something. It’s right that Russians have endearing forms for most of their first names. They are used casually by friends, classmates, parents, other relatives and so on. They are always connected with the real names, but nicknames can be related to the personality, appearance or activities somebody is doing. In Latvian we also actively use these forms for Russian names because they are usually easy to pronounce and sometimes are simply sweet. But we don’t use “Deniska” because phonetically it is difficult to pronounce. Actually in Russian it is not pronounced as Denise [deni:z (s)]. They palatalize (make soft) one or two letters (d,s). It means that if you have a chance to meet him (who knows!), you can pronounce his name in the same way as in English and Latvian. He uses the Latvian form –Deniss Vasiljevs.
So there is a place for a nickname. In my family we have one. It was invented by our granny. She loves his skating, philosophy, intelligence and his open heart. She declares that today there are not many young people like him. We feel a bit jealous!(a joke).

Some great candid photos of Deniss and Stephane from NHK practice. (Edit: I just realised Deniss has the most pics there! 6 of him (2 of those with Stephane) to Med's 5 haha :agree:)
A nice gif from the gala, with Caro, and a lovely smile from backstage too. :)

Deniss smile (a little bit "sharky") comes from the TV coverage before the gala https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QtrNicWM_ZM; 1:08 his drawing is shown and then he himself appears in 3:01 (first his legs, then his smile - Japanese cameraman knows what to take :luv17:), and few seconds later he talks with Cong (brotherhood of claret tops? ;)).
The off rink photos are so cute!

I forgot to share this story. I was there at COR, I saw him and Lambiel walking around right beside me. I gave them my gift and they’re really nice to accept it. Fans at CoR stood up after his performance. He is really charming on the ice.

I didn't notice it at all  I was distracted by comfy Deniss with his hoodie zipped up all the way :o: Cute!

It was someting that struck me too: how relaxed was Deniss and how comfortable he felt.

I was looking trough the photos on Absolute Skating page and found pictures I didn't know: from the summer camp 2016, when Deniss started his adventure with Stephane as a coach. Please have a look: http://www.absoluteskating.com/index.php?cat=photogallery&id=2016camp3s - pictures 4-6. I hardly recognized Deniss: his face shows not only a focus, but something more, probably simple a pain he suffered then. And comparing it with the picture http://www.absoluteskating.com/index.php?cat=photogallery&id=2017rostelecomcupdaily-extra (image 20) I can see how much his mood has been changed.

Incidentally, Deniss&Stephane is visibly the most frequently photographed student-coach team during the events. What is totally understandable

The first set of images were shot shortly after his arrival at Stephane's camp as his new student - thus I can understand he was still tense and a bit nervous, not sure how he will be accepted there, and of course his issues with his thigh. And as we all know, it didn't take long for both of them to realize they were an ideal team :agree:

I have noticed that, for Christmas on Ice in Japan this time around, only Deniss's name has been added so far. I wouldn't be surprised if Stephane will be eventually announced as well, but I also wouldn't be surprised if Stephane declined the invitation for this time, and for a change let Deniss shine on his own (especially considering his overwhelming popularity there), as they have become so famous as a team and Stephane may be concerned that Deniss needs an opportunity and attention on his own, not always associated with him.

I suppose there are Swiss Nationals at the same time (15-16 Dec.) and it is priority for Stephane to be there. But you are right, Deniss obviously was encouraged to go to Japan alone. Great to know that he's been invited not always as a part of a student-coach team :p

This weekend I see another conflict of interest: Cup of Tyrol (4 students) - or Japanese Jr Nationals (one student, but very important event)... Which one will Stephan chose? :scratch2:

Anyway, winter is coming, so we will see more Deniss :luv17: Cup of Tyrol, Latvian Nationals, Christmas on Ice, Villars on Ice, Music on Ice - all in next 7 weeks. I can't wait!

I *think* Koshiro will skate at Senior Japanese nationals like last year...but not sure. Either way, a packed schedule! I’m excited to see Deniss so much next month.
