Gabriella Papadakis & Guillaume Cizeron

Wow so many interesting posts since Friday, I need to take some time to read all of them :)

Big thanks to Gabriella and Guillaume, they delivered outstanding performances at both Cup of China and Internationaux de France.

Score wise, they managed to beat the FD WR and the overall WR twice within 2 weeks.
In addition, they are the first couple to break the 200pts threshold, also they broke it twice within 2 weeks!
And they finally broke the FD 120pts threshold in Grenoble...
It's just unbelievable but not that surprising considering their talent, their motivation, their engagement and the fact they worked like hell in the past months.

I know it's crazy ! It will give them the confidence boost they need going as #1 in the GPF.
Well Alain I hope you enjoyed your time there, it must have been great !

But she already added this sudden arm movement which fits the music on the 3rd spin, so doing it on the 2nd as well would be too repetitive. I actually like that new move, it adds some energy to that last spin, which was not working so well in the choreography.
About the delay, I don't see it, but I might not be as perceptive. Everything looked much sharper, faster for the presto and on the beat than in CoC, to my untrained eyes at least.
As for the dress, you're right the rip was still there. I wonder if this is superstition: let's keep the dress from WR breaking CoC. They'll have to do something eventually, but I'd love for them to keep those costumes which are perfect imo. I especially love the back of her dress, elegant and a bit sensual tbh.

i see the delay and then sometimes I don't.......I wonder if it has to do with broadcasts and their being a delay between the visual and audio signal (except I see it on parts of each broadcast and not on others)

The costumes for the free I like. But, you know, they are French; I'm sure L'ateliers de Chanel could knock up a version with exquisite embroidery based on those designs: it could be the gift of one artist to another: and a collaboration in the tradition of a company whose founder collaborated with Stravinsky and the Ballet Russes: there is promotional, synergistic opportunity there to be had. Plus they typically change their costumes for the short dance, but with the costumes this year being more complex for the short, I think it's more likely they will change them for the free. Plus if the costumes are to be decorated- doing really good decoration does take time, so those could be in the making. Either way, i won't be disappointed..... I just think it could be one more thing that goes towards brewing the perfect storm....

I know there are many who don't like Ed Sheeran's 'Shape of You' for their SD, but I've always actually liked the piece even before they chose it for the program. :-)

I know I was taken aback at first when I heard their choice but then listening to it, I really don't get the hate for that song. There has been much worse. It's catchy enough and not offensive. Maybe, people don't like Ed Sheeran himself. I don't know. On the other hand, I can understand critics wishing genuine latino songs being used but somehow, I sense the hate is directly about the song itself. Maybe people expected something less mainstream and more classy from them, even though I don't find it tacky myself, just mindless fun dancing out on a friday evening.
Anyway, Thanks for the links. That first one was quite the sexy outtake on samba ...

I like that idea very much. I hope they read your comment ;)

I wonder if it has something to do with when the audio and video are from different recording sources and are then put together. I've done some basic video recording this way and syncing the two sources can be tricky. Also, may be the broadcast signal as you said, icetigger. I notice it can happen for digital signals if the internet speed is not up to par.

It may be both the singer and song. From YouTube comments I've seen, some just abhor Ed Sheeran. I play classical piano so I actually found myself reacting at first to how Moonlight Sonata was spliced and put together. It actually took a while for me to get used to it than the Ed Sheeran. As another friend who also plays classical piano but doesn't watch figure skating said 'They butchered 'Moonlight Sonata!'. I had to explain to him why it was necessary. :-)

a new video for their SD at IDF : a fan cam : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=el4Cn6r9v6E

That gives a great new angle on the SD, but wow, you can really see how badly Gabriella's bootlace came loose too! She was lucky it didn't end up being a trip hazard.

Re. the tear in her dress, there may not have been time to send it away for professional mending between CoC and IDF. Mending fine fabric like that is tricky at the best of times; doing it in a way that wouldn't disrupt the flow and fall of the costume during performance would be even more so. Ideally, they'd have a backup version of each costume available, but the things are so expensive that I doubt it's possible.

From a news article on Icenerwork:

Papadakis and Cizeron floated over the ice, immediately taking their audience on a heavenly journey only they knew about, one made of all the emotions human beings can have: beauty, hope, dreams -- and, yet, also finitude. Their opening twizzles were not only synchronized but bore a meaning, the specific and original tempo of each one signifying a part of the journey. Their trademark curve lift, as Cizeron takes a grand plié spread eagle position to carry his partner, was magical. Their combination spin took them from pure smoothness to fierce temper and energy, as if they were struggling together, along with their audience. At the end of their routine, the judges awarded them a Level 4 for their three lifts, spin and twizzles, as well as for their circular step sequence. Their midline step sequence was rated a Level 3.
Beethoven's music is so powerful, and Papadakis and Cizeron made it visible, almost palpable, in the heart of everyone in attendance. They amassed 120.58 points for the free -- 1.25 more than their previous record, making them the first dancers to crack the 120-point barrier in the free dance -- and increased the overall world record to 201.98 points.
Several skaters received a 10 from a couple of judges for their component scores. Eight out of nine judges awarded a 10 to Papadakis and Cizeron -- for interpretation. For what probably was also the first time in the history of the international judging system, the figure displayed as an average was a perfect 10.
Papadakis danced in night blue, Cizeron in moon white. Their costumes were also part of their creative process, they explained.
"We wanted something very sober, that would not hide our bodies too much and would emphasize our lines and the fluidity of our movements and choreography," Cizeron said. "We felt really good. It feels like home here.

Gabriella is so adorable and her humour is absolutely spot-on. She totally captured that musical moment and put the perfect movement to it! So free, so simply herself, so utterly endearing.
The way she laughs in the K&C when they get the score, it's like a little child: totally in the moment, laughing with what IS now, no other thoughts spoiling that moment of pure happiness. I think I'm falling in love with her...

What's also funny is that the "1" with the little dot on the circle around the "1" (whatever that circle may want to be) makes it look as if she just opened an information desk...

I've heard many times those costumes were expensive but what type of range are we talking about do you know ? I'm curious.

A second hand non made to measure latin dress (ballroom dance) costs 300€ on their costumes maker's website. So I think you can at least double that price. And all the work done on the SD gaby's dress with the jewelries it's moooooore expensive

It's okay, the fed will pay for everything concerning those 2  The advantage of not having a million top skaters in one country. Plus they have a lot more sponsors now, so they clearly don't have to worry anymore.

Yes, from what I can work out Gabriella's SD costume would cost anywhere between $1,500 and $3,000 here in Australia, depending on where they went to get it made, because it's custom-made and a lot of the detailing would need to be done by hand. Her FD dress would probably be less than that because there are no added decorations, but it's still a custom piece that has to be fitted perfectly so that it will stay up with the back cut out, and the skirt's made of delicate fabric that's difficult to sew, so it would still be at around the $1,000-$2,000 mark. And then they have to have Guillaume's costumes made too - again, all custom-made with perhaps the exception of the SD tank-tops, and the draping/pleating on his FD top is its own kind of fancy sewing. That's another couple of thousand dollars minimum.

Of course, our exchange rate is terrible, so the prices would probably be lower elsewhere. :)

Feedback tiiiiime !!

So I was at Grenoble on Saturday for the FD and Ladies FP. It was my first GP event as a grown-up and to be honest I was totally excited to see G&G skate (but also some other skaters ^^).
Maya did a great feedback and I fully confirm her words !
They were so soft during the FD, I knew it would be a great score !! The atmosphere was completely crazy, everyone started to applause before the last spin.
I saw Romain and start to babbling and blushing as I said him "Hello" (too shy to talk to well-known people I think ^^")

I post some pics of the warm-up on IG. Here is the links
