GPF men will be hilarious... I predict Kolyada to win it. Just because it will be funny.

Were you being intentionally rude in calling it “hilarious?”

Just because Javi, Patrick, and Yuzuru won’t be there doesn’t mean the competition is a joke. The athletes who did make it worked hard to get there and take it quite seriously, I’m sure. Boyang competed at Skate America with two sprained ankles in order to qualify.

I think part of the ridiculousness of the competition will be the aftermath...mainly because those skaters super fans (or fans in general) will be quick to comment "if _____ were here, ____ would not have finished that high."
Clearly this year's mens GPF event will have a huge asterisk for many skating fans because of those notable absences...
Someone should make big plushy toys in shape of asterisks to throw at the rink during the men's GPF, because THAT would be HILARIOUS!

Those top men weren't exactly convincing at last year's GPF. It was a hot mess. The elitist attitude toward the men's field apart from the "anointed ones" is incredibly irritating.

I think if you are a true skating fan, this event has no asterisks at all.

Skaters bring what they bring to the ice. If a higher ranked skater was unable to capitalize on their strengths, well, that’s why it’s a sport and that’s why they have competitions. If skaters were injured, or unable to compete at their best, that is highly unfortunate and also a part of sport.

I would not at all it find it “HILARIOUS” if asterisk plushies were thrown. I would feel sorry for any audience member who understood so very little about the sport that they would do that.:scratch2::ohwell::confused:

Best of luck to all the skaters who qualified for the GPF.

but you shouldn't have to.

He was at Onyx, and even if it's not an ISU recognized event, his skating there (as seen on videos) says enough to rank him first among Canadians...

He scored 174.16 in the LP (including some zayaks because he marked the 4s
and he had a 2 quad landed short (fall on the 3a) worthy of 96.55

96.55 + 174.16 = 270.71
You could definitely put him there, between Adam and Sergei.. with a big * sign if you wish but there is no need to remove him as clearly, unless he has something else in mind, he is planning to compete and he can only go up.

Please tell me the Canadian Olympic selection criteria.

Thank you

If Chan exerts its usual abilities it will be fine.

IMHO it becomes almost the main factor as besides Chan, the other criteria are very rarely met by the other men.... Reynolds did place 9th in worlds 2017. Junior worlds 2016, Nadeau placed 2nd. That's pretty much the only achievements by Canadian men other than Patrick who placed in top 5 at both worlds, qualified for GPF both years and won an ISU championship 4cc 2016.

Unfortunately for Kevin though, he has had a disastrous start of the season and despite being perhaps the top contender with his worlds results, I don't think he can rest on his laurels.

Personally, I hope that Patrick goes with the other best man at Nationals. It is too tight IMHO to make arbitrary calls.

Regarding Joseph, that score is for a no quad junior short program with one less jumping pass (again a quad) in the LP. Joseph skated clean a couple weeks ago at sectionals in the senior division in Boucherville. Let's see if he keeps on his momentum in Challenge this weekend.

When I look at the quality of jumps and presentation, Joseph is right now #2 ... though, it's a bit risky to send a 16 y o to the games.

It will be difficult to be a representative of the Olympic Games at any time.
Even in Japan's selection criteria, if shoma misses GPF and National and yuzuru misses National, either shoma or yuzuru will not be elected Olympic.

1 National winner
2 Nationals second, third and GPF competitors
3 Comparison of other competitors
There is a possibility that shoma and yuzuru will compete for 3.

Influenza, injuries, etc. I do not know what will happen.

They might communicate this as selection criteria, but the japanese Men are a different case than the Ladies, who are all at a similar level. The men have three spots. Why do they have three spots? Because they have the current World Champion and the current Vice World Champion. If Yuzuru and Shoma are healthy, come the Olympics, it would be the most ridiculous decision to not send them. Because there aren't any better men, or even just near their level, waiting in the ranks! Even if Shoma is last at GPF and Yuzuru doesn't appear at Nationals, it makes no difference. Tanaka and Mura weren't convincing this season and one of them will go to the Olympics regardless. Who, honestly should go, other than them? Tomono? Sato? Only to end up at dead last at the Olympics? Back in 2013 this decision really WAS hard and heartbreaking. This year, it's not.

Representatives will be elected according to the prescribed wording.
Even in the past, in the 2004-2005 season when shizuka arakawa was a 2004 World Gold gold medalist from the Federation, "It will not be chosen unless you participate in the National." She was injured and only participated in the national SP, FP abstained.

2013 Pre Olympic GPF gold medalist DAISUKE TAKAHASHI was injured in the right knee, but because the national participation was the condition of selection, he went to the National despite the injury.

Representatives will be selected according to the prescribed wording this time as well.
Whether Shoma is not hurt or diseased and will participate in the GPF, there is a lot to do with yuzuru 's Olympic appearance.

Huh? Shoma being healthy and going to the GPF has a lot to do with Yuzu participating in the Olympics or not? Sorry, but no, it does not :confused2:
