Gumennik also had his laces tear during the landing of 4F in SP. Unlucky.
But, they tore at the toe of the boot, not up top. Lucky.
He managed to add that 2T to 4F despite the break, and finish the program without referee's call and a broken lace dangling around. Lucky.

All and all, Gumennik showed remarkable resilience and good cheer. I have an immense respect for him and his sixth place overall.
I thought he was solid. If he gets to skate at world's which is what soeone said earlier he could shake things up but I thought Russia was just allowed in certain circumsances to compete at the Olympics?

OK, finally done. Just want to give props to Li Yu-Hsiang again. The way he skated is actually similar to Ami, in the sense that he was clearly unburdened by the expectation of competition or winning, and just went out and enjoyed himself. That was wonderful to watch.

They didn't mean Gumennik would skate at worlds. He won't. ISU said very specifically that there will be no changes to AIN status this season when IOC asked for inclusion of juniors right before Olympics.

Just curious. What are ways in which Ilia could conceivably maximize his jumping content even more than he has now?

What Johnny did not predict was that Mikhail proved to be the man to watch this Olympics, lol.
Mikhail has bad technique and prerotates his jumps excessively. Yuzuru Hanyu, Nathan Chen, Ilia Malinin, Boyang Jin and Mikhail Kolyada have textbook technique. :)

Kolyada fell nearly 100% of the time he went for a 4Lz just to scalp the base value. Worry about that. At least it's an observable fact along with the score sheets that show the deduction for the fall. As for your problem with Shaidorov winning: Stay salty. More and more people are joining this forum with the sole purpose of discrediting a winning skater or a country. Do better. By the way, Ilia once said he liked many of Mikhail's jumps better than his own. I find it hard to believe he'd like "excessively prerotated" jumps better than his own or worse, someone online claiming something isn't true of a personal friend of his.

Nathan and Ilia definitely didn't have textbook technique. Nathan's axel was always flawed and his jumps could always use more height and flow better and have better landings in general, and Ilia's toe loop isn't ideal even if better than all top skaters right now.

Kolyada, Hanyu, and Jin do have proper jumps, but they had/have their own qualities that could be better - Kolyada lipped and his jumps never had as much distance as the other two, Hanyu's body positions could be very off, and Jin really could hold his landings and flow more (ETA: he's also reduced speed into jumps, but forgivable seeing how he's skating pretty much broken nowadays). None of the three jumped all their jumps consistently with great height/distance and flow - which is very much a problem with how much the CoP distracts you from giving the best possible quality of the elements you're attempting.

I scored along with the protocols.

For me, Shaidorov the clear winner overall (with an even bigger gap between him and Kagiyama). Kagiyama 2nd, but not that far ahead of Cha, who I absolutely give the Bronze to over Sato. Gogolev 5th, Siao 6th (and not 7th as he actually was), Gummenik 7th, Malinin 8th, Grassl 9th (but very close to Malinin), and I have Torgashev 10th overall (not the 12th he wound up being). I have him a hair above Aymoz and Egadze (11th, 12th).

Was fun to do.

Aymoz did a great job in the SP. When asked if Malinin pushed him creatively he said:

“No, but it’s not a big no. Like I said, every skater has something different to bring to the table. Ilia pushed figure skating in general. It didn’t push me especially, but it pushed me in so many different ways. This year, I saw him do the quad Axel in the short program at the final. When I saw it, I was like, such a courageous person, so great, so talented. He had the balls to try it, and I was like, damn, so good. He pushed me because the next day in the competition, I tried two quads in my short program. So I think he’s pushing everyone to do something. But a lot of skaters push me. For example, Yuma—did you just see him skate? Oh my God, it’s just so beautiful. He did the most beautiful quad Sal. This is also very pushing and inspiring. Or for example, Nika at the Europeans three weeks ago, he was so clean. It was so good. Every skater has something to bring. And every skater has something beautiful.”

I love his costume!
