By the way, I just realized that he's been skating See You Again in the gala during all his none too great competitions this season! Huh.
 
You know me, I worry a lot. But the last thing I worry about is Shoma popping jumps in his exhibitions. :p
 
Context: In my country, we wear black during funerals. Plus, "See you again" is about missing a friend who's gone. "I'll see you again, my jumps." [emoji16] just kidding! Nah, im not worried about the pops in Ex, i just really want to see a different exhibition program.

Glad he learned something and knows what to work on. :-)

Back again now and very happy that the Winter Prince was on the podium. Gold would have been better, but silver is a real honor too. I still say there were a lot of positives to take away from this, especially in terms of Winter. I thought his expression was wonderful, he moved great, Step Sequence and Spins were all Level 4. This may be the first time for a Level 4 on the Step Sequence? Since I am not a fan of five quad programs, I wasn’t as enamored of the free. I think once you get beyond 4 quads you run the risk of losing the integrity of any program. That being said, apart from the jumps, it is a lovely program, and I think he really feels this music. I would be beyond happy if the rules would change and quads would be limited to 3 in the free. I know, fat chance! And you can put whatever program content layout you want on a piece of paper, you still have to deliver it. Ryan Bradley on the Oly Channel talked about his beautiful edges and command of the ice (and of course mentioned his errors too).…His condition seemed better but still not 100%. Any length of time off the ice is not a good thing for them!

I also found myself thinking, “Wait, what happened to the big Nagoya / Toyota conspiracy that supposedly had everything totally rigged for Sho to win?” ! Sure! Just as I suspected – a bunch of hog wash started by the usuals. Maybe the judges didn’t get the memo about the fix! A few insignificant changes would have given him the gold, had they wanted him to have it.

Not sure if he should go to 4CC or not (Jan. 23-28), with JPN Nats Dec. 20-24. And somewhere in there he is supposed to be squeezing in jump training with Alex. Haven’t heard any specific news about the jump training yet. I hope he is in good enough condition to be training lots and lots of quads! That could be tricky too if Alex is taking skaters to Novice or Jr. U.S. Nationals, because our Nats start really early this year (at the end of Dec.) because of the Olympics. So who’s to say what the best use of his time is, given his condition. I’m sure he and Her Royal Fluffiness and Yamada will have a pow wow with his team to figure out the best plan.

Thank you for all the fun things that were posted in this thread. Once life gets back to normal, I have to go back and read everything and enjoy it again!

Arriba, glad to see you back! I hope the personal turmoil is mostly gone (bothersome stuff, that). So happy to read your thoughts. Although we all really wanted a win, everything has a silver lining. Oh, the pun was unintended! [emoji23]
 
This blog post below, I really didn’t know what she was talking about. I may disagree with opinions or preferences of this blogger, but I have respect for her sense of proportion on skating fandom excesses. I believe she’d mentioned on her twitter that she didn’t want this to get any bigger. And as I encounter myths exploding into accepted assumptions in other subjects and people, I thought i’d post this here. It’s not exactly for present (visible) company. (there are more readers here than the number of posters would suggest!)
To add: In the interview some time ago about his not being loved so much, I always took it to be a response to a leading question about how popular he seemed to be, and he was simply deflecting that question. Him "not liking himself" also falls into this category from my perspective aggravated by translation.
I agree that these misunderstandings get out of hand. It seems to me, there isn’t a single person who is becoming famous, that doesn’t think first and foremost about how to answer a question as uncontroversially, ie boringly, as possible to silly questions newsworthy for its awkwardness. (which skater he thinks has a beautiful face)

Perhaps it's because I'm familiar with japanese culture, but I knew exactly that Shoma's answer is not coming down to self-esteem. It's actually also really rooted in the language. For example, there is a grammar for giving and receiving gifts, which makes it seem like the speaker is putting himself down. There is a lot of "I'm not worthy of this" going on there, which directly translated seems weird, but it's just the way that people speak.
 
What an eventful couple of days. It took some time to read all of your comments! All I can say is my thoughts exactly. Very conflicting thoughts about this competition. I love Winter and to see how much he's enjoying himself out there! Sometimes I do think if he's going to be one of those athletes that never fill their potential because I've certainly seen that happening with other faves. But honestly I don't think so. There's something different about this guy and the way he thinks that makes me believe in him. Even with all the talk about not wanting to lose he is "fighting" himself and is concentrating on his journey. And sometimes that journey includes some low points before it goes up again. And whether he ever wins gold at GPF, Olympics etc. is going to happen or not happen. There are so many other factors going on besides one skater's performance.

But anyway, CONGRATULATIONS on the silver!! :clap: :cheer2:

Regarding the levels, he got level 4 for the step sequence in France for the first time.

Overall, there were a lot of positives to take away from this. First and foremost, his condition is SO much better than when he was in France. His speed seemed a little better in the step sequence. He really seems to have upped the intensity in general. He was well received by the home crowd. He didn't seem to be plagued by the "I HAVE to deliver in front of the home crowd" mentality. He was probably unhappy / embarrassed about the 3A but didn't let it interrupt the flow of the program. Many other things too numerous to name!

A very good effort in spite of some flaws. We'll see how he does in the FS. He's a pretty good long program skater, so I have high hopes! On the Oly Channel, Ryan Bradley was saying if he had made the 3A, he would have been untouchable in the short. Acccchhhh! shoulda, coulda, woulda! :luv17:

I thought Shoma had changed the blade back to the center, but it seems it's still on the left. Mmh...whatever works for him, I guess.
 
Hi everyone I am sad this morning I just heard that my cousin in Italy has passed away. I have not seen her for a couple of
years. We were childhood buddies. I hate cancer.

Thanks for all of the updates! Shoma and the FF has a way of cheering me up.

My condolences demarinis5, I lost a family member this year as well. Seeing shoma skate at breaks helped at that time...
