I think this is the old rule. Such combinations are now 3 jump combos: a jump, a single loop, and another jump. Each jump gets full BV if completed.

It’s still a rule. If it’s not on the landing foot, it’s officially sequence and only 80%.

The 1L combinations are counted as combinations because there is never an on-ice change from landing edge to takeoff edge. Say a counterclockwise jumper does a 3F-1L-3S. She lands the flip on her back right outside edge and immediately takes off that edge for the half-loop. She lands the half-loop on her back left inside edge and immediately takes off that edge for the Salchow. Her landing edge is always also her takeoff edge. (This is also why people speculate about the possibility of an ambidextrous jumper doing a Lutz as the second jump in a combo; the back right outside landing edge of the first, counterclockwise jump would become the takeoff edge of the second, clockwise Lutz, which would be landed on a back left outside edge.)

But if she does a 3S-2A, she lands the Salchow on her back right outside edge and has to change feet and edges to the forward left outside edge for the Axel takeoff. That's what makes it a sequence rather than a combination, and drops the base value to 80% of the individual jumps' cumulative value.

ETA: Oops, I see that in a thread in the Lutz Corner, the ever-expert gkelly has recently posted more precise information: a sequence is worth "80% of the sum of the two highest-value jumps in the sequence." I apologize for not knowing how to link to/quote posts in other threads!

For the record, Ashley has never said that she was retiring at the end of this year. If anything, I recall her stating very clearly that she wasn't going to put that added pressure on top of an already stressful Olympic season.

They are the Junior winners of Eastern and Midwestern Sectionals. I think the assumption is one of those ladies will won Juniors.

The issue is USFS usually sends an under 18 Senior to Junior Worlds over the Junior winner.

Seriously......I try not to ask dumb questions and I asked because I didn't know. Usually GS posters have knowledge which is why I ask here before heading to google. Nope, she's still 14.
This season is her first as a junior and she did it in Egna, Italy.

I disagree. I don't see why a skater should "deserve" the honor of going to the Olympics just because they have a fluke great skate at nationals. The only skater who has shown breakthrough consistency this year is Bradie. Apart from her, as long as they don't completely bomb, the spots should go to the U.S. ladies who have done the most for the sport over the past quad and have the most potential. Those, of course, are Ashley, Karen, and Mirai.

And what exactly have those 3 done internationally that make it worth ignoring a less than stellar performance at Nationals that they were able to be beaten by a fluke great skate when they will have the politicking points over the other competitors outside of Bradie in their pocket?

The "most successful" of the 3 is Ashley who won 2 GP golds, against competitors who at the time were not at their best, 1 GP bronze in a competition where she should have at least been third and a Worlds silver in her home country...and I doubt that anyone honestly look at 2016 Ashley and say she has improved between then and now

Karen's highest placements was 2 bronze medals at Senior B competitions, then there were 2 4th place and 5th place finishes and everything else was out of the top 5

Mirai Nagasu (and I say this while she's my current favorite US lady): she's fared a little better than Chen with 2 golds and 1 bronze at Senior B's, then 1 silver and 1 bronze at 4CC's - which for the sake of full disclosure 4CCs competitive field is not crazy high, then there are a couple 5th place and 1 9th and 1 10th place finishes.

Just saw both Bradie and Polina posting jumping videos. Polina is working hard to earn a spot. That girl is scrappy. I say never count her out.

Polina posted 2a-3t and 3lo which is great, sure, but I’m still waiting to see 3lz-3t or 3f-3t. Then maybe I’ll consider her a contender.

Please help me understand the fascination with Tessa Hong.

She won Juv in 2012 and two years later, it appears she won Intermediate (but I think she actually got 2nd). Then she had a series of injuries but somehow she stayed in the mix (why ???) until last year when she had great short which earned her a spot in the final flight at Nationals. But her long did not go well to put it mildly.

She has had several JGP slot but again those do not look like they have gone as well has the hype would make you think they did.

She is a very pretty skater, and her coach is Frank Carroll. What am I missing?

I am the opposite.

If I want an answer to a question, I am much happier when I can be self-sufficient. So I go to Google first.

If I am not successful in finding what I want via Googling, only then would I ask here on GS.​

With the exception of Tallinn Trophy LP, Angela Wang has been bringing it this season. She's been working her butt off and it's showing for her. She's still younger (21) but I feel like this is the year she's going to be showing up at Nationals ready to go.

Even with the LP issues at TT which was on par with anything most of the other US ladies have shown us lately, since no one has really been perfect.

Angela has the speed, the refinement, the smooth deep edges, she has actual height on her jumps, and nice spins.
