Gabriella Papadakis & Guillaume Cizeron

just a little interruption from this discussion ;)

Gaby & Guillaume + Ed Sheeran = PERFECT a new montage ....

Oh, wow! Thanks for sharing. It is wonderful to see their body of work. You can tell they had so much promise even as novices. There is another YouTube video using the same song superimposed on their 2016 SD and it has almost 2 million views now (with 784 comments and 47,000 'likes' so far, practically a 100% positive comments!)! I believe cocotaffy posted this in another forum a couple of weeks ago. Here is the link:

I suggest reading the comments coming from viewers who are mostly not followers of figure skating and who therefore watched the video with 'pure eyes'. Here are some of them that I lifted verbatim:

Sorry for being annoying, but what are they saying in this video with Ms. Pinard? Just in a couple of words. Many thanks in advance! :)
A rough and very literal translation, but no time for more and anyway it's a bit difficult to really turn into English for me. Feel free to correct!
ETA: together with Cocotaffy's real English rendering (two posts down), it will probably make more sense!

Cathérine Pinard: Each emotive state (of being) is a muscular state (of being).

Voice Over: The Montreal based Cathérine Pinard was artistic coach at the Cirque du Soleil. She worked thus with artists from over the whole world. Interested by this special crew, the world of skating has called in her services, as her approach is unique in the world.

CP: I start with working with the beings that I have in front of me. I ask what they want, I work on the connection with oneself, with the other, with the music, with the program, with the choreography, with the audience. We do a lot of writing exercises, we do a lot of improvisations, we try to not put a meaning onto things but to let the meaning emerge from the things, a bit like the work of actors, because I am trained as an actress, so I go get stuff there also.

(CP: Tadidapadidam -- and that's where the phrase ends)

VO: Four years ago, the French couple Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron were 13th in the world. They decide to go in exile in Québec to join the school of the Canadian champions Marie-France Dubreuil and Patrice Lauzon. It's there that they will meet a one-of-a-kind teacher.

Guillaume Cizeron: It makes us evolve as interpreters, as artists, as skaters, so that does for us...- it really is a work that is important in the sport, and also personally because it develops, it develops a kind of, another contact, we work a lot on the relationship we have also on the ice, between us, and it's true that this is personally also important for us.

(CP: one-two-three-four - more clearly defined, Gabriella)

VO: Only one year was enough for the French to become World Champions. A consecration that they owe, in part, to their teacher.

Gabriealla Papadakis: Totally, in fact. I have absolutely not the impression that we skate now like we did before, it has really brought a personal dimension and much more artistic compared to what we did.

(CP: Perfect. Excellent.)

CP: It's a bit like a musician. Classical musicians try to reach the piece, and they have never the feeling that they arrived at it, and they love that. And so, from competition to competition, (in the morning??) it's "what can we do, where can we go?", for me, there are still huge depths to be discovered. And we are never bored, it's like a quest, a quest for the beauty, the truth, the sacred centre of each program.

(CP: one-two-three-four - it's the thought that supports everything)

GP: The work we do with Cathérine clearly is part of our strengths, even -

VO: Is she your secret weapon?

GP: (laughing) Our secret weapon? Secret, no, I don't think so, I think everyone can see that we have something extra due to what Cathérine gives us, compared to the other couples who don't do this work, and we are really proud of that because we, we like doing this and we want to skate like that, and yes, we want to make this our strength.

(CP: one-two-three-four - being sculpted by the beat, that's it)

CP: It's really that which touches-- There you have it, that is what touches me most. To share beauty, to share art, and also a truth. It's very healthy when one connects, when an athlete manages to make the connection inside, they tell me "ah, it's thàt, it's as simple as that!", but to get to that point one must take away so much that is not needed...

VO: At the coming Olympics in Pyeong Chang next February, we can foresee a duel on the Korean ice, between the Canadian couple Virtue and Moir, current World Champions, and the French Cizeron/Papadakis, looking for revenge.
One thing is for sure: there will be a bit of Quebecois know-how reflecting on the podium.

Sorry for being annoying, but what are they saying in this video with Ms. Pinard? Just in a couple of words. Many thanks in advance! :)
She explains her process. She's from Quebec and was working with Cirque du Soleil and with many different artists. Then because of her unique approach, the skating world took notice and she started to work with Gaby and Guillaume. She adapts her approach according the individual in front of her. She helps them works on their connection between them, with the music, the program, the audience ... She has them do a lot of written and improvisations exercises to try not to impose a meaning but rather let it emerge from them a bit like an actor. She was herself trained as an actress. Guillaume says they work a lot on interpretation and on themselves really. It helps them for their sport but also personally especially to strengthen their relationship on the ice. Gaby explains they owe their success to this approach. She feels they skate very differently since they started with Catherine. It helpt develop a very personal and artistic dimension to their skating. Catherine then compares P/C's work to a classical musician who will keep on deepening their interpretation like a never ending quest for each program's beauty and truth. It's a very satisfying process which never gets boring. Gaby says it's what enables them to be different from other skater's who are not using this type of approach and she's proud of it. In the end, Catherine gets emotional because she loves sharing beauty and truth with them. She also says when an athlete understands how to connect with his inner self then he realizes this quest his not that hard but first he has to strip all unnecessary layers ( I guess she means all those mental barriers preventing reaching the beauty and truth she kept talking about)

It doesn't sound so clear but I hope it helps you to get the overall picture.

ETA Gotlev just did a much better job than me so disregard my translation. But I didn't have the courage to erase it, it took me a little while

Guilty as charged. The popularity of that video is astounding, by Ed Sheeran is quite popular (outside figure skating that is), and reading all those comments from non ID fans goes to show how P/C's performances are able to transcend the skating community.

I can't understand how you guys do it. I can't even find something decent on YT. DailyMotion doesn't open here, and I'm desperately trying to find a good video of the exhibition in Japan. The only thing I can dig up is that version where the Russian commentator thinks he's endlessly more interesting than Gaby and Guillaume. He's freaking me out and I want to see it without anybody blabbering through it. Anybody has any treasure map?

ETA: I found Epic Skating's upload with Tatiana Tarasova (if I recognize her voice correctly) which is already endlessly better than the other version but still blabs a bit over the beginning. Yay me...?

ETAEM: But that video has low quality...

ETAASM: This is probably a failed attempt to get the DM video in YT: sound goes all idiotic when the music should start... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RnDorluN_NM

tatiana tarasova is commenting a little here ..

today and tomorrow pm, according to Guillaume IG stories, they are doing a lot of print press or tv show... and they met teddy riner the great great judoka olympic , world
champion ..

So in the next few days during or after french nationnal, we should get some new interview !!!

You are not annoying, I ask the same when people can translate from russian or other language other than french or english ... and most of the time
translation (and not school translation like I am only able to do) are really great from cocotaffy and maya and now gotlev (they are the great one to ask for ... !!)

Try this link there's no commentary http://fsnews.ru/forums-m-posts-id-23659.html

Oh, so many posts!
First of all, thank you for the video. It's just beautiful. I wish I could speak french, but it's such a tough language to learn. Maybe then I'd be able to recognise what a Quebeck accent sounds like.
I've started visiting this forum since the end of last year, I guess. It's grown so much since then, it makes me so happy as it's impossible for me to talk about figure skating with anyone, no one I know likes this sport. Thank you all who posts here. :)
Back to G&G, though. I don't think I want to comment on the hysteria caused by some of the V/M fans. It's sad. And scary, too. And it says a lot about them. The things I hate the most are probably comments such as "No wonder they so good at this MS FD as they've been performing it for 4 years in a row." Or that P/C are good skaters, but they're no match for V/M as they do easier things and it isn't fair. :palmf: I only hope neither Gabriella nor Guillaume pay attention to such comments. I hope they know there're also others who have a completely different opinion and admire their work so much.
These two definitely have a busy schedule, but it may be a Christmas gift for us - it means more interviews and/or new facts for us. :)

There are many more videos/interviews coming ! We get to have that once or twice a year and they do everything at the same time, it's going to be hard to keep up !
According to Guillaume's instagram, for tomorrow :

-TV appearance at 2:15 pm (not very long but I don't know if it's live)
-They'll give interview for several newspaper and we can expect another video the following days (or it'll be out later depending on the subject)
-Eurosport facebook live and a interview at 4 pm (Paris time)
-1 radio show
-Finally, another tv appearance

I'll try to link as much as I can, but if you find anything feel free to do it  Today they had several TV appearances too, they have a radio show scheduled, so as soon as I find them, I'll post it !

Maya posted a couple of extract from a long tv show, I'm waiting for the replay to be uploaded ! Thank you Maya

Many thanks for this great video!

Catherine Pinard is definitely a very special coach in Gadbois. Apart from Gabriella and Guillaume, I am not sure who's being trained by her among the other ice dance couples. I don’t think she works with Tessa and Scott otherwise their interpretation and their connection on the ice would be very different. Just my personal impression but I really feel like Gabriella and Guillaume are the ice dancers the most in sync with Catherine Pinard. They understood the most how to find in themselves and share with each other the strength of their souls and their fragility as human beings to translate these strengths and fragilities on the ice and invite the audience feels his own emotions and feelings.

If we were to retain one thing from this interview, it would be for sure this sentence:
“We try to not put a sense onto things but to let the sense emerge from the things”
If one would like to describe in a few words how Gabriella and Guillaume managed to mesmerize the public since the 2014/2015 season, then this sentence says everything. No need to add anything else.

I’m sure you read at least once a comment stating P/C danced on similar music themes since a few years. So what do Mozart Concerto24, “Rain into my black eyes”, Stillness Oddudua and Moonlight Sonata have in common? Easy answer: Nothing! But one can clearly feel there’s something so typical to P/C in all these programs. Letting the sense emerge from the things is the common frame of their various FDs, independently from their different music choices (indeed big challenge!). Translating this on to the ice requires outstanding skating skills for a maximum of softness and emotions.

Sorry Camille 1409 but we can't open it here in the US. We just get to see the Carrefour ad :slink:
Thank you though!

I don't know how to put up this kind of videos on YouTube I'm sorry ! (If anyone knows, I'm up for it, it's a nice interview, the 2 ladies, especially the 2nd one, exactly know what they are talking about).
