2017-18 State of U.S. Ladies Skating

I put Courtney ahead of Angela because Courtney had a GP bronze last season & a GP 4th this season. Also a bronze this year at Warsaw. IMO, puts her ahead of Angela. fwiw, Courtney also had one of the year's highest-scoring combos (3f-3l), but one element doesn't really figure into the selection process.

Courtney was fourth at SC with 182. Not exactly a big score. At any other GP she would have been closer to 7th/8th or lower. At Warsaw she scored 106. Which is about the same score that put her in 12th place at last years nationals. I would bunch her in the group w Angela + others. (also if we are counting last years results, Mariah has a GP silver and was on the world team so she should not be on the same level as Courtney).

The last time I went to Nationals was 2016 when Polina won the SP and we had the thrilling skate-off in the FS between Gracie and Polina. I personally will sorely miss Gracie this year and send her all good wishes for her recovery and a better future.

US Nationals are such a wildcard. I think even Mariah has an equal chance as much as anyone else at winning the gold. I mean...if she gets her act together and goes clean in the SP and FS then why not. It’s as exciting as it is frightening for fans.

Exciting? I'll grant you that. I like a bit of unpredictability.

Frightening? Naw. Let 'em skate, and chips fall where they may.

Other than Bradie's SkAm performance, I think 182 is right where nearly every notable US lady stands in terms of season's highs, give or take a triple loop.

Mrs P is the one with the data, and her analysis of the numbers says we can expect a wild ride.

182, 194, honestly doesn’t matter when the top contenders are all scoring 210+ solidly.

Unless there is major improvement by one or more of the US women I see nothing but slaughter up ahead.

Funky things can and have happened at Nationals before so a wild result such as M Bell winning wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility...at all. Gonna be the apex of this season for me, really...

I think Mariah has a better chance of medaling than either Angela or Courtney....regardless of what they have done lately. Mariah has it all - just needs to put it together. I even think a clean Mariah could beat Mirai in the LP.

Nationals is going to be a fierce competition in mens, ladies and dance. Pairs - it's going to be whoever screws up the least.

NO ONE (except, of course, Kaetlyn Osmond) got a big score at Skate Canada because the tech team took everyone else out of contention.

Not sure we can blame the tech panel when Courtney’s personal BEST is 183. The truth is her score at SC wasn’t great and it’s not a bad score for her. Even in terms of US ladies. Bradie, Mirai, Mariah, and Ashley(by a small margin of course) scored higher this year......And her score at Warsaw was very very low. 106 was for fs. Not sure what her sp was but even so.

Thanks for the answer.

Isn't it great we're all debating 2018 instead of 2014 now. :)

I think the team will be Ashley Wagner, Mirai Nagasu, and Bradie Tennell. Maybe Karen instead of Bradie if Karen pulls herself together by Nationals.

IMO, the ladies' event is going to be the most hotly contested. I think the men's (Chen, Rippon, Brown) and the dance (Shibs, Chock/Bates, Hubbell/Donohue) are more or less set.

I'm in agreement with this. I might have Polina ahead of the others on her line, merely because she has produced some good skates at this event in the past. However, she did look well off her peak form in her events this season.

Agreed. Polina's PB is 207, but it's pre-injury. Her PB is better than everyone's except Karen Chen's and Ashley Wagner's. Her post-injury PB is 50 points below that.

So, it's really a question of which Polina we're going to get. For the sake of her and her home-crowd fans, I hope she gets back to the 180s, which puts her in the U.S. mix.

Hey, ik his seems random, but what happened to Tyler Pierce? I really liked her when I first saw her in 2015, and after 2016, I thought she could have been in contention for one of these spots... by now she’s not even at nationals...

That's a good question...I feel like she and Vivian Le have dropped off the map. You know who else I wonder about is Emily Chan. I remember her as a very promising skater who's biggest problem was that she didn't have a good Lutz. Did she retire?

If we were counting only last year, then of course Mariah would be at a higher level than Courtney. But the ranking in my post was based on last year PLUS the first half of this year. And imo Mariah isn't ahead of Courtney when more recent results are considered.

As noted several times elsewhere, the SC scores for all ladies (except Osmond) were quite low compared to other GPs. It's notable that Courtney was 12 points higher than Karen there and only 1.4 off the podium.

Really, that could be said for most of the USA ladies.
This is true, but when Mariah is "on" she does have it all - technical, presentation, personality, grace. I don't feel that Angela and Courtney are that well-rounded. And frankly, while this is most likely NOT a popular opinion, I gave up on Mirai several years ago. She has moments of brilliance where you can see the skater she was some years back and then it just goes... I sincerely hope I'm wrong because I know Mirai works really hard...but....history doesn't lie. She's good for 1 or 2 good skates a year and generally they're not at Nationals.

Actually, Karen's PB is 199, so Ashley is the only US lady with a PB higher than Polina's. But otherwise, I agree.

Wait actually, I just checked and Polina's official ISU PB is 187. Are you using domestic numbers/senior B numbers?
