Yuzuru Hanyu: 2017-2018

I wish it was new footage. But it’s nice to see him again.
Edit:
I mean ‘recent’ footage.

I could watch it by accident on TV, Shizuka was in the studio and she explained how Yuzuru survived and was strong after the accident of CoC and surgery in 2014, and after 5th place of SP in the Worlds 2017. I liked that two male announcers were positive and supportive for Yuzuru :)

It's now just one month til the Olympic figure skating begins, and the Men's Team SP...!

I am already getting excited, and nervous :-D

I have many, many favourite skaters, that I will be cheering for. But of course, the triumphant return of Yuzuru, fully recovered and ready to slay, is what I am looking forward to the most...!

Everything happens in the middle of the night where I am. But I have booked a day off work, after each Singles event, so I can stay up all night to watch "live", and not have to go to work in the morning :-D (Sorry Dance and Pairs teams, but I can't spare that many days off! ^_^; )

I have a question How likely do you think it is that Hanyu will win the Olympics or even be considered a favorite for gold now. I mean with his injury and being off the ice for months it's not looking good I'm not expecting him to podium to be truthfully honest. And I'm saying this as his biggest fan.

Nobody has been him so nobody knows. I know he is probably doing everything he can to be in shape to defend. But whatever is in the cards is whatever will play out. I very much hope he can pull out the win.

I know how you feel. Right now if I had to put money on it, I'd probably go with Shoma or Nathan just because his current shape is a mystery. There hasn't been much news on his recovery, which can also be seen as good news. Can't help but have a similar feeling as you that making the podium may be difficult. The rest of the field has continued to progress technically and PCS right now is kinda..... I would love for Hanyu to come back strong and take his 2nd Olympic gold though. However, I do feel Hanyu skates well in the chasing position and going into the Olympics under the radar and not the favorite may be good for him. Would be interested in what the bookies (is that what you call them) have the odds at when the Olympics start.

At this point I'm opting to believe no news is good news for my own sanity.

I've stopped watching men altogether once he got injured, mostly because I knew that watching others would start to make me paranoid. The Olympics will be the first time I've seen any male skater skate a full program since before NHK. I actually think this has helped me remain about as calm as I can in terms of his competition, most of my anxiety of course was around his recovery. Just have to remind ourselves that no news doesn't necessarily equal bad news. We have to remind ourselves of what are actually facts:

- He was back on ice by Dec 16 shortly after pulling out of Japanese nationals.
- Javi mentioned he was already training again in his interview that was conducted on around Dec 20, but video was released in January.

So what we know for certain is he got back on the ice mid-December. Given that timeline he's likely to have been back on the ice in some capacity 3 weeks now, and the Olympic Team event is just about 4 weeks out. We can each make of it what we will, the only thing I know for sure is he'll be working as hard and as smart as he can to win that second Olympic gold. So my wish for him now is that he's training at full capacity and getting into good shape.

That is what I always do when Yuzuru skates in the midnight since I know I'll be totally useless in the workplace  Luckily this time there is no time difference at all for me in the Olympics, but I will regret for the rest of my life that I couldn't watch medal ceremony live of Sochi Olympics since I was almost dead after watching the men's events :dbana:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJMUBHCEWAw this video is so hilarious! I miss Yuzu, luckily it's only a month now :)

Strange thing is, I feel very calm now. Maybe because there is no news about him, but watching other competitions and I am still calm. I only hope now is that Yuzuru will show up and show us his skating (I'm sure I am going to cry only by seeing that ), then, I wish him for the best.

I think I am sort of calm because it happened now months ago so I have sort of accepted it. And then on top of planning the trip there which is a another level of stress, I just don't have room for much more. There are so many ways this mens event can go down and we will see soon enough. I am happy to be doing the events because I won't have as much thrown at me in terms of information regarding any kind of hype. I'll just know what I see. But when the time starts...oh boy it's gonna feel like I'm on a roller coaster. But in the moment...I just dunno. I've experienced Helsinki and I've experienced Boston and I've experience ACI which was like a combo of both. Just :pray::pray::pray:

There's a lot of uncertainty, but from what I've seen he's still among the favorites to make the podium alongside Nathan and Shoma. And perhaps me being his fan is clouding my judgement, but I think that if someone is capable of pulling off an Olympic win after barely seeing him this season, it's Yuzuru

The thing is, he earned world silver while dealing with severe injury. So I think a podium place is very realistic. And I believe gold is possible. If anyone can do it, it's him. Similar story with Medvedeva.

It might be that the SP carries him like in Sochi. Look what he was able to produce at ACI. The FS will be more of a challenge. But it's certainly some kind of destined blessing he's using familiar, proven programs.

How long are you going to stay in Korea? Since there is team event, it is going to be a long trip of two weeks or so? You must be very busy preparing for it right now!

I have been to Korea once, and it was in February. It was very cold but I and my friend decided to go out one night, then we got lost. But a kind Korean guy helped us, it was amazing that we didn't need the same language to understand each other, we only talked using our gestures

Yeah, definitely busy. I leave for Asia February 2nd and then I return on the 19th. I'll be in Hong Kong the first few days and then I want to go to Japan for a couple days. I'm doing the team event mens/pairs SP and free skate. And then men's practice on the 15th, SP on 16th, and LP on 17th. Hoping to fit japan between the Team LP and Men's SP. One of my best friends was adopted from Korea and grew up in the states, but she went back to Korea to teach English for a good 6-7 years. I'm going to be staying with her in seoul to cut down on hotel costs. She is actually leaving in March to come back to the US permanently so the games happened at the right time. I'll be relying on her a lot to get around. Hong Kong should be fine since I speak English. And I speak enough Japanese and know my way around Tokyo so Japan should be fine. I'm starting new Japanese classes tomorrow and I am sorta of kicking myself that I didn't just skip it this time.

Thank you, I literally checked the calendar reading your post! It sounds nice and reasonable you can go to three countries within 18 days and great that you have a friend in Korea, you won't have any trouble :) I think the flight between Korea and Japan takes only less than 3 hours, I hope you're able to enjoy Tokyo and buy all Yuzuru's items  Good luck on Japanese classes :hap10:

He trained only one week after collision and won GPF. That score of 288 would have been enough to win GPF 2017 ! He did it with one fall in sp one in LP . He had one quad in sp and 2 in LP.Also scoring then was still sane and not over-inflated like past 2 seasons.

I think if anyone can come back from injury and win, it's Yuzu. That said, it will be an extremely hard task - I just hope he enjoys the Olympics :)

I've got time to spare at the airport and nothing to do so I finally got to do a quick golden-ribbon Yuzu sketch :P
It's not as good as the ones by Interspectator (looove your work!) but I hope you like it anyway!! And sorry for the lame excuse of my photo, but it's just a small sketch anyway :P
