Nathan Chen

Jackie is reporting that 4lz is back, and a 6 quad FS layout: 4Lz, 4F3T, 4F, 4T, 4T2T, 4S, 3A, 3F1/2Lo3S

Oh, man, he really wants redemption.
A little scared for him tbh, but if he pulls it off, wow! (maybe he's a little bitter about not being the first to 4Lz in the/[this?] Olympics since I guess at least Vincent will be chronologically before him )

I'm a little worried, it is a very very risky program.
Hope Nathan's ankle can hold up! and BOI will be healthy and strong!

Ah, I really wish there were videos of those practice sessions... I'd love to watch this.

I think he might have just thrown in one extra quad, since in the actual run-through during practice he fell on the second 4F and doubled the first 4T... So in actuality he "only" did a 5 quad run-through of his FS...

So I don't think he'll actually do a 6 quad program, but he might try one extra quad if something goes wrong with his planned 4-5 quads (pops, falls...). Doing this during a run-through allows him to prepare for such a case.

He also did a 3Lo in the beginning of practice, so maybe that one is supposed to appear in his FS.

3lo is a routine warm-up jump Nathan do in his practice. I don't think he will do 3lo in his FS.

I think you mistook Vincent's practice with Nathan's, Nathan did not do back to back 4LZ-3T, 4F, 3A, Vincent did.

Nathan did too!
Chen: 3Lo, 3F, 3A(step), 1A, 3A, 4T, 2F, 4F, 3Lz, runthru (4Lz, 4F3T, 4F(fall), 2T, 4T3T, 4S, 3A(step), 3F1/2Lo3S), 4T(fall), 4T3T, 3A, 2Lz3T, 4Lz3T, 4Lz3T, 4F, 3A, 3A, 4T, 4T2T

(4Lz, 4F3T, 4F(fall), 2T, 4T3T, 4S, 3A(step), 3F1/2Lo3S)

Based on this run thru Nathan does appear to be attempting 6 quads. He was clearly going for two 4Fs, and he always likes to repeat 4T since it is his favorite jump.

(4Lz, 4F3T, 4F(fall), 2T, 4T3T, 4S, 3A(step), 3F1/2Lo3S)

I wonder what this would score. If the 4F fall was fully rotated I think this would score pretty high, no?

Anyway, Nathan's trying to give me a heart attack. I wish he'd scale back a little and go for a cleaner program, but that's not Nathan's mindset lol

I don’t really know why he’s in this going for broke mode tbh. I was hoping he would scale back a bit too and put more focus on the performance but I guess we are just on different wavelengths this season..

Nathan didn't do the Team USA men press conference - which I don't blame him for not doing. Christine Brennan said US Figure Skating said scheduling conflicts but I'm sure it was a conscious choice. I'm sure mostly all of the questions would be about his performance in the team event and I think he needs to be forward thinking right now. He did the interviews in the mixed zone after the skate but he's been silent ever since then.

^Even with the popped 4T the BV of the jumps would be 92.11. Clean with a 4T and 4T2T would be 98.71.

For comparison, if the other top jumpers skate their programs clean their jump BVs would be:

Boyang (4CC layout): 84.80
Shoma (4CC layout): 88.14
Yuzuru (practice: 4S, 4T, 3F/4S3T, 4T1Lo3S, 3A2T, 3Lo, 3Lz): 82.09

... He did the interviews in the mixed zone after the skate but he's been silent ever since then.

Nathan was part of a group interview with the team after the team placed third overall.

I don't claim to remember the details clearly, but not surprisingly, he was humble and gracious.
IIRC (and I am only paraphrasing), he said stuff along the lines of: he is proud of his teammates ... did not have a great skate himself and he knew that his teammates would back him up ... cool (I don't remember his exact word?) to have the bronze medal.

Don't remember where I saw this group interview. Might have been today's Olympic Ice/NBCSN?
It was taped in the arena, IIRC. After the "flower"/stuffed mascot ceremony, I think?? (So they would not have literally had their medals yet. Mirai's hair still was in a bun a la Miss Saigon.) Interviewer was Andrea Joyce, IIRC.

But I agree that it would be understandable if Nathan's modus for now is to go under the radar as much as possible.

Oh, awesome! I didn't see that - but I'm glad he talked a little bit. :)
