Savchenko and Massot capture Pairs gold

Well I guess S and M represented Germany but not in the same way others represent their country. They sort of bought their way in and picked Germany as the means to get to gold. But I guess a gold medal under a flag is a gold medal for that country.

I don't wanna start a discussion but is it really necessary to start that kind of discussion?

We see that in tons of other countries where skaters skate for another country.

And born there or not, I mean especially nowadays I think its great to see a country happy for someone that maybe wasn't originally from there.

Imo, they represented Germany in the best way possible

Right.....she is the poster girl for not giving up on a dream. I know there are a ton of deserving skaters but, I truly hope Patrick Chan win's the OGM.....It's the one medal that has eluded him and I truly hope wins.

I don't think this has any hope of being close to a reality. It would be a miracle for bronze. I just wish all those Aliona lovers would show the same for Patrick but fat chance. He is really going to have to skate and rebuild that confidence and triple axel. I fear he could not even qualify for the free skate.

I want to point out that Aliona skated for the Ukraine for 5 seasons; and for Germany for 15. She has also lived in Germany the entire time, and speaks the language. It’s not like random skaters skating for Azerbaijan without ever setting foot there.

Anyway, this si the one result that I wanted at these Olympics and I am over the moon for them. what a fairytale ending.

I would say that was the best pairs free skate of all time. I hope they continue, it looks like they are seriously considering going for at least 2 years, maybe even an entire quad. We have not seen the end of them!

I am so happy for both Aljona and Bruno! Unbelievable fairy-tale ending. I gave up on them after the short, but they both delivered in the free. I hope Aljona will write a book. She has gone through so much, I think her experience would make a unique story.

I am very sad about Steuer, fading into oblivion, forever punished for what he did as a teen....

Very happy for them. Aljona seems so happy and relaxed skating with Bruno. True chemistry win!

What did I miss? What happened?

I think Patrick himself already got his Gold from the team event. What I mean by it, that he values it just as it was the individual Gold. Obviously it's not the same, but for Patrick that Gold is something he deeply wanted and managed to get.

I didn't think that I'd ever witness anything in this world to compare to the beauty of G & G pair skating. Aliona (so many different spellings of her first name!) was like a little bluebird taking flight in the spring air. It will go down in my mind as one of the loveliest things I've ever seen. The most common spelling of her name I've come across is "Aliona." I noticed that the word "lion" is embedded in this version. She is indeed lion-hearted and fierce in her determination to fulfill her vision. And that vision is one for the ages.

The same exact thought occurred to me.

Aljona changed the spelling of her first name to the German spelling, about the same time Bruno received his citizenship.

Thank you @bruno_massot for opening the door to our dreams! What was once a dream is now a reality! Meeting you is now and forever my greatest achievement!

And Bruno answered to this in the comments:

You bring me to this level! And together, we achieve as a team the goal, the dream of our career.

How can you just not love these two.

She said, right now she could imagine to skate until the next Olympics. But Alexander König is relocating to Berlin, so she is unsure about the future.

Honestly, I believe this quality of Aljona and Bruno is exactly what has made them not just supremely successful but almost otherworldly in their connection and care. They are both exquisitely attentive to each other in their skating, starting with their eyes. This is another thing that makes me think of Gordeeva and Grinkov.
