2017-18 State of Russian Ladies skating

Sotnikova faded out, with injury being a convenient excuse. No one is injured for an entire quad.she skated in a few events, but was really out of her depth.

I wonder if Alina retires if she wins the OGM. I hope not. She should stay at least another 1-2 seasons.
What did Sotnikova do after winning OGM? I remember that she wanted to continue, but she was injured.

I hope Alina stays, too. Her jumps are much steadier than Adelina's, so Alina could have consistently strong results. However, injuries seemed to have impacted the careers of several Russian stars including Adelina, Julia, Liza, and even Evgenia, so it remains to be seen if someone can maintain this level while also staying healthy.

I was thinking more on her internal motivation to continue. Of course, external factors such as injuries can come up anytime and impact on her career.... but the most important will be what she wants.

When a fancam provides better quality than multimillion dollar broadcasting giant NBC... :rolleye:

Amazing quality.

0:40 - 1:11 is love. Especially from 1:03 to 1:11 is my favorite part. And I know she can perform that even better.
Really, what often mainstream broadcasters seem to forget is that figure skater is projecting mainly towards judging panel, so most of the feed and attention should represent that side of an audience.
It makes me especially mad in case of small choreographical details, which can be easily lost if director is trying too hard with shuffling between cameras. The fancam grabbed all the drama of black swan pretty nicely.

That's why I prefer only having 1 camera that doesn't zoom in unnecessarily, and that the camera is located at / near the judges' panel.

It's pretty sad that I find the camera work to be far worse at the large events than the tiny Russian locals. Why not just stick to one camera at a good spot?

The skycam especially ruins so many beautiful spins and makes step sequences impossible to appreciate, also. This program really is much better enjoyed like this.

I don't think Alina will retire if she wins, in her interviews she candidly says she has a lot to work on still and she knows she can become better. Sotnikova was different, she was injured after. But also Sochi was the only time Adelina skated clean SP and FS right and it was hard for her to repeat that. But Alina has been more consistently clean than even Evgenia in senior debut season so she will keep continuing and improving. Surprisingly, she's going through puberty now and her jumps unlike other skaters who lose them, seem to be getting higher actually and improving too, so she's gaining from her growth spurt the power of her jumps. Not sure if she can make it to next olympics with Kostornaia and Trusova, but actually her tech is still only rivalled by Trusova (and Scherbakova when she was healthy).

Um Sorry but how many clean shorts has Alina skated this season? And I don't think Kostornaia and Trusova are sure bets to be honest...
But I agree with everything else :)

And even right now.

See the protocol for Anna Shcherbakova.

She missed the second half with her combo by 1 second but that'd be 1.11 additional points. Then the 2 points for a choreo sequence and her Base Value is at 66.09 points. Alina Zagitova's is 66.01 points. Of course, GOEs can be argued but she still can compete with Zagitova at least in base tech, even without her quad.

Trusova's program of course is just pure insanity. 2 quads and 7 triples, all triples on second half.

International competitions:
Alina:
Fall: CoC, IdF
Hand down but not fall: IdF and Lombardia
All in SP

Evgenia's
Fall: Ondrej Nepal (FS), CoR (SP), SkAm (FS), Euros (FS)

I didn't count step outs/turnouts because I don't remember Evgenia's from that season, too many seasons ago!
But overall, in terms of falls, Evgenia fell more her first season (3 times) where as Alina fell once then had a hand down twice. I think because Alina messed up on just SP, it looked like it was a lot more. Overall Alina had a more consistent first season, but both of them were widely consistent compared to the rest.

My biggest concern for the junior ladies is that will they be able to jump the same when they grow up? Or maybe they won’t grow at all given how intense their training can be.

Yeah I saw that! Glad Anna is back to shape. But without her quads I think Alina will have the PCS cushion because she would be in seniors way longer like Evgenia has now. What set Alina apart from Evgenia was the huge difference in tech and more effortless jumps. I think Trusova's tech will make her unbeatable if clean but the 4T fall looked SO painful I hope she doesn't burn out early. Scherbakova pre-injury would have had insane tech too (huge enough to challenge even with senior PCS cushion for Alina). I love that these girls have insane jumps and are pushing the boundaries, and yes skaters get injured for much less (Anna broke her leg falling one 3Lo of all things). But it looks like so much stress on the body to do all the quads, especially since they don't have the power like the men to do to help them, and even with the men you see them burning out.

Evgenia also fell in the Euros FS
that of course just proves your point :)

they are both wonderful in their own ways

Ondrej Nepala for Evgenia wasn't only a fall either, she popped the start of the jump and it became a 0 pointer. And didn't Evgenia fall on 2A during 2016 Europeans FS also?

Zagitova definitely has been more consistent than Medvedeva during their debut season.

Olympics? Anna Shcherbakova would be on her 3rd senior season. I really don't think Zagitova would have any sort of an age-related PCS-cushion at that point. And considering Shcherbakova's capabilities for PCS...

Hm, for some reason I really hope Shcherbakova gets the quad Lutz. I don't think any girl would be expected to perform one this generation, but... That would be something to set her apart. Really set her apart.

This video got removed(Guess IOC got flustered seeing it get well over 100k views in a day) but at least I managed to record it for my collection.

Yeah but judges don't always go for capabilities for PCS (my opinion: Kaetlyn, Marin, Satoko, Kostornaia vs. Trusova) if their tech isn't a standout. I mean I think they went for Alina (who I think deserves the PCS, relatively of course) but only got it because of her massive tech advantage. Judges love having a consistent favourite for many years, so only when there is a huge wow factor technically do they really notice a skater, if that makes sense. That's why I think Trusova can be explosive in that regard. Without quads, Scherbakova has really difficult jumps as well, executed well, but Alina can already do those. Same with Trusova without quads - her Lz-Lo combo is better than Alina's but I don't see the judges caring. The backloading for Alina's jumps and the rippons and 3Lz-3Lo, repeated 2 most difficult jumps, was really smart for her as she was the first to do all that and it made her stand out in comparison to even Medvedeva. But with Alina being a leading lady, the only way to have a huge tech wow factor over her is with the quads or 3A. 4Lutz would be amazing. But I really saw her potential to be the new "bomb" as per TAT with 4T-3T-3Lo.

She also had a fall at IDF on the 3lz in the short.
