That was the worst SP ever for US women (OG)

I could be completely off about this one, but I just don’t think that it’s the cool thing to be a lady single skater in the USA anymore. Little girls are going up now to want to do either other sports or they’re seeing more options like ice dance or pairs.

This is true. I might also add that it pays zero money until you're national champion and even then, you could end up working in a clothing store like Ashley had to. The risk and expense is often not worth the reward that comes with it.

Osmond also pre-rotates, so does Daleman. They're not really consistent.

They jump huge, there's a significant difference.

Adelina Sotnikova was not as consistent either because of her big jumps, but that kind of quality needs to be considered and valued.

For the LP, I think all 3 have the potential to move up. The panel has been lenient on technical calls, so if Karen and Mirai can land jumps cleanly they will probably get full credit. Caro, Gabby, and possibly Kaori can be caught if they're off. However, Maria is in the mix for a top 10 placement, too. It's hard to see any of the Americans making up the deficit against Satoko and Kaetlyn to make it on the podium.

Honestly, Russia is such a big player in women's figure skating because they have one of the most rigorous sport programs in the world. No doubt that these girls are pushed to their very limit every day as young as possible. In US and Canada, we have a much more "casual" approach to competitive skating- a girl decides she loves figure skating, is talented, and trains hard to pursue her dream. In Russia it seems that children are recruited very young and begin their rigorous training programs very young. If anybody has seen the short documentary with Evgenia/Alina/Eteri, it is obvious their lives revolve around training, their weight, diet, off-ice training. IN the US and Canada they work extremely hard but still have time to make friends and do regular teenage things, go on vacations, etc. Maybe a national thing, maybe a coaching thing (re: Gracie Gold).

Tbh I would rather keep watching our talented skaters than have them be pushed to their breaking point before they are even 18.

Polina T has huge jumps with delayed rotation, no one among judges gives a duck about it.

Polina has poorly choreographed programs this season, and lacks the performance charisma of the top 2 Russians. I don't know how Alina ended up with very different (and better, IMO) choreography when they all work the same team.

Where in the ISU rule book does it say winning events = rise in the PCS? Which criteria does it specify that winning medals is a bullet point for earning points in the PCS? This is favoritism.
When you win events, you are skating your programs in front of Judges and that is the best critiquing there is.

Polina T choreographies were clearly watered down (even the SP if you compare it was more convincing in juniors) in order to make her jumps consistent because she was coming back from a series of injuries.

I hope they'll work on that for the next season.

I hope she comes back next season. She may not since no longer chance to go to the Olympics.

Should she be penalized on GOE because of her choreo? I don't think so.

My goodness people. The men have 3 in the top 10 and we want to have a party. The women (potentially, we are close) land 3 in the top ten and everyone freaks out. Also, I believe Bradie would have scored better had she not skated FIRST. That's a terrible slot. I think a good bit of the problem is money. In Russia and China and I'm sure other countries, my understanding is if you show promise you are provided training, and the training continues as long as you provide results. You have to make sacrifices like leaving home and staying in a dorm. But here, the person with the potential to be the GOAT could be born to a poor family and never get to even learn to skate. Some of the alpine skiiers and other sports crowdfund, but at the age a person has to start skating they can't really do that. i still see plenty of little girls at the rink at my gym. We've got to have some way to find the ones with the most potential and get them some top notch free training. And get them all with a sports psychologist early.

Since this thread is going that way again, how does one achieve huge height on jumps? Minimal pre-rotation? Great speed? Muscle strength? Something else?

Just jump a lot (even without rotating)

I did basketball when i was younger and everyone told me to just jump a lot in order to improve my elevation.
