Deniss Vasiljevs

Ah, yes... lavenderblossom is correct, it is the little speech bubble part, which I forgot to translate...
It goes like this,
Stephane: haven't you grown a little taller?
Deniss: I think I am about 174cm now. about as tall as you, coach!
S: But you have longer set of legs!
D: how about the arms?
S: Your arms are longer than mine, too!
D: Really? But your hairstyle is longer than mine!"

Thank you! :thank:

A little bio of Deniss in Latvian, the first pic and last 2 pics are new https://www.instagram.com/p/BfnJjupByWt/

oh my, we are almost at 100 pages! Wow! :yahoo:

Our first Olympic judge Agita Ābele was interviewed at the Latvian Television “Sports Studio”. She was asked if Deniss should be happy about the 19th place. She answered affirmatively.

“If he can not jump quads while others do even 6 such jumps and get 60-70% of the grades for the technical part, then he is not competitive for a high position."

The reporter told what Deniss said before the competition-

“I do not want to remain in memory as a guy who desperately tries to jump a quad, and in the case of the failure, goes home feeling miserable. I want to be remembered as a guy who skated from the heart and beautifully." Did he succeed?

"Yes, and I am very pleased about it. We strongly feel that some more experienced athletes are so determined to compete and gain points and that their inner tension is clearly perceptible. And we feel when the athlete is enjoying his skate. We each have our maximum potential, and if we are able to show it and enjoy at the same time, then both judges and spectators feel it instantly. It is important whether it is just a rivalry, a hard work or an enjoyment of art. That is the difference.

I love Deniss' attitude to sports, that he enjoys doing his job.:clapper:
I would like every athlete to gain this positive feeling as it always finds the way to the hearts of the spectators and judges."

She is sure he will improve step by step.:)

Thank you for sharing the information. In terms of skating from his heart, I think he did it to his best at that situation (i.e skating with mistakes and Olympic pressure). In my opinion, he was feeling it more during Euro for both SP and FP. In terms of "feeling miserable", I think he was disappointed with himself for sure, but I believe he can shake it of quickly and be focus again :)

Also, I hope his coming English exam will go well. From what I remember, he's taking it some time between Olympic and World. Do your best Deniss! Ace those grammar questions! (in the recent documentary, he said he needed to work on grammar) :D

I  this quote from Deniss:

“I do not want to remain in memory as a guy who desperately tries to jump a quad, and in the case of the failure, goes home feeling miserable. I want to be remembered as a guy who skated from the heart and beautifully."

Yes, yes, yes, that sums up wonderfully what I appreciate about Deniss' skating. :hap10:This may not be popular, but I could care less about the quad. I care that Deniss skates from the heart and skates beautifully.

And if he needs English grammar practice, I volunteer:biggrin:

Glad to hear that skating from the heart is a priority with him. IMHO a jump is such a fleeting thing, skating from the heart is an attitude and a way of life. I think he's on the right track.

Actually, he is going to take his English exam in August. It's for those who for one reason or other (e.g. illness) were not able to do it in the right time. The exam is around 15th March, so it would be insane to take it then. I don't think Deniss has any problems in conversational English, but if he wants to get a high level in the final exam ( he wants for sure), he has to master high-intermediate level or even advanced English. He said that after Worlds he will go home for some time and learn with private tutors and it won't be only English. He really deserves my admiration for what he is doing for his education!:clapper:

I just may use this Deniss quote and the judge's quote in Patrick's thread. Because that's how he has felt as well, and here it is stated so eloquently. Jumps only take up a small fraction of the program and yet they can be worth so many more points. I'll just go off in a corner by myself and enjoy the skating, thank you very much! I love how eloquent Deniss is!!!

Hello dear Deniss FF, I know I've been absent for a loooooong time, but I need to jump back in to maybe ask for help. I'm going to Milan (in basically 2 weeks :eeking: ) and wanted to get a present for Deniss to throw on the ice. But I'm not sure what to get - is there anything he said he likes/asked for? (Like Boyang and his Spidermans or now Dragons for example). I remember a, ehm... iguana? xD If not, I guess I'll have to go with the cutest thing I can find

He said in an interview a little while ago he really likes lions (because he's a Leo) and dragons (especially Toothless from HTTYD) :)
edit: I found the interview https://ru.sputniknewslv.com/sport/20171223/6864181/sportsmen-figurist-sport.html?mobile_return=no
There is a good list! He likes all kinds of mythical creatures :luv17: White tigers, lynxes, falcons, salamanders and eagles... reading that I really hope he got gifted a Soohorang at the Olympics :)

Some lines from one interview:

Deniss also gets a lot of all sorts of plush toys. What does he do with them?
"My cousin gets them," Deniss explains, "every time he comes to our house, he gets a toy as a gift. So, all my toys smoothly flow to him, but I have only some of the most important for me. I'm happy to share, there are plenty of them."

And he really likes all the stuffed toys Lavenderblossom mentioned.

This video was taken at the Worlds 2017. Around 8.05 he is picking out the bags with his gifts all the time repeating, “This is mine and this is mine. (He looks happy and satisfied, doesn’t he?) I like presents!” :luv17: When asked what happens with them, he says, “When I go to competitions, I take my travelling bag only half full…”
But it was a year ago…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZesNpcYCxw

To my mind it’s a pretty tradition to throw gifts on the ice-you show your appreciation. It’s a pleasure to the skater and it’s a real joy to the kids who will get them. But I don’t think that the organizers in Milan will simply collect all the toys. I think that skaters will choose themselves which they would like to keep and which give away.

So you have still some time to find your own special and the cutest gift for Deniss. But you can ask somebody from the service to pass it to him just in case.

Some time ago he said that he wanted to open a confectionery for his mom, so people could buy freshly baked buns and cakes. That could work out. Obviously, his abilities are run in his family. I'd like to be a customer.:yes2: It's good that he likes cakes and sweets. He needs some sugar. He is on such a strict diet.

He needs some sugar. He is on such a strict diet.
Chocolate should be an important part of even the strictest diet  It makes people feel happy.
But, talking about a diet: I'm pretty sure Deniss selected such a sybaritic dessert just because Stephane left for the AOI tour ;)

I accidentally found in the magazine "Sports Newspaper" an article about Deniss, more specifically his short diary on all 12 days. He was asked to write it before the Olympics. There are also photos and Deniss' drawings. It's interesting. I chose 2 days and put into English. Maybe somebody will enjoy.;)

February 12

Today I have a holiday, the last before the competition. I finally have the opportunity to get to know more about the fascinating country I have come to. I am allowed to have more freedom in choosing food! The village has a great athletic restaurant with a wide buffet that works day and night. It has a great variety of dishes, both Korean and international, but we do not have the option of replacing cappuccino (with ordinary milk) with soy milk. Therefore, we improvise with almond milk and call it the zebracappucino (double espresso with the cup of frothy almond milk to create foam) in honor of my coach's famous Olympic costume.:coffee:

Kannines is on the coast and as we have a free time, we go to the beach. There we find a traditional Korean restaurant, where we taste a delicious fish soup (although I do not really like fish soup) with local fermented vegetables and fresh sushi. Delicious! I had an overall calm evening and a great holiday.:hap93:

February 16

Short program day, the beginning of the Olympic race. I can not say that I am not be a bit nervous. Taxi waits for us at 6.45, but the training on the ice begins at 7.55. It is a very important preparation. We are not accustomed to skate so early in the morning and, frankly, it's not easy. However, I manage to make all the jumps well and get through the whole program. Now I have to cope with waiting, because the race starts at 12.36 with a 6-minute warm-up. At 13.18 I hear "On the ice Deniss Vasiljevs, representing Latvia." Breath in. The program starts really well with a perfect combination of triple Lutz and toe loop.:yay:

Something went wrong when I was preparing for the next jump-3A. I can not get the height I usually can. It's a fall and a loss of score ...:con3: At that time, I understand that choosing a program to increase the number of the score was wrong. I truly want to enjoy the rest of the program, to show a great skating and share my emotions with the audience. That's exactly what figure skating means to me. Music stops, "Tosca, sei tu!" I'm aware that the performance was not as good as it could be. I'm disappointed that the error was so expensive. However, I am glad. I'm glad I shared this moment with the audience and enjoyed my performance. Glad to be an Olympian!:)
