2017-18 State of Russian Ladies skating

Is that really a thing?

I mean for certain aspects that's awesome, finally she would get the scores she always deserved but at the same time why move? She was doing fine with Angelina Turenko, she might lost that consistency at CSKA.

Plus what does that mean for Radionova and Sotskova?

I can't confirm it right now but this rumor is strong at Russian forums

Gubanova needs her jump technique fixed. If Buyanova can do that, and is willing to, then sure, go to her. But... Radionova's really regressed under her, I think (yes, she had a good performance at CoC, but she had good performances with Goncharenko, too)

I think Gubanova needs Mishin. Teaches good technique, has good reputation, doesn't have many high level ladies right now, and doesn't really want to do the crazy programs, and Gubanova doesn't either, it'd appear

Buyanova won't do anything to fix her technique, she is not a technician, her skaters do not train as much as the others, the only thing she does care is the artistry but that's mostly because of the other people who are working with her at CSKA.

Sotskova's technique on the axel is worse now, Radionova did improve on the posture true, but she didn't fix all her mistakes on the jumps with Buyanova,... and they both lost their consistency. Not sure what to make of this.

Mishin has Alisa Fedichkina now.

If Gubanova is moving to Buyanova, it's because she wants spots and scores, not some technical improvement

I miss so much all those threads like "Can anybody beat clean Medvedeva" which later turned to a "Can anybody beat Medvedeva at all"... Good old times... Seems like nobody even dares to question Eteri' girls chances to win now

I agree. I followed Radionova into watching ladies skating, and I don't think moving to Buyanova helped her technically at all.

By the way, what's the prospect of Diana Guseva getting a JGP assignment?

Her path seems the same with Zagitova's (although Guseva's results were much better than Zagitova's before her junior season) - injuries and low results. But then something happend with Zagitova - she became very consistent. Anyway, probability of 'something happen' with Guseva is about 10%, especially after Khabibulina's move to pairs and overloading of the field by other talented skaters. I wouldn't be surprised if she also moves to the pairs, which is very sad but what can you do.

I hope her jumps would improve this summer. She has such amazing SS.

Gubanova moving to Buyanova? Well, I'm not sure what to think of that. On one hand, some more politicking could help her but on the other, I don't think that Buyanova could really help her fix her technique and I also consider Buyanova the weakest of the "top" Russian coaches. It seems like her skaters always struggle to skate clean and that really cannot be a good thing if one wants to improve their status within Russian figure skating.

Still, probably should be an improvement over her current coach who really isn't doing her any favors as far as I'm concerned.

The only girl who can beat an Eteri girl is another Eteri girl!!!!

I'm curious if this means that our sport is destined to be dominated by prepubescent girls forever into the future, like Carlo Fassi warned when they first did away with figures.

And props to Eteri for pushing and transforming the sport the way she has. In many ways, I think Alena Kostornaia and Sasha Trusova kind of epitomize the "ultimate skaters" that Eteri's strategies can create.

Kostornaia is so musical and artistic, her skating is fluid and beautiful. Big jumps with a lot of flow out and beautiful spins - and she's capable of gold medal worthy TES, too, with backloading, two 3-3s in the second half. She's a skater that Eteri-haters and fans who long for "the good ol' days" can really love. She finishes her movements.

Trusova is an even better jumper than Kostornaia, and obviously, QUADS. The greatest female jumper ever, at 13. No one can complain about her technique or her jumps being too small or too muscled. Decent spins, but not amazing. She doesn't have the skating skills or musicality of Kostornaia, but she has a very raw it factor and diva attitude that can sell the heck out of a program.

In most ways, both ladies have kind of already surpassed Alina and Evgenia. Alena isn't as technically accomplished as Alina, but she's beyond her in terms of artistry and skating skills.

I also just desperately need Gubanova to prove herself and get to that top level. Her skating and expression is just on another level entirely than any other lady in the world, IMO. Buyanova won't improve her at all - probably just give her tacky programs and some political connections. I feel like she's too old to thrive under Eteri. I actually think moving to Plushenko would be good for her, or moving to a "total package" North American coach who teaches great jumps like Orser or Raf (though that's not gonna happen).
