Ice Dance Annual Meeting

So in essence, they're actually abolishing the free dance.

God. Entertainment. I can just see the dumpster fire this will cause. Candyman galore.

Important Clarification: During the Q&A one of the coaches asks them about it.
answer: no, you can entertain with a sad story...we ask you that the audience and the judges are involved with the program and you get great applause.

Oh I see, thank you.

But that is so ambiguous though. Huh. I mean great applause. The crowds give great applause after bad skates to encourage skaters sometimes.

Yeah, but from what I gathered the idea is that the programs draw you in, you don't look at the clock and think: Oh no, how can I bare 2 more minutes of this?
The applause is not the measure but the audience (and mainly judges) reaction to a good program is.

Yeah, I get it though IMO still really ambiguous. There's a lot of room to fudge there, especially with the whole how engaged the judges are. That is so subjective.
For the audience, sure, you can tell for some programs that they are fab but on the other hand, fans of a certain couple will always applaud and be engaged etc, especially if we're talking home crowd. Of course, I guess we'll have to wait to see how all of this evolves. Thank you for all the clarifications.

Maybe that is partly the point? If you have a bad skate but don't give up and at least have the crowd involved... well here is your 1 point bonus for not giving up. If the crowd cares how you did... i guess you engaged them.

The wording did come up, and the ISU said that they are willing to change it, as well as the value of the addition/deduction.
They asked the coaches present to talk with them during the events and to call them if they want to talk with them.

Well, maybe. Sure. And on principle I wouldn't mind that actually.
It's just that I'm mostly always weary of anything that opens up more room for vagueness. Especially as the whole judges bit, ie to what extent they're engaged, is potentially very iffy.

I mean we've had discussions over different approaches from say Asian skaters and how much more internal their skating can be, so for example, they'd be really in trouble here as even now, this type of skating doesn't translate so well quite often.

Ohh i agree... this has trainwreck written all over it. It is a nice idea and something to encourage... but maybe this should be more for junior and under level? I think at Senior it could just be used to politically be obnoxious. I don't want the deduction to turn into the "be nasty and tell the skater to retire" button and that is what i fear. Maybe doing this without the deduction would be better.

Yes, I agree on both of those but especially removing the deduction. That'd be a major improvement for me as seriously it basically reminds me of those reality shows and three Xs and you're out.

Another thing though, considering we've had the whole is this even a sport for quite a while now, adding something like this is certainly not going to help.

You have a point... this does start to not pass the sniff test.

The thing is I don't think the intent was bad...just seems those behind this are out of touch with how this is likely to been seen/implemented.

How about just a cash prize for "audience favorite" that would motivate teams and get the audience involved but would not impact the outcome. I mean I think other sports have this type of award and it is handled harmlessly.

Yes, I don't think there's any bad intention behind this, it's just that once you go down into details, it really is iffy. And it's good to try out new things but this seems like a bad choice. Of course, we'll see what ends up in the final version in June.

I'm always here for more money for skaters, so I approve but goodness, ISU is too cheap for that!

LOL at the idea that this "bonus" won't be applied uniformly to the later groups.

Last group everyone gets its. Second to last half get it half get zero. Earliest group gets mostly negatives and a few zeros second group is mostly zeros an a few negatives. At least that is my prediction.

Exactly, how explain that a medalist does not deserve the bonus. There are teams who dont deserve it IMO, but they wont dare to dont give it.
