Nathan Chen

^^ yale is located in a quiet place with plenty of ice rinks nearby, so it might be good for Nathan to focus on his medicine study and figure skating practice.

But he would need a coach. Who's near Yale? The Boston area at least has some top skaters and coaches. I really think the California unis are the best because he'd have access to state of the art facilities and trainers/physios as well as a large skating community.

In interviews he's said he wanted to go to Harvard, and other skaters have gone there so I could understand that. I believe Yale means he would take time off from skating.

who are the known figure skating coaches near Harvard.

Some posted before, that even in NYC, even Canadian coaches frequently come to visit and teach. so it maybe manageable.

Didn’t Nathan just say that his plan was to stay in California with Raf? I’m not surprised he got accepted to Yale - but I’d be super surprised if he actually wound up going there.

from worlds presser, Nathan said he will continue work with Raf for a couple of years, he did not specifically mention that he will stay in Cali, unless, he said that somewhere else.

I think it would be hard to work with Raf from the east coast.. I honestly think he applied to the ivy leagues on the east coast because if he had won at the Olympics, he probably would have retired and gone to school. I imagine he will be staying in California and going to school there now that he has decided to continue - but we will see.

Early in this season, Nathan has expressed that he will compete for another 4 years, because he started to feel the love from his fans. He indeed wanted to retire after 2018, but that idea (retire right after 2018) seems is his earlier ideas, it seems he already changed his opinion about retirement going into this OG season.

Offhand I can only think of Mark Mitchell, Ross's coach. These are the coaches at Boston FC

I see Maxim Naumov's parents there, too. Matt Savoie, but I don't know if he's ever coached a top level student.
If he has enough sponsorship money he might be able to fly in a coach once a month, but I think it would be hard for him to even win Nationals that way.

NYC is near Hackensack NJ where a lot of top skaters have trained but it doesn't sound like he applied to Columbia.

That guy who trained Ross Miner - but think he quit - I really have no idea.
I know people who have chosen Yale over Harvard for various reasons. Not everyone wants to be in the more crazy college area of Boston/Cambridge.
Maybe he needs a bit of a break - the season ended well but the Olympic experience was very stressful. From my own experience (atypical high school experience, graduated early and deferred college for a few years), I absolutely understand the pull of a normal college campus experience being very strong.
I think attending any college is going to result in Nathan having to reduce training time - not just on ice, but I think he does hours off ice every day, as well as PT.

3hrs on ice 3hr off ice. pretty standard for American figure skaters (maybe a little bit more).

I seriously think that do full course load pre-med college and maintain his current level of figure skating training is impossible regardless which university he will choose to go to.
especially if Nathan plans to train for 4A or 4-4 next season.

Raf said Nathan won 2018 nationals with just 3 days of training:biggrin: (if you choose to believe him)

But I don't think he can keep his jumps without Raf. He started losing them after just a few months with Marina. Without Raf he could probably maintain his triples and 4T, which might be good enough to make the US team, but probably not enough to beat Vincent.

is there a video/article that Nathan specifically talked about that. or maybe some of his competition where he lost his jumps that I would watch.

BTW, Nathan know his figure skating the best, he will make the best decision.

EDIT: Nathan trained in OG by himself for 2 days (with the permission of his coaching team, since Raf has to be with Adam)

Correct me if I'm wrong but I have thought UC Irvine is a relatively prestigious university for premed.
Nathan can go to Harvard for medical school afterwards. And he can save enough money from sponsorship and
lucrative Japanese shows for very expensive medical school tuition.

I think he went back to Raf after 2016 TdF, where he was a mess in the FS. He had no 3A and the 4S was gone as well.

why do you think without Raf he will lose all his quads except for 4T?

Yuna perfected his triples and left BO after 2010 and just trained with his Korean coaches(humble no-body korean coaches, her first figure skating coaches) and her jumps are as lovely as ever.

isn't that Raf just said all Nathan's quad is 100% now except for 4S.

I just think that ability to teach quads is an extremely rare skill for a coach, whereas countless coaches even in small countries have students who can land triples.

idk and what Yuna did was very impressive. But I think triples can’t be compared to quads - even Michelle Kwan got 3T back recently and maybe some other triples as well.

Yuna maintained her highest Tech difficulty (3LZ-3T also the highest tech difficulty of the ladies field at that period) with her humble Korean coaches.

Yuna actually took one year off and did just shows, and come back for 2 seasons going into his second OG. actually the first season is just one competition, but her decision is correct, if you are aiming for second OG, you gotta comeback at least for 2 seasons, Same for ice dancers V/M only take one year break during 4 years of OG cycle.

Her jumping form especially at 2013 is considered even better than before.

this is some kinda example.

if Raf helped other male skaters master quads (not just Nathan), if he does, I will give him credits for the rare ability to train quads.

Nathan is a special talent. Do you know any other male skaters mastered quads or improved their quads under Raf's instruction.

But I kr, under Team BO, Cha from Korea leaned 3A as well as 2 new quads, that little Canadian boy already started to land 4LZ and ofc Yuzuru get his 4S, 4loop, and attempted 4lz, Javi's quad also improved quite a lot. Nam also got 2 quads (not sure all of it is under BO tho) then left.
So there seems a shared trend among all BO's male skaters in terms of their quads progress.
