Marin Honda

I don't know what to say. Marin has good SS for a skater her age and the "it" factor, but not the jumps, and perhaps not the most suitable mentality. Raf can help her with the jumps, but I fear her SS might stagnate. Maybe it'll turn out to be a Mao Asada situation.

 Mao had some of her best competitive results when she was with Rafael. I think technically she was at her best during that period. She had more power in her skating without losing her flow and lightness. I also think he did a good job helping Michelle stay competitive during her twilight years.

I think this is a good decision for Marin. I always thought Hamada could not give her attention equally to all her skaters. While some skaters may thrive training with their rivals, I don’t think Marin is the type. The only conflict I see is in temperament. Raf admires skaters who are very hardworking and diligent: Michelle, Mao. If Marin is more the artistic, slacker type, it might be challenging, but then again he did manage to coach Ashley to a worlds silver medalist.

a) what mao asada situation? mao's mother was very sick that's the reason she eventually split with raf.
a) marin is hard-working enough as long as people don't compare her directly with satoko.
b) I still don't get where all this question about her mentality come from? If you compare her with other japanese ladies, she actually has a pretty decent result at big competitions?

I think the impression came from an interview that Raf gave a few months ago. He said that he dropped Mao because she kept delaying coming to US to train and he did not know that her mother was sick until afterwards.

As in she makes her jumps better. I didn't criticize her results there. What you're saying is exactly what I mean -- that maybe she won't lose her qualities, and become a better jumper.

Marin has great skating skills already. They won't evaporate with her skating with Raf. Plus she will probably work with good choreographers that will help her. I think with Raf the situation would be tricky if she didn't have good skating skills and was depending on him to improve that, then i would be worried but that's not the case. And it's not like her skating skills were rewarded anyways in the judging so if she manages to make her jumps more reliable with Raf (which is something he is good at as a coach) she will be fine. Better skating skills and presentation also come with confidence, which rely on your ability to land your stuffs.

I'm optimistic about this. Maybe aside from the technical work, a change of scenary will help her find new motivation and new challenges. I don't think Marin was Hamada's priority and i don't think their tensed relationship was helping her at all this year. I also don't think Hamada has the technical abilities to help Marin, since all her skaters have fantastic packaging and overall skating but struggle with jump consistency and URs

Yes, I agree 100%. Mie has come a long way with Marin. She helped Marin develope her outstanding artistry and always provided her a high-quality and challenging package. But I think at this point there’s little left that Mie can do for Marin. Marin can’t (and shouldn’t IMO) become another Satoko, who is Mie’s ideal skater. What Marin needs to improve is jumping technique and athleticism - and Raf is arguably the best at teaching these. I’m sure Marin’s her natural grace, musicality, spontaneity and skating skills will still shine through.

I don't think that Marin will regress in terms of SS after training with Raf because she already has an amazing base. You don't just lose your skating skills after switching coaches. Ashley, Adam, and Nathan don't have good skating skills because their basics were never strong and raf didn't develop that aspect of their skating.

I don't think they'll regress. My original post was about how they might stagnate, because that's what I see in Raf's students. Marin has a good base, that can be built upon to make her SS amazing. But I fear there might be complacency, where the jumps improve, but the SS stay the same.

Oh in that case I agree:thumbsup:. With proper development, her SS could potentially be as superb as Carolina's or Mao's. Unfortunately, Raf's not the right coach for this aspect of skating.

Perhaps, but she'll look like a complete skater when the level of her jumps and SS match! There are trade-offs with Orser too. Yuzuru and Jun Hwan have floppy arms at times:laugh:

I just Saw Marin presentation in SOI and I think that she skated faster, also she la thinner, the program is fun but I hope she Will pick another direction on her competitive programs, I'm happy

it was a nice EX that proves she is not just a princess on the ice but can do something else, I hope to see more of that in her upcoming competitions.

To go to RAF was perhaps the best decision Marin good luck.

I have an unpopular opinion then. I love Marin but as soon as the song played I was horrified :(

Never liked that song, have hard enough of it everywhere, and the choreography doesn't really appeal to me. I'm glad it's just an EX. I hope her SP and FS for next season will be wonderful.

I'm happy that she listens to Carly Rae Jepsen because EMOTIONS is one of my favorite pop albums of all time. I'm used to her EXs being always fun and girly, it's clear that's the style she enjoys to express. Also it's not a Marin EX without a prop or rolling on the ice. I wonder she choreographed it herself or Cathy did. It reminds me of the JAL program.

Exactly! :laugh2::yahoo:

Interesting tidbit: Does anybody else here watch Terrace House on Netflix? The show's commentators mentioned Marin on the new season of the show because her sister told one of them that Marin is a fan! XD That would be so cool to see her on it one day as a guest commentator or something.
Someone talked about it a couple of pages back.

This season has been tough. Can anyone share what her siblings said in the end?
