Nathan Chen

speaking of Ballet and Patrick.
I remember Marina once described him like a moving "insert that famous male ballet dancer's name here, I cannot spell it, I think he is Russian" on ice. You can ask Patrick fans on his FF for details, I remembered it was mentioned in interview articles.
Patrick mostly studied modern dance and incorporated that into his figure skating during the later half of his career.
Patrick's SS is very very special, everyone in figure skating community(I mean coaches and skaters) knew it.

@oatmella i am talking about this leap/jump

in the same program Patrick also did this leap here followed by a move that Nathan fans here must be all very familiar with

Just rewatched this masterpiece of Patrick. gosh he is such a great skater, miss him dearly.

i have to say maybe Nathan's Port de Bras is better than Patrick's but Patrick's SS and blade work is certainly better than Nate.

Maybe for ballet he would have to pull his shoulder blades down/more flat but as I haven’t skated myself - the ballet placement might not work functionally for skating - like for quads and stuff lol
I think his shoulders are fine😍

I don't know what is required for jump quads, but if we are talking about shoulder position in jumping air time form, Nathan's shoulders are actually pretty low(good). Some skaters will raise their shoulders up the so-called "wear yours shoulders as ear rings" that is not suppose to be good.

but outside jump, the posture is pretty much the same as ballet, coach usually wanna you to lower your shoulder and feel the extension from your shoulder to finger tips and have a good posture like ballet.
you don't have to do that. sometimes, kids are lazy and forget about holding their arm position, arms are not necessary to help your balance. a strong core/upperbody is more important. but coaches always ask skaters to have good posture and keep their arms extended

>I think I honestly underestimated the amount of girls who are crazy for Nathan Chen, lol. One girl was in tears meeting him!
>He's definitely got a growing fanbase of screaming girls if Worlds was anything to go by!

>>Nathan was a little shorter in person than I had pictured.

I can see that. He's got wonderful proportions so he appears taller than he is.

Something I noticed about Nathan's skating is that when he is skating to new music- whether it be other skater's music in practice or music that he is performing for the first time like Bolero, there is a freshness and expression to his skating that often doesn't appear in his programs when he is focused on fitting in all his technical content. I also wonder if Nathan gets bored with skating to the same music all the time. I hope they can figure out how to bring out that freedom into his competitive programs. My favorite performance of Nemesis is the one he performed in Japan in an exhibition last year after Japan Open.

I love the camera angles too. The one time that the opening of the program wasn't ruined by a tight closeup! Here, you can see his entire body, and with show lighting, this program is so much more dramatic.

Have you meet Nathan in person?

I also realized that Nathan is attracting screaming young girls fans like crazy.

No, not yet. I'm seriously thinking of at least seeing him compete in person this upcoming season though! I'll try not to cry or scream. No promises though. :slink:

I have also noticed the teen fangirls. Haha. It's fun.

oh ok. I have no idea about jumps. I will honestly say that ballet doesn't really necessarily directly translate to the ice - but the ballet training does - if that makes sense? I mean Nathan's shoulder blades (what are referred to as 'chicken wings') aren't totally flat - but honestly the movement in skating is not the same as ballet, so I don't expect the placement to be exactly the same.
As for Patrick - maybe a better way to explain it is that his epaulement, particularly head positions, do not really follow those of classical ballet.

use head and neck is very important in figure skating skills, it could be used very differently in ballet

I would say Nathan's epaulement is definitely more classical - but obviously not 100% the same placement as in ballet.

head and neck is very important in figure skating skills (including edges, spins, jumps), I don't think there is a specific placement for head position that is absolute required like in classic ballet, maybe that is the difference.

haha. She is a well known dance physio from Australia - she has other youtube videos that younger girls like to refer to, like how to break in pointe shoes. I totally get the 'chicken wings' problem lol - but doesn't seem totally critical for figure skating imo and the movement is quite different so idk.

i don't think Nathan has "chicken wing" problem. maybe his shoulders are not naturally open like some others. And sometimes, he hunches.

Aww this is so sweet, his growing maturity and the boyish charm is the perfect formula for screaming fans.

@zebobes haha that’s what many fans were complaining on IG about how even as we watched the last Nemesis of the season the cameramen still didn’t get it right. The JP ex had the best angle and I think he should be rewarded with a small medal. They need to adopt after seeing first time how a program is performed and not have this auto zoom habit in the future, who knows, he may have another uniquely opening again.

yeah i don't think he has the 'chicken wing' problem. but i mean, i've seen his shoulder blades stick out more than the ballet ideal before. he's also had back injury in the past, so there could be some imbalance in his muscles - idk.
I think you are way more picky about his posture than anyone I know in the ballet world lol
I kr.
yeah:biggrin: I have very high standard for Nathan Boi, no pressure, no pressure:biggrin:

Hey can I expect more videos of Nathan from SOI tonight?

I think sheetz said it’s not broadcast on tv and no recording allow inside so I hope someone can skillfully record a bit.
