2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

Why dnt Russian girls get coaches frm USA and Canada? I hoped some Eteri Girls train with Brian Orser to up their skating skills and choreo.

I don't think Liz Tursunbaeva has skating skills near Medvedeva, Zagitova, Kostornaya, etc. Gabby fails to impress as well. No, thanks.

good joke

Why should they want to go to someone like Brian.. Who haven't trained any good girls since Kim....

Why would they want to. The Russian skaters are performing at the very edge of what is possible in Ladies Skating, at this moment. They are pushing the envelope of technical performance, fabulous and consistent skating technique, while their choreography is contemporary and fresh.

It's far more interesting than the staid and tired catalogue of work from the North American schools of skating.

The question should be why aren't American, and Canadian skaters trying to compete with the best, and employing the best Russian and Japanese coaches, to up their skating skills and choreo

Well he did train Javi and Yuzu as total packaged skaters who have both artistic and technical brilliance. Im all for Eteri girls. I l
Root for Eteri girls only. But I like americanized Choreos and skating style better than russin choreo. Zagitovas choreo were a bit too rushed for me.

But I suppose Eteri girls do have something in their training regime that makes them stand out and keep dominatin laides field.

It would be interesting topic to discuss, i mean "why orser doesn't have any good female skaters now" when he has the best male skaters. May be consider creating a new thread in the edge? Could easily turn into bash fests though...

Dnt knw how to create a new thread.

My answer is this.

Both Yuzu and Javi are rare talent jewels.

Orser is one of the best coaches in the world.
The magic only works when there is a marriage of drive, effort, rare jewel talent and orsers coaching.

Orser is a great coach but he isnt persay a magician.

Thats why I think rare jewel talents like zagitova or evgenia could benefit frm orsers coaching.

Eteri is a great coach but looking at her students skating skills except Alena K, their skating skills need improvement..

On the other hand most orser students have excellent skating skills and choreo.

Orser is really a good coach to make a rare jewel talent into GOAT or total package material.

I hope to see orser coaching a Russian jewel in my lifetime someday.

Yuzuru and Javi... that's it.
Doesn't really look that impressive.. when all of his others students... just below average.
and I don't think Javi is GOAT ether...

Someone posted a Russian competition on You Tube, girls 10 and under. And with all due respect, in MY opinion, the Russian girls, 'ten and under' are pretty far ahead of US skaters in the same age group. You hardly ever see a spin or jump without a transition, choreography is superior, skating skills are far more polished and so on. So really, why don't US skaters travel to Russia? Might be an idea.

Yuzuru was already pretty much a total package when he joined TCC. Yuna was one in a million talent. I can agree about Javi but behind Javi we have a lot of far less successful skaters. When Elizabet Tursynbayeva joined him many thought she would be capable of challenging raising Russian ladies but so far her best result at Worlds was 9th place. Gabby shined last year in Helsinki but otherwise her results aren't anything to talk about through many hours. Nam Nguyen and Roman Savosin left him not satisfied. I hope that Jun and Stephen will do better but I have mixed feelings about 12 yo training 4Lz (I have the same mixed feelings about Trusova).

I agree about choreo as unfortunately Eteri's camp don't do outsourcing and choreography is just not so impressive. Evgenia should try some training with jumping coach but In this case her choice is Raf not Brian.

Raf is a good jump coach? Based on Nathan Chen??

Yuzu and Javi have some of the most beautiful quads.

I think brian is a good jump coach too.

I jst wnt Zhenya and Zagitova to up their skatin skills and choreo by US style...

Why? They're better than the US girls and their style and the US girls haven't adapted to IJS the way the Russians do. If they're the best now, and they are, why would they change that?

Based on Vincent, Nathan, Alexander Abt and Adam. I don't count Michelle as in 6.0 era jumping technique wasn't as much appreciated as under IJS. Probably his worst "jumping" student is Ashley and her URs. Otherwise his students have pretty much stable technique.

As I said before: Javi is really Brian's product but Yuzuru and Yuna have their amazing skills from other coaches. And I don't think that any Brian's student (except Yuzuru) has skating skills which really stand up. Also Evgenia really improved her SS when you compare her skating 2 year ago and watch her AK step sequence. Alina also have really good edges. Eteri's students do transitions in and out every element which requires very good skating skills anyway.

I agree about choreo but Brian isn't choreographer (also maybe now with Evgenia in Korea she can talk with Misha about some choreo... i hope so)

I see this term "skating skills", bandied about a lot, often to bash Russian skaters (Sambo 70, particularly).

PCS (therefore ISU), for Medvedeva/Zagitova says otherwise.

In 10 years time Averbukh, Gleichengauz, etc. will be the choreographers people aspire to imitate - as the skaters they train hoover up 80% of the available medals

US families aren't interested in relocating to Russia for a one-in-a-million chance to go to the Olympics one day. It's as simple as that. As it is, very few are willing to relocate within the US to go to a better coach.

Maybe because there's life outside skating, and (IMO) the US is a more favourable place to live than Russia in many regards? Compared to the US, Russia is practically brutal to some of their athletes and the win-at-all-costs mentality is huge (moreso than the US). It makes Russian athletes tougher and more competitive, yes, but it also puts them physically and mentally through the ringer.... something not every parent wants to put their kid through at the cost of a gold medal (which even the hardest working Russian skaters will never get a shot at, given how saturated the field is).

I'm sorry but Vincent's jumping technique is honestly really terrible. I wouldn't wish that on anyone, let alone the Russian ladies.

BUT I do think there are some things that could be improved with coaches like Orser\Tracy Wilson regarding flow and SS. But the consistency of the Eteri ladies is honestly unbelievable.
