Nathan Chen

I think Nathan could have a photographic memory - would make the academic part easier :D

I wonder if he has a roommate during Bulldog Days - where do the students stay?

^ Yes but they’re taking one jumping pass away for this next season so it’s only 7 from now on.

Well Nathan got perfect SAT scores from just reading an SAT book so it’s possible but in general if you’re skipping grades, you’re probably at a very high IQ level lol

Nathan is just ridiculously gifted !

Seems that his math ability is super high though

Probably the SAT book was just easy review for him - maybe he hadn’t learned the topics covered on SAT math since like 7th grade :D

Yeah I actually agree with this. I think it was obvious some time between GPF and OG he lost some stability in his jump technique, and to this day we still don't know if it was injury related or if it was a combination of things. Him taking out the lutz at Nationals as well as the original plan to go for reduced difficulty int he OG SP (which he later decided against obviously) was quite telling. You could also sort of see in the way he was jumping - they didn't look as smooth as they did comapred to last year or even the beginning of the season to me.

I think he might have gotten some of the confidence back between OG and Worlds, and I'm not sure if I'm reading too much into things but I thought the lutz still didn't look as good as before (say, like at SA, where that was his money jump).

His 3A, OTOH, was looking a lot better in practices at OG (more height and spring) so I think he might have fixed the technique.

yes, kinda sure that something happened and hurt his lutz after SA. I think even during SOI shows, he only started to do 3lz in Nemesis, a couple of weeks after SOI tour started.

wasnt he having some ankle issues - that could affect his lutz?

I wasn’t aware he was doing 4lz in Nemesis at any of the SOI shows

He doesn't. Just 3z. yyy was saying he didnt' even do 3lz in Nemesis during SOI until more recently. Is it true though? I don't remember. I stopped paying attention to his jumps in Nemesis because there's too much going on

After the insanity, pressure and stress over the past season - or past 2 seasons

Can understand why Nathan chose Yale with its more isolated and beautiful campus

Mental toughness only comes from experience. No one just has it automatically so yea, he needed growing pains to get the mental strength he needs to be the greatest. People can try to help as much as possible but the person has to be able to do it themselves, they have to developed that toughness, no one can do it for them. Gracie Gold is a good example, Frank helped as much as he can but there’s only so much you can do as you watch from the sidelines. Based on Raf’s interview, I think he had similar feeling of helplessness at the OG even though he tried. Everything happened so fast for Nathan that every competition was probably nerve wrecking for him since he’s experiencing it all for the first time, many of them going in as a favorite. But he’s experienced the worst now and came back stronger rather than folding so I think he’ll be fine from now on. Failure is an annoyingly necessary evil.

haha I am sure I’m not the most super of fans

I learn so much from here! Including ‘meatless baked ziti’ at the cafeteria

If he’s not staying at a hotel - guess Nathan had to bring a sleeping bag :D

I'm pretty sure he did 3lz at SOI JP. He did not attempt any lutz jump between GPF and OLY individual event.

Lol so happy oatmella is back with her humour

aww thanks Mamamiia💕

I really enjoyed the videos you took of Nathan and thx so much for sharing them! I particularly enjoyed his ice dancing this time - he and Ashley skated well together, he looked so smooth and well l will just stop there haha

In addition to this I also think his winning streak placed added pressure on him.

Yes, I’m also one who thinks his jumps whether it’s due to injury and fatigue, they were apparently off after SA, it was evident in his GPF and then removing the lutz at the Nationals was another tell tell signs of something wasn’t working in his jumps. I do agree with heyheyhey that the media pressure and him striving for gold got to him and it’s unfortunate but understandable given it’s only his second senior season, he’s been dominating the competitions and he DOES have what it takes to win gold, so like he said, water under the bridge and I do believe he gained a great lesson that will enhance his game plan, strengthen his mental while adding a sense of calmness going into big dog games such as OG; he did transferred what he learned at the Worlds. You can see how he’s open to address the mental issue, to me, is huge, as he feels secure and confident enough to share it, verbally talking about mental toughness as seen in many athletes is quite the opposite. As for Mr. Hersh, he has always been advocating against more quads or quad revolution in plenty of his writings so will take his reporting with a filter. I don’t think the men’s have a back loading issue. For the new rule change, as this thread has previously discussed with some constructive views provided, I’m now less concern about Nathan but I do believe pushing the sport technicality is essential without sacrificing its artistry, that said, I’ve read plenty on the subjectivity of what’s enough artistry so it’s up to individual’s liking I guess. All in all, I only hope ISU isn’t going to drive more audience or fans away from the sport.

For the NBA comparison – base on Nathan’s power ranking, I think he possesses a Kobe/LBJ game mentality and more Curry personality - they all don’t talk about their mental toughness (that’s for observers to project) but confront issues and shoulder responsibilities when they fall short, like all greats do. For NFL QBs, I don’t see him as a Eli though they’re both nice but he’s more versatile and explosive on the field/rink than Eli, I see him more of a Brady/Roger type of athlete who evolve the sport and with Manning raw talent, and versatility like Roger/Wilson. *disclaimer – I’m not a Brady fan*

haha I didn’t mean to compare that Nathan and Eli are similar on the field/ice. But I think they have shared personality/character traits. Eli did win two Super Bowls and managed to be Brady’s *nemesis* though

Brady seems very obsessed with his sport (which I’m sure serves him well) - I don’t see this singular obsession at all in Nathan

And surely Nathan won’t complain about his future wife in public like Brady did this season - lol

Eli does have two rings and I like him but in terms of top QBs of all times and being consider as goat, he’s not one of them. That’s all I’m saying :) Glad my Boston friends don’t know I actually use Brady for Nathan’s comparison... in a good way. No more.

Phil Hersh tweeted this

What do you guys think?

Personally I don’t think this will help discourage any of the men to do less quads but rather do quads they’re not comfortable with and risk significant injury bc at the end of the day, quads still have the most points.

Also this does give Nathan way too much of an advantage as pointed out in the tweets as he can do 5 different types of quads pretty comfortably and he’s the only one who can. He’ll have positive GOEs in most of his jumps as he usually does and he’s not prone to falling too often or UR, he’s used to 5-6 quads now that I think this rule will make it too advantageous for him compared to the rest. I get the intention behind it but I don’t think it’ll have the intended results and doesn’t seem totally fair.

With all due respect to everyone here, IMHO if the rule about not being to repeat quads comes to pass, it will be very detrimental for Nathan, whose two best quads are toe jumps (4 toe and 4 flip). He's already had to have hip surgery. Having to maintain these very hard-on-hips jumps so that they are reliable enough to not get -5 GOE and damage his confidence, having to constantly polish up the 4 loop, 4 sal, 4 lutz would mean a LOT of wear and tear on Nathan, from what I understand of hip issues in skaters. That's the reason I never wanted to see 5 different types of quads in a program in the first place.

For someone who'll probably be getting by on minimal sleep, and may not even get much out of the residential college experience at Yale because he's always non-stop study-train-travel, this might be the straw that breaks the camel's back. Have people here considered the possibility that even if he's willing to entirely drop school to train, his body just won't survive the wear and tear until Beijing?

He's already at a disadvantage with 1 less jumping pass, because that means the 3axel will now be 1 out of 7 instead of 1 out of 8 jumping passes.

I see no reason to revel in such a proposal. In terms of accomplishments, he has enough firsts already. I would rather he be a well-rounded best all around skater, not the best at squeezing in as many quads as possible.

When will we know what the final rules *are*? Right now this is only speculation, I believe?

Here's an interesting newspaper article about Derrick Delmore, who did something very similar to what Nathan is attempting to do. Delmore grew up on the East Coast and moved to California to attend Stanford full time while maintaining a long distance relationship with his coach. His coach would fly out to California every few weeks and in between those visits he worked with a choreographer and a SS coach who were based locally.

sheetz, thank you for this Derrick Delmore article. You have an amazing ability to bring us the most pertinent reference articles. I am relieved to know there's someone in Raf's camp who has first hand experience with the challenges Nathan will be facing. Hopefully Nathan will be able to work out the logistics and not only compete well but *also* glean something memorable and valuable from his experiences in Yale's residential college system.

... if he matriculates. I don't see his signature on the commitment banner. Can anyone spot it?

truly, one of the best Nemesis performances I've seen, even though I missed the 3rd leap during the footwork sequence, and the last spin and final pose may have suffered from his exhaustion after 4 consecutive tour days.
