Yulia Lipnitskaya

2) Similarly, with regards to Yulia's anorexia, I've read comments suggesting that Eteri contributed to this, but is there actual proof of this? Like, there's a difference between a coach who makes sure her athletes are mindful of their weight, which does have an impact on skating, versus a coach who insists that her athletes target weight levels that are extreme and unhealthy.

Yulia is a class act and from articles that's been translated that I'v read has never publicly criticized Eteri, nor stated what caused the anorexia - so anyone (including myself) putting at least co-responsiblity for the Yulia's eating disorder on Eteri is doing it based interviews. The closest Yulia came to talking about it was when someone on GS translated Yulia's an interiew about her retirement where she made used a phrase saying that the anorexia had been going on for a long time.

Eteri however has said in an interview that was done either during the 2014 season or before where she praised Yulia's ability to go without food.

4) Speaking of Yulia's mom, I read somewhere that she's at least partially of Jewish descent, and has close relatives who suffered the Holocaust. Is this true? If so, I wonder if it had any influence on Yulia's choice of her famous Schindler's List "Girl In The Red Coat" program? And perhaps also her decision to seek anorexia treatment in Israel? I know publicizing your Jewish roots has never exactly been a popular thing to do in Russia, sort of like Zhenya and her Armenian roots : )

I'm not sure if Yulia has Jewish roots, but Israel has some of the best clinics for eating disorders, Julia Antipova another Russian skater went there as well for treatment. Additionally a benefit for Yulia L. was that she was probably able to be anonymous there and really heal vs. in Russia it might've gotten to the press and come out before Yulia wanted it to.

Yulia's difficulties can easily be traced to Eteri and Averbukh. There are extensive interviews from them and Yulia which speak clearly on the dynamics of their relationships. I suggest you read many interviews, google will bring them up by the dozen. Below are some of the most incisive.

This interview from Nov. 2014 covers a lot. It addresses her rejection of Averbukh's selection for 2014-15 free skate. She tried for a week, then gave up because of music (it was minimalist, she favors lyrical-expressive). Averbukh claims Yulia's mother rejected his work, interview makes clear it was Yulia who said no. Yulia also discusses the Cup of China trauma, her pre-season vacation that did nothing for her, how she and Eteri tried to salvage the free skate with Mulan etc., and the incredible suffering from skates that didn't fit. Read this to get a good insight into the post-Olympic season. http://fsrussia.ru/intervyu/451-yul...at-on-budet-luchshe-togo-chto-v-shankhae.html

Averbukh contributed to the psychological traumas. After she rejected his masterpiece he attacked her relentlessly in public, knowing full well she suffered from public scrutiny. For his take on events, read https://visaliakid.wordpress.com/2015/10/26/thoughts-on-julia-lipnitskaya-from-ilia-averbukh/ which is taken from http://www.sovsport.ru/gazeta/article-item/852769 . He gave other similar interviews after the Olympic season. Long and short of it, Ilya is interested only in clones of himself and pontificating. Incidentally, he became choreographer after most of Schindler's List was choreographed by Yulia and Eteri, but is tireless in taking full credit for its success.

Eteri went from empathy with Yulia, to complete rejection. This interview from their Days of Heaven period, 2012. http://ffkm.ru/images/mf/Figurist_2012_1-2_25-26.pdf begins on p. 18 (I can't get this to google translate, so I will add a post below with the translation). But Eteri was out of her depth with regard to Yulia's physical and psychological needs, which became increasingly evident following the Olympics. Yulia has the temperament and abilities of a uniquely creative artist. As Yulia grew older conflict with philistine Eteri was inevitable. Yulia didn't leave Eteri, she escaped Eteri--unfortunately not soon enough. This interview is mostly for an appreciation of Eteri's current mentality, approach and what she admires in skaters, but there is some mention of Yulia toward the end. https://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/th...nging-on-the-sport-results-discipline.101210/ Eteri should have managed Yulia's Cup of China podium schedule/debacle, but she did nothing. Eteri was even worse supervising Yulia's physical health. In the first part of this interview from 2012, Yulia describes skating with injuries, without the benefit of a physical exam. https://www.sports.ru/others/figure-skating/144852549.html There were interviews about multiple stress fractures, advice of two orthopedic surgeons not to continue skating, etc., all of which were ignored by both Yulia and Eteri.
Later the physical and mental merged into a confounding nightmare. https://mail.yahoo.com/d/folders/68/messages/ALTmjkQAILwaVo_a2An-mA1LiQM?reason=invalid_cred The powder diet was a big factor, it weakened Yulia so that she could no longer compete, which was overlooked due to Eteri's incompetence. Here Eteri extols Yulia's ability to starve herself (in the section "Growing Up"). https://sochi2014.rbth.com/yulia_lipnitskaya_russias_golden_girl Yulia reached 37kg, a BMI under 15--this is a serious medical condition that anyone could calculate, yet Eteri praised her and encouraged her to continue. As Yulia told us, the diet-nutrition issues went back many years and was the primary cause of her failures as a skater (after returning from Israel she said her problems were "99% health problems"). There were also tensions at the rink documented by other skaters there. Yulia wanted and needed more attention (help is probably a better word), but by then ambitious Eteri had taken on many more students so had much less time than before the Olympics when it was mostly about Yulia.

And then came Urmanov. Sadly the forces that undermined Yulia's performances were stronger than Urmanov's ability to heal.

Here is Yulia's detailed description of her life in Sochi. https://mail.yahoo.com/d/folders/68/messages/AHTsw0MAADdhVu9P5QOSEFdX7Aw?reason=invalid_cred
Here are Urmanov's interviews about Yulia, contrast with Eteri. https://mail.yahoo.com/d/folders/68/messages/AKfmjkQAAGFaVquLDgxcEFfVLLQ?reason=invalid_cred ,, https://mail.yahoo.com/d/folders/68/messages/ALTmjkQAILQxVo_XhAnEADwy6DM?reason=invalid_cred

There was no boyfriend. She had a close friendship with another female skater until that skater moved. She spent most of her time alone when not in the rink, and visited area attractioins. As her interview above tells us, she led a spartan existence in Sochi, dedicating herself to skating.

The clinic stopped her ugly downward spiral. It isn't clear why she chose Israel. Her dear friend Shelepen went to Israel eventually undergoing surgery after skating under Eteri with an injured ankle for an entire season without medical intervention, or perhaps Urmanov suggested she needed more than he could provide. Wherever it came from, it was the best possible advice. This superb interview was after her stay at the clinic. It describes how she removed herself from her milieu, and gradually unravelled complexities to find explanations for the experiences that had baffled her, and how that understanding gave her the conviction to change the direction of her life. It describes her fear of a future that isn't skating. She unequivocally states she will never be a coach (there are coaches, and then there are Coaches as she and Ilinykh are demonstrating). This interview is as impressive as it is touching. We see that her relationship with her mother is enduring, unshakable.

Her relationship with other skaters is respectful as a commentator, she wouldn't say more publicly. She is close with Radionova but schedules get in the way. There is an occasional sidelong glance in a photo or video. She has a long and close relationship with Ilinykh (which is the genesis of the Academy), and no doubt friends with Maxim Miroshkin and other Academy coaches.

The Academy is an alternative approach to developing skaters. http://fs-gossips.com/elena-ilinykh...essary-to-make-two-gold-medals-for-our-girls/ The last three questions address the Academy. Be sure to read this one. Also https://m.vk.com/wall-161698488_10 They talk a lot about trust, which takes a special context in light of the interviews above. The tenderness is palpable. https://www.instagram.com/p/Bh5vSnqD1PC/?taken-by=academy_ilinykh_lipnitskaya

The Academy doesn't have a base. Here is a recent request for cities to visit. https://www.instagram.com/p/BhveRQKjG5a/?taken-by=academy_ilinykh_lipnitskaya The Academy recently accepted a collaboration with Tver skating school https://tverisport.ru/news/tverskay...ent-s-akademiej-chempionov-ilinyh-lipnitskoj/ This will keep them in Tver more than elsewhere. Any base of operations will likely evolve out of such an agreement. They also divide the staff for master classes. This was announced today http://smi58.ru/news/sports/yunykh-...a-olimpiyskaya-chempionka-yuliya-lipnitskaya/ and https://m.vk.com/wall-161698488_402

Plans will no doubt be modified as they go forward, this has the flavor of a great experiment. Their Academy will be as unique as Yulia and Elena, they will approach with the creativity that we all admire, toward a goal of doing the most good. The Academy is only 2 months old, their progress is amazing.

Here is the translation of Eteri's interview from 2012. This is a very different Eteri, before things went sour.

Article about Julia Lipnitskaya "Pertfect skate" (February-March 2012, around the World Junior Championships) http://ffkm.ru/images/mf/Figurist_2012_1-2_25-26.pdf - page 18

"I'm not talking about Julia before the world championships," - says her coach Eteri Tutberidze by phone. "I would praise her, because it's impossible not to, and it isn't a right thing to do before important competition. Talk with Lipnitskayas, and let's postpone our conversation until after Minsk."

A conversation with Julia and Daniela Lipnitskaya began with them telling how three years ago the two of them, mother and daughter, were making difficult decision: to continue Julia's figure skating lessons or quit it altogether and start living like normal people.

At the time, Julia was the best skater in the figure skating school [in Ekaterinburg] and could do double Axel when she was 10, but on the country level, in her age group, she "had nothing to catch". "We went to Russian Cup series, and we realized that our level was far below from that of Moscow and St. Petersburg athletes, - continues Julia's mother. - So the question was, what to do next? "

But first they had to figure out where to go and to whom, so Lipnitskayas began a search of "their" coach. "At competitions, we were surreptiously watching the coaches — Julia admits. - My mother told me: look who would you like to train with? I liked Eteri Tutberidze right away, I told my mama that I would like to train with her. We then talked about her like that: look, there is ''our'' coach coming".

Eteri Georgievna learned that story after Julia began training in her group. "I remember that competition, but I had no idea that I was watched that closely by someone - smiles Eteri. - I was there with Sasha Deeva and Kamilla Gainetdinova and tried to prepare each of them for for the skate. Kamilla had to be guarded from communication, and Sasha, on the contrary, needed to communicate as much as possible. And I was trying to do it all at once, I imagine how funny that must have looked."

However, even having made the choice, Lipnitskayas didn't contact the coach at once, because they still thought, maybe it wasn't worth an effort to try to change something. But, as the saying goes, it's better to do and have a result than not to do and forever ask yourself a question "what if?" So they decided to take a chance, because, as we know, there is no harm in trying. "We did not set an appointment with Tutberidze, and when we went, we simply called the rink and asked the administrator to tell Eteri Georgievna that we were going to meet her."

Now the whole story sounds like an interesting episode from the newly crowned World Junior champion's life, but the day when Daniela Lipnitskaya was starting her car to get her daughter to Moscow, they were only sure of one thing: if Eteri Tutberidze didn't take them, they wouldn't continue their attempts, they'd simply quit figure skating. As they now both recall the two days they spent on the road, they didn't think about the future or the past, they were not afraid, they just were going to try the only chance they gave themselves.

When they had got to Moscow and found the rink, Julia went to the practice on the same day: "I remember that I was impressed with the level of skating of the group, I wanted to train there no matter what. Eteri Georgievna told me to do a double flip-double loop- double loop jump combination, I repeated it all practice and I was very tired, because I wasn't used to it." "I got her on the ice, and went to wait in the car - says Daniela Leonidovna. - On the first day, our practice, both on ice and off ice, lasted 9 hours. I was sitting in the car and thinking: what we got ourself into? "

After the conversation with the coach who said, "I take her", they had to go back home to finally pack their belongings and move to Moscow. It took a week to settle all issues with work, an apartment, a school and a cat, then two days' journey by car and after one night in Kazan, at eight p.m. they were in Moscow. "We called the apartment owner with whom we had an agreement about an apartment rent, but no one answered - wide-eyed, says Julia. - And here me and my mama sitting in a car near Auchan, it's almost midnight, and we have nowhere to go, and don't know what to do. " Lipnitskayas called several agencies and found a place to live by midnight, and the next day Julia went on the ice.

Julia Lipnitskaya started training in Eteri Tutberidze's group in March 2009. And if Julia now says that she was impressed by the group, we have to reveal that the group was equally impressed by her. First of all, by her hard work, ultra-fast learning ability, and the unique flexibility she demonstrated during her spins. By the way, she performed her spins for the first time only two weeks after she came, and the coach initially took her because of her double Axel, even though, as Julia notes, "My Axel technique wasn't that good and we spent a lot of time trying to fix it. "

In this first week, it became clear that the coach and her new student found each other. "The first week we were dying from exhaustion - says Julia's mother - because they were not used to work like that. But we all know that if Eteri Georgievna wants something from an athlete, she gets it. She started working with Julia very seriously from the first day, and Julia was doing her best at every practice, because she wanted very much to catch up with «those Muscovites»".

Eteri Tutberidze and Igor Pashkevich soon taught Lipnitskaya all the triple jumps. In the fall at the Moscow Cup in her free program she showed all the triple jumps, except maybe triple loop. "It isn't my favorite jump because I don't understand yet how I have to jump it so that it works out each time - says Julia in all seriousness. - Yes, I do it in practice, and in the programs, but I cannot fully control the trajectory of the jump. "

Julia now does in practice all possible triple jumps combinations, including the most complex triple Lutz–triple loop, but at first, she admits, she couldn't do edge jumps, such as Salchow and loop. "I was killing myself trying to do Salchow at first, because I learned to jump it the wrong way as a child. I remember how Eteri Georgievna asked me: why did you think Salchow should be done by a straight line? "

"I would never say that Eteri Tutberidze was formerly an ice dancer, not a single skater – Daniela Lipnitskaya says – because she understands jumps very well, all the minute details. She explains them so well that whoever comes to her starts doing them. "

To achieve this effect, coaches usually use the method of sparring. In this group, sparring is present in excess. "Polina Shelepen technically is a very strong skater who can jump all triple jump combinations, and if Julia has just mastered them, Polina learned them long ago. It absolutely doesn't matter for her which of triple jump combos to do, she can do them all and she has a good technique. It pushes Julia to be better, and if something doesn't work, and she sees that Polina does it, she will go and do it just out of competitive spirit, "- says the coach. Surprisingly, it did not prevent the girls from becoming friends, despite being rivals on the ice, they communicate very well in everyday life. Maybe it is because of Polina's very friendly and soft character, but at competitions the girls feel much better when they are together than by themselves. " At the Russian Cup final, when it was unclear yet if Shelepen would go to the Junior Championships or not, Julia told me: "At Worlds I'd better be with Polina, I would like to be with her," - says the coach.

Recently Eteri Georgievna with her students reminds more of a mother with daughters. "Well, they are really like daughters to me, - smiles Eteri and then continues seriously: - Sometimes, I refuse to take an athlete to the group, not because it's a bad skater, but because it isn't 'mine'. When it's 'mine', I see it with inner eye."

"Eteri Georgievna is like a self-updating program, she always comes up with something new. I am very happy to skate in her group. The only thing is, she wants my life to be only about figure skating, and I want to do many other things... "

The first on the list of 'many other things' is the desire to ride the horses that are waiting for her every summer at her grandmother's in a village near Ekaterinburg. "It's just regular horses for work - lights up Julia - but I like to ride them, and if not for the contact with Rostelecom, I would love to do it."
As a child, Julia wanted to be a veterinary to "treat animals," or a horse breeder. The question: "What about the dream of becoming a famous figure skater?" the girl answers very seriously, "You know, figure skating is such a sport where everything is so unsteady, you can never plan ahead, you have to live only by the present day. For now, I'm not going to quit figure skating, what next — we will see. "

Next on the list is the desire to travel the world and enjoy the sights of nature: "I really want to see the world, especially mountains, seas, lakes, and so on. I do not care much for architecture, but I like the nature photos from all over the world." In addition, in her spare time Julia likes to draw, especially animals, and "if I had time, I would do it all day." And she likes to make bracelets , to crochet and knit, to make clay figurines and listen to music. But out of all of the above she manages only to listen to music – Julia does it all the time, even falls asleep with headphones, but everything else only in rare leisure moments between training and school.

Like the rest of children nowadays, she takes her iPad everywhere and all day is walking around digging some interesting stuff and educational programs from the Internet. Some of these studies are related to the 7 th grade course whichJulia finished this year in school N113. "We switched to home education and take all the exams for the year at once one by one. This year we had eight, so they saw me at school exactly eight times. Physics, algebra and geometry are easier than humanitarian subjects. And from now on I am going to start studying English properly because this season I was traveling to international competitions and realized that it is necessary ", - says the girl. And also there is taboo to talk about figure skating at home, and if the mother wants her daughter to watch someone's skating videos, she has to send her a link via Vkontakte, then there is a chance she will see it . "This is a real problem to make Julia watch figure skating on TV or the Internet — Julia's mother complains. - It's good that last year the Worlds were in Moscow and she saw it at all live. "

"Who did I like? – muses Julia. - I do not know. Perhaps, most of all I liked Carolina Kostner, because her skating is very powerful and she has good height on her jumps. " The conversation reveals that she watches Patrick Chan because her coach tells her to, but he doesn't touch her soul. That she has a lot of respect for Evgeny Plushenko because of his character, and among pairs and dance teams she watches only those she knows personally, the exception is Sui - Han who do quad throw and quadruple twist.

Russian Championship last year was the occasion when Julia was not just noticed but already memorized by experts, journalists and the audience. That once again rise a question: how a child of 12 - 13 years of age can cope with all the attention and won't it lead to a star syndrome? "What's a star syndrome? - both mother and daugther are genuinely surprised and then Julia, a little confused, says: "I don't like giving interviews very much, but we have a contract with Moskomsport that regulates all our interactions with press. In general, the only way to deal with the attention is to ignore it." But journalists still attack, for example, try to compare her to Sasha Cohen. This year both of Julia's programs — short program to"Black Eyes" and free to "Romeo and Juliet" – were choreographed by Nikolai Morozov, who either accidentally or deliberately reminded everyone about Cohen's programs. The third, gala number is set to Lara Fabian's song «Je t'aime», but, according to Julia, "Dark Eyes" suits her the best of all three. As for Sasha Cohen, Julia says earnestly: "I haven't heard about her until this year, when people started comparing me to her, I didn't know her at all. I looked up her videos, but did not find anything in common."

This year, Julia participated in international competitions that began for her with junior Grand Prix where she won everything, including the final. "So far, I like to compete, - she says - and do not worry a lot before that, because we are doing a lot of run-throughs, and this is just another of the same - and that's all. "
"In my opinion, Julia is one of those people who exceed in everything they do, - says Eteri Tutberidze. - I see her character first, and then her abilities and talents. And by nature she is a fighter, not a quitter. "

Preparation for the World Junior Championships began almost immediately after the Russian Championships, where Julia Lipnitskaya placed second behind Adelina Sotnikova. Besides working on jumps, coaching team focused on the basic skating and choreography, inviting a well-known specialists Sergei Chemodanov and Ekaterina Zhurina. Seeing how Julia is concentrated on every practice, Eteri Georgievna still worried about her, because she saw the girl getting tired from successful, but very difficult season. "It happened so that since the middle of November we started competing and competed non-stop. First Grand Prix, then Grand Prix final, then the Russian championships, then Russian Cup Final and, finally,World Junior Championships - too much for a 13-year-old girl. In the last weeks before the Worlds, we made an emphasis on choreography, every gesture, and even every look. I was worried about her, because I saw she was tired, but it had shown not technically, but emotionally, because you cannot skate beautifully every day. But she managed"- summes up the coach.

If after the short program audience at the World championships applauded loudly, after the free there was a standing ovation. In Minsk, Julia Lipnitskaya left her competitors no chances in both program. Total score of 187.05 points was the best result in her first international season.

After all the congratulations, in the mixed zone, I asked Eteri Georgievna: "You came here to win, didn't you?" – she answered: "We came here for the perfect skates of the programs, and, of course, we all hoped that the perfect programs would bring us first place. I sincerely believe that Julia is such a brilliant, such an athlete that should come to competitions for the first place. And that it is my responsibility to prepare her for this result."

Schindler's List was superb. But to my eyes the following are her greatest moments.

Megapolis, test skate,
Sept. 7, 2014 https://www.youtube.com/v/0YaVfbMwtO0?start=79&end=165 This sequence combines sensitivity to the notes and shape of the music, with the white-hot emotion of one who is suffocated by urban lifestyle. The final few seconds is nostalgia for days of milk and honey. The ferocity and contrasts make this interpretation spectacular.

Leningrad, Skate America Oct. 24, 2015 1. https://www.youtube.com/v/65rRhn7cbaQ?start=25&end=55 with pure poetry she describes the pain, tenderness and helplessness of longing for a lost love
2. https://www.youtube.com/v/65rRhn7cbaQ?start=183&end=230 the dream sequence. First she walzes with her sweetheart (up to 3:18), then with a hop she leaves the earth and flies. This is glorious, but it is not to be. 3. https://www.youtube.com/v/65rRhn7cbaQ?start=227&end=287 with a wrong note she is jarred back into reality, the pain and tenderness of the opening return. Zueva was the perfect choreographer for Yulia.

This is what we lost, what the world lost, rather what was taken from us. It is heartbreaking. So imagine what she felt, how she struggled and suffered. What her mother felt trying to protect her physically, mentally, artistically. Yulia's unique creativity was lost through incompetence and narcissism of those who didn't understand the first thing about what she offered. As so often happens when true genius meets the establishment head-on, the results can be tragic. This is the cornerstone and the life-blood of the Academy, of the gentleness that we see, that is felt by every young skater who is so fortunate to be in her presence. https://www.instagram.com/p/BhqXeCkDtrc/?taken-by=academy_ilinykh_lipnitskaya

Re: Jewish ethnicity, I know she wears a cross and I believe you that she identifies as Russian Orthodox, but religious belief and ethnicity are two different things : ). I guess it's a question of whether this article is accurate. Also, you can imagine how one might want to downplay their Jewish heritage in Putin's Russia.

This was amazing to read Yulia Lipnitskaya has had such a roller coaster ride in her life and career. I hope she is enjoying life now and is in good physical and mental shape. So much of what I read is absolutely agonizing for this girl. Bless her heart.

We don't know who prescribed to her a diet with powder nutrients. But Eteri knew it and didn't do anything to stop it. She was at least responsible for her eating disorder.

Unfortunately, it was too late for Urmanov, her artistry improved in her last years, her last SP was so adorable...

I hope she can take part in exibitions, she would have a chance to do what she loves whithout pressure.

sjid: Remarkable summary ... amazing insight. Wonder if (hope) Yulia devotes some part of her life to her love of animals, in a veterinary capacity, perhaps, or advocacy, or both. But the new Academy makes so much good sense for her right now because she is so well known, admired, and well placed to mentor and guide young skaters along the right path. I was also touched she mentioned Carolina Kostner as a skater she admired since Carolina is special to me as well, having rekindled my interest in skating a while ago. Thank you for taking the time and effort to enlighten us...:thank:

OK, now I'll write, what I didn't want to write for 4 years: loving all Yulia, her skating, personality and public appearance, one thing bothered me through the years - that she doesn't give back enough to all those kids lurred into skating by her.
Some pictures with little girls here and there, but never a skating class or lesson. Being a fan of Russian figure skating boom in general, I've always felt a bit sad about this fact.
You can't imagine how happy I'm, seeing her in front of kids, presenting her maestry! :yahoo::yay:

It was a pleasure watching these. Of the current crop of Eteri girls, the one that reminds me most of Yulia is most definitely Zhenya. They both infuse their performances with such emotion and artistry, which is why I think people are so drawn to them. I don't know if Zhenya ever consciously modeled her style after Yulia, but you have to imagine Yulia was an influence.

Haven't been here for a long time since Yulia retired. So glad to see this thread is still active:laugh: Yulia looks so good on ice with the kids now! Wish she may do an ex program one day

You can tell her students feel very at ease with her.
I became a figure skating fan after Yulia's top time, and never had a clear idea of her personality, but she seems to be very kind and patient.
Am glad she's become a coach and building success in that way.

She never seems to play games with the truth. Kids appreciate that more than people think and I think she relates to them as much as they do to her. Not sure if you’ve checked out her commentating but she pulls really hard for all the skaters and you can tell she feels for those who struggle. That’s the type of coaching that can work wonders with really young and developing kids. We’ll see how far she goes with it but even if she just keeps doing clinics like this I think she’s going to help kids all over learn a little and have a very memorable experience.

She’s certainly seen the highs and lows of the sport. None higher than this.
