Isn't she already getting backlash for leaving Eteri? I acknowledge this will be far bigger, and I also don't know what "switching" means for Russians (dual or not, can become Russian again, the difference in sense of belonging/patriotism, etc.), but there have been athletes who have switched so they can compete, I think. At least in Pairs. I assume they also got backlash, but maybe Medvedeva will get a larger backlash for being a star for so long. She would need to emulate their mental strength if she needs to, assuming she feels this is the best decision for her.
I am hesitant to speculate just how many would turn their backs on her, or how much stress this would cause her, and for what duration and when.
Anyway, this is all just speculation. We don't yet know if she's switching, and this is a far weaker rumour to me at this point. As I said, I don't yet see a net gain, given how switching nationalities and the procedures for making the Olympic Team etc might work.
