Evgenia Medvedeva to train under Brian Orser

That’s why I said they have *mostly* *very good* technique.
And Brian is not Daleman’s main coach.
Tursynbaeva is very young, maybe they’ll correct that with time. I hope so.

This was a bit off topic.

Anyway, my point is
I think Brian will *at least* try to correct Medvedeva’s technique. Maybe not right away and god knows how long it will take but I believe he won’t just completely ignore the issue.

She looks young, but she's 18, which in figure skating is middle-aged for a female singles skater

Evgenia saying she wants her own voice. She was always told what music to skate to. What spin positions to do.

That's probably because she saw what happened to Lipnitskaia when she attempted to have a voice, Averbukh couldn't get to a microphone fast enough to criticize her.

The article of Orser was great to read

Orser met with Medvedeva, 18, and her mother, Zhanna Devyatova, on Sunday, April 22, at the Mayfield Hotel in Seoul. When the meeting ended, Orser realized what at first seemed unbelievable would soon become reality.

"She told me, 'I want to make a change,''' Orser said. "She didn't really give me any reasons why.

I selfishly had nostalgic feeling when I read this part. 17 year old Hanyu met Orser at a hotel in Japan, and Orser asked "why did you want to see me?" and Hanyu replied "I want to go to Toronto and practice with Brian.", and that one word was enough for Orser. (source: his book)

I really wish her the best and hope people will not jump into the conclusion with only one season if she doesn't do well

In the statement, Evgenia specifically mentioned German doctor's advice of staying away from (heavy load). It kind of implies that if she continues to work with Eteri, she will not avoid the heavy training and will risk injuring herself more. Is this one of the main reasons?

It also implies she will be training differently in Canada with at least less work load. So I think Evgenia blames her injury on Eteri's heavy training, which arguably stopped her from stopping Alina's momentum, therefore, bye Eteri.

I am just trying to understand the logic.

That maybe she thinks she can find better training for her injury in Canada with Borser could be; to say she blames Eteri for her injury is stretching IMO

You are onto something. Zhenya may blame Eteri for her injury and her understudy Alina winning olympic gold. I never even thought of these things until I knew she was leaving Eteri.

Alina needs to keep her focus in all this drama.

This is a very bold move on her part. I think that Orser's style will work for her better. Eteri has too many up and coming potential stars. Her time must be spread pretty thin. Evgenia did not burn her bridges. She was very gracious in her statement why she was making the change. I for one do not blame her. She realizes that Alina has usurped her and so she is doing something about it. Best of luck Evgenia!!

I'm very excited for Medvedeva. I'm sure this was a hard decision for her, but she made a bold choice. She clearly wants to be more than another teenage Russian champion who fades away, and she's fighting for it. I respect that a lot.

One of the reasons I like Orser is that he seems to have a lot of respect for the different personalities and approaches of each of his skaters. He never tried to make Yuzu into Javi or Javi into Yuzu or both of them into some cookie cutter skater he envisions. Instead, he worked with them on strong SS and execution, got them great choreographers and let them both be who they are. I'm excited to see what Medvedeva has to show us as an artist as well as an athlete with more room to express herself. And better choreo. lol

This will be media gold for Brian. He has two world record holders in his training camp. If Zhenya breaks another world record under the new IJS he will surely have great publicity. I am waiting eagerly for Tracy Wilson's comment too

I’m very excited to see that Evgenia was very smart about thinking forward about protecting her health and future in the sport and I’ll be waiting on the edge of my seat to see what her programs look like with more of her input incorporated!

I’d also like to make it known that until this thread, I always thought Big Spender was just a fun jazzy tune about a girl being excited that her date likes to take her to fancy expensive places :slink:

good for her for jumping over the sinking ship of Eteri. It's not a good idea to train with so many of your competitors and letting them slide past you like Alina.
I don't know if it is for the better but it's the best decision for her. Training away will let her have the opportunity to brew her own technical soup

All the hand wringing about the finances and poor ickle Russian money is seriously cracking me up something awful

I expected many things but well done, this nonsense managed to surprise me.

Zhenya will pay for Zhenya. I know some hate the idea she is successful but the young lady has two major sponsorship deals that right now, cover her needs. Add everything else and problem? What problem.
I'm new to FS and from what I understand it's an expensive sport to be in. Finances are a concern if you know next to nothing about how this world works. Thanks for the reassurance though. I'm glad she's secure. That's one more thing off my chest. :luv17:

If her PCS goes astronomically higher next season with her mouth shut and not doing that stupid thing with her hands while performing, Id say her decision was right, otherwise I see another Lipnitskaya situation here.

But maybe, just maybe, with Polina leaving as well, maybe the RusFed wanted diversity to preserve their legacy. Im sure we all agree not to see RusNat2019 become SamboNat2019 so if RusFed has a say with coaching changes, I see this as a reason why the two leaves Eteri so Eteri can concentrate on the two A's and the quad girls. And of course, the rest is drama...

Orser kind of made a copy of himself out of Javi. I guess that depends on personality, Yuzu always tried to pull his own way and did not agree on all issues with Orser, and Javi on contrary was more complying

Does there really need to be two separate threads about Evgenia's coaching change? Why can't this be combined with the previous thread about her leaving Etari? @ mods?
