That's why I used the term "perceived". The fact Vincent speaks Chinese made the difference.
TBH, I don't really understand why fans constantly compared these two skaters. They are so different except they are all Chinese Americans skaters. I can understand why non fans doing that, because it is only skating they care about. I am kind of puzzled why fans even bothered if they interacted during Olympics. They were so exhausted, why they cannot behave the way they feel comfortable with??
Nathan to me, is way more Chinese/Asian American in his core than he appears to be. As he said in his interview, he connects both to American and Chinese as an American Chinese, and he really demonstrate all the good traits of both American and Chinese.
It is really funny to judge a person's character only based on if he can speak that language or not.

That part seems to be from a Japanese documentary about Hanyu with lots of Nathan in it. Both the video and oatmella's article are about Japanese fans, which is little different. From what I know, Japanese fans have long history of idol fan culture, which are a lot more organized and there are certain spoken/unspoken rules/etiquette when approaching their idols/favorites. So
It all comes down to individual athletes.

Well they have similar backgrounds, are about the same age, have the same goals skating wise, and are competing against each other. Comparisons are natural, as long as it’s not done in a malicious way to either, I think it’s fine. They have differences in interests and personality but many similarities in background and circumstances
It is fine to compare their skating styles since they are skaters and about the same age. They are both good kids, being through lots of challenges/injuries to be where they are today. Their parents sacrificed a lot to raise them the way they are today.
But it is not what they are compared with, but rather the personality and heritage and language thing, which to me is kinda invasive, especially "perceived" personality as Skatingmusic so accurately describes it from fans who only know them by some interviews/articles/videos.

Yea I know but I think in many cases (atleast from Chinese fans but @yyyskate can correct me on that), it doesn’t seem to come from a malicious or bad intent when comparing their personalities. It’s just that fans have two Chinese Americans succeeding at the same time each with their own appeal and it seems to be done in a fun kinda way. Asian Americans are diverse and here is two examples of such, it might just be fun for some fans to point out differences (and similarities) and what makes each unique.
Some fans are rude about it though so those are ones I don’t approve of, when it’s clearly meant to demean one over the other.

Speaking of Hanyu documentary, I remember seeing one where Nathan’s five quads were shown (Nathan was shown quite a lot on this one in general iirc) and the narrator was SO dramatic about it (in a funny/cute way). Nathan and Vincent got more attention in China figure skating community, for the simplest reason, they are Chinese Americans. The immediate affiliation and association. The comparison of these two is very often among Chinese fans, like the puppy one I mentioned before, Vincent -- Golden Retriever Puppy, Nathan -- Husky Puppy. But mostly it is coming from love and for fun. and indeed many Chinese fans love them both.

Let me fill you all in a bit on Vera and her costumes for male skaters. Nathan's costumes aren't far off from the minimalist designs she used for Evan Lysacek in 2009 and 2010 and there after. Evan works for her now and had a huge part in helping design Nathan's costumes (Evan is very minimalist).
