Yuzuru Hanyu: 2017-2018

It is funny that I’m absolutely incapable of remembering when was the first time I saw him or when I became a fan 🤔
Figure Skating is non-existent in my country, no ice rinks no broadcasting of the events. I’ve started watching it since I came to Canada which was September 2011. I was a complete ignorant of the rules, different kinds of jumps and the base values. I clearly remember complaining to my sister on the phone that “how come a guy that fell during his performance became the champion?” And I clearly remember Javier's yellow costume and again complaining to my sister that "there is this fantastic Spanish skater that judges keep low". However, there is not even one image of Yuzu in my mind from WC 2012 :palmf: And, it was the time that he roared to FS worlds 😥

I think I know what you mean. I don't remember the first time I saw him either, even though I am sure I had seen him before GPF 2011 because I had kept watching FS on TV for a long time.

Good to know that I'm not alone

Well, I became a fan with H&L 2017W, and then backtracked and R&J 2012W surpassed it for me. The first is a very beautiful contemplative performance, and the second is just a mix of vulnerability and intensity, which made it more complex for me. 2012W is ahead also because 2017W didn't always have the best movement from him -- his performance was focused and solemn, but (and it was the same with Yuna when she was with Orser) sometimes the movement had a little too much flair.

I feel the same. R&J 1.0 at Nice was something else totally, it might have been influenced by the circumstances at the time, with the earthquake and all. I would even call it the performance of his life, despite many high-scoring and wonderful programmes after. He became the perfect Romeo at 17 - I don't think even Yuzu himself could replicate that.

(Also, it's the reason why I think R&J should only be done by teenagers - it doesn't feel the same when adults do it) :p

It's his best artistic performance. I would say nothing's really matched since. It's why I hope he overhauls his artistic approach this season, and does something out of the ordinary for him.

He probably can't replicate it any longer. I said the same when he did it in CiONTU. The rawness is gone. It's fine, though.

No, I think an adult could play a good Romeo, for sure. It would be a nice reconstruction of a role - from a scrappy teenager, to a steadfast adult.

I think I've only liked his R&J1 and H&L programmes for the longs.

LGC was good because he was able to perform with ease, but it never really lived up to its potential because of the quad focus. Killer StSq, though, and it played on his natural instincts at times which made it work well. Don't want him to repeat it, however. Chopin was alright, carried off more because of his polish at points. Some parts were good, though.

:otopic: Maybe because I did R&J for two whole years in high school (one year and a half too long TBH), but I can't see Romeo or Juliet as anything remotely adult-like. That's what makes the whole thing special I think; for R&J it was 'everything or nothing', there's no in between for them. "These violent delights have violent ends" fits them to a T, and while I like the concept of reconstruction, I just don't see it for R&J. Would love to see skaters try to change my mind though :agree:

Yuzu should totally bring LGC back in exhibition - forget the dumb quads (and I say this as a big supporter of his brilliant jumping) and just go off.:yahoo:

Anyone have the video link for the Drama documentary on 25th May for NTV with actors acting Yuzuru's injury period?

The first time I saw his skating was at a gala event on TV. He wore a hat and tie, was very expressive even that time (not sure in what year or competition, perhaps JP Nationals or NHK?).

I remember it because I wondered why a child skater was in the competition's gala:scratch2:, and said to my family "This little kid can dance, he's already much better than those adult Japanese male skaters! (sorry, but I was Russian or European skaters' fan then:laugh:)".

Honestly I didn't become his fan from that point though (he looked so young--just "a kid"--even by Asian standard), anyway I know his name since then:).

The retweets on twitter are on fire.

Yuzuru Hanyu for #ChoiceMaleAthlete for #TeenChoiceAwards

Really excited because it seems he is the most nominated male athlete on twitter at the moment

While I find the TeenChoiceAwards so silly, I am pleasantly shocked and excited to think that he can generate that type of interest in a N. American outlet over the more hyped American athletes with literally zero effort in marketing himself over here.

I am quite shocked myself. Maybe he just has that fanbase power like how BTS for famous in NA with little marketing
