The Rinks is scheduled to open a facility at the Great Park in Irvine on Nov. 1. It will have three NHL-sized rinks, an Olympic-sized rink, and seating for 2,500. "We're owned by the Ducks so everybody looks at us as a hockey business," Trottier said, "but figure skating is also a very big part of our business and something we'd like to help grow, also."

Scheduled to open in July 2018, the Great Park Ice & Sports Complex will feature four ice sheets, including one that could seat up to 2,500 spectators. The 280,000-square-foot complex will offer a variety of ice sports including youth and adult hockey programs, tournaments, figure skating, curling, broomball, sled hockey, public open skating and will be used as a practice facility for the Anaheim Ducks.
Local coaches and players are hoping the project will help alleviate the shortage of ice sports facilities in the area. While the popularity of ice hockey has grown over the past 25 years in Orange County and the area has become a destination for top figure skaters, infrastructure hasn’t kept up with the pace.
The county hasn’t had a new ice facility built in nearly 20 years, said Art Trottier, vice president of the Anaheim Ducks RINKS, which operates four ice facilities in Southern California. The RINKS Learn to Play programs, which offers first-time hockey players the chance to get on the rink in full equipment for free, has a six-month waiting list.

Henry and Susan Samueli, owners of the Anaheim Ducks NHL hockey team, are the major benefactors of the $100 million facility through the nonprofit Irvine Ice Foundation. The facility will be operated under a 50-year lease with the city, with the option for a 50-year extension. After the lease is up the facility will revert to city ownership for $10.
“We are excited to have FivePoint as a partner of the brand new state-of-the-art ice and sports complex in the Irvine Great Park,” said Michael Schulman, chief executive officer of the Anaheim Ducks.
“FivePoint has been an essential part of the development of the Great Park and continues to support community assets that have established the area as a destination for recreation and sports. Ice hockey participation in Orange County, including youth, high school and adult, has seen exponential growth in just the past few years and we are happy to provide new resources that will help meet the growing need for ice time in the area,” Schulman said.

The facility will also give the ever-growing Anaheim Ducks High School Hockey League (now up to 48 teams) an appropriate location to host highly attended games as well as highly anticipated figure skating competitions and other events that require additional seating. In addition, the $100 million plus facility will be LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver certified as part of the NHL Green initiative.
"This is a great day for the city," said Irvine mayor Donald Wagner. "We're going to have four sheets of ice, one of the largest facilities in the country, and we're going to have the opportunity for our local kids to come play hockey, figure skate and train with the best. This is a first-class operation, a thoroughly professional operation, and it's going to be a community icon. I'm excited."
