Proposal to raise minimum age rejected

I saw that earlier today. I just hope they publish who voted for and against it

I hope they do too, so I can congratulate the brave members who voted *in favor of* the proposal to raise the age:bow:

And see exactly which scared representatives thought they couldn’t compete without 15 year olds and voted against:devil:

ETA: sorry, went through this too fast and didn't see the countries listed.

Proud of those countries that put health before medals:agree:

I could be wrong - but I don't think they voted that way for health reasons.

The votes in favor were only votes in favor of including the proposal in the Congress agenda this week/year.

It's possible that some of those voting in favor did not know which side of the actual issue they intended to come down on and wanted a full discussion before making up their minds.

But the proposal made no mention of health. It just talked about idols and such.

I don't think anything suggests towards the proposal having any impact on skater health nor is there any evidence to support such a claim(Which never was made by the Netherlands when they made the proposal, indeed).

By the way, these countries didn't vote to "agree with the proposal.". This voting was on whether they wanted it to even be discussed. It's a different thing.

Votes in favour to keep the Age Limit urgent motion on the agenda:

Andorra Figure
Armenia Figure
Iceland Figure
Indonesia
Kyrgyz Rep Figure
Liechtestein Figure
Luxemburg Figure
Malaysia
Mexico Figure
Morocco Figure
Philippines
Qatar Speed
Singapore
South Africa Figure
Turkey
UAE Figure

It's funny that those quoted countries have votes regarding figure skating.

Excuse me, is figure skating even allowed in countries like Qatar or UAE?

You are right; I was importing my reasons for supporting the proposal onto the proposal itself.

The fact that countries voted against even bringing it up for discussion makes it worse, in my book: what are they so afraid of that it cannot even be discussed?

I do think, whether one is for or against and whatever the reasons, that previous posters are right: the proposal will be brought up again. And maybe this time health reasons will be highlighted:)

UAE, yes. There has been an International Event in Abu Dhabi in 2016-2017-2018 but it is not in 2018/19 calendar IIRC. They have a skater Zahra Lari who competed internationally (Golden Bear, Cup of Tyrol, FBMA Trophy and Bavarian Open in 2017/18). She can't get the minimum TES for 4 Continents.

Qatar is only a Speed Skating Member.

On the others listed, Malaysia (man), Philippines (man) and Turkey (Ice Dance) were at Olympics. Mexico (Men) and Armenia (Men, Ice Dance) were at Worlds this year along with Turkey (Men and Ice Dance) and Malaysia (Men)

Other than being automatically and bureaucratically assigned as "members" can they skate?

I was hoping they would raise it to 40 and my glorious reign as world and Olympic champion could begin.

Malaysian (Yee), Mexican (Carillo) and Armenian (Hayrapetyan) men all made the FS in Milan. In the FS they outscored Boyang, obvisouly. Turkish Ice Dancers made the FS both in PyeongChang and Milan.
Turkish man (Demirboga) qualified fpr the FS at Euros this year along with the Armenian skater (always Hayrapetyan). Armenia ice dancers made the FS at Euros.

Thanks! I think I have just become a fan of Malaysian figure skating... :)

The "members" of the ISU are the federations. Federations don't skate, although many of the individuals involved in running them often do. The member federations each have person representing them at the ISU Congress. Some of the representatives are former elite skaters, some less successful skaters, some perhaps just got involved in their federation as parents or in other capacities before volunteering to fill bureaucratic needs of their federations.

The federations Andrea82 listed as having skaters at Olympics and Worlds this year obviously have at least one skater or team who can skate well enough to qualify for Olympics/Worlds.

But those current athletes are not the individuals representing their federations at the ISU Congress.

You never read the proposal at all, did you?

NOWHERE in the proposal did it say ANYTHING about skaters' health. It only carried on with rubbish about idols and women being afraid and factually incorrect statements about age limits. There was no justification for the selection of 17 and how it was in any way better than what we have now, no studies or research provided, just garbage.

It still cracks me up.

They really thought people would take it seriously and pass it. Really. I could have written a better proposal in 8th grade. Google scholar search for the win!

And no one ever ever ever ever votes for a proposal for reasons that are not outlined in the proposal?;) But I have already said I was conflating my reasons for supporting it with what was actually written, and that was my mistake.

And I hope that the proponents take this and using the research that *is* out there (and having looked it up and posted it once, wherever I posted it, that's the extent of my work) craft a better proposal.

And that delegates aren't so scared of a proposal that might actually lengthen the career of young skaters that they let it go to a vote. I said it one screen ago, I'll say it again, if you're a great skater at 15, you'll be a great skater at 17. If not, no greatness there.:noshake: But to debate that, we need to get past the folks who are too scared to even talk about it:dumb:

So, why was this proposal that's pertaining to figure skating and not speed skating submitted by the Dutch fed?
