OT: I'm glad Conrad didn't manage to take out poor Joseph in their sbs attempts today [emoji23] Glad they were both watching out for each other, but I imagine Lee and/or Ghislain (if they witnessed this) was :palmf:

Not off-topic at at...

And worth discussing a bit here...as this probably is not just playing around, but more of a training approach.

While it is a fun way to end a week of training, there is a school of coaching thought that views side by side jumps as a way to improve the rhythm, timing and consistency of jumps in freeskate.

And the more a consistent they are in practicing the elements, the more likely skaters are to hit the elements correctly in competition.

Not sure which attempt you were looking at, but this one posted by Conrad looked fine to me... and 4 times to get the timing right is actually pretty quick given that they've come to TCC from different training programs

BTW We haven't seen so much of this at TCC, but when Conrad was at YRSA we saw him doing SBS jumps with Nam and Matthew Markell at the same time.

I was just looking at old worlds results and a Canadian has stood at the top of the podium in at least one discipline since 2015. Also with the exception of 2014 there has been a Canadain winning at least one discipline since 2010!

Could of had 2014 as well with 0.03 more points, albeit happy for both C/L and W/P since they skated lights out in both SD and FD.

Heh, I was doing some country comparisons too recently. Since Buttle's win in 2008 (which was the first Worlds win for a Canadian in five years, since Bourne & Kraatz in 2003), Canada has won 10 World titles in 11 years, by far the most of any country, and skipping only two years in that period (2009 and 2014, in both cases with a Canadian silver medalist).

After Canada's 10 wins in that period, you have Japan with 7 (Canada matches Japan with 7 in a "two best disciplines" comparison, in our case it's men's and ice dance), Germany with 6 (you could sub "Aljona Savchenko" for "Germany", since she accounts for all of those wins; Germany relatedly also takes the prize for most wins in a single discipline), and Russia with 5 (their win regularity has obviously improved a lot recently due to their women's program, which accounts for 3 of those 5 wins, all over the preceding quad).

Canada's history at Worlds is fairly heavily concentrated in three periods: 1954-1965 (10 wins in 11 years) and 1984-2003 (12 wins in 18 years). There are three other wins (Scott in 1947-48 and Magnussen in 1973) that are kind of outliers, more than a quad removed from a previous or subsequent win.

So yeah, you could easily argue we've just been living through a golden age of Canadian skating, maybe even the best, in terms of diversity, since in the previous eras we never won all four disciplines at least once. Right now I think it's likely to be a couple of years before another Canadian takes World gold, so this might be the end of that particular era.

^^ Thanks Colonel Green. If you had told me 10 years ago, if I thought there was a possibility that a women from Newfoundland & Labrador (a Canadian province not known for figure skating supremacy) would become a World Champion, and an Olympic Gold, Silver & Bronze medalist, while being ranked no. 1 in ISU World standings, I would have said that you were crazy!

Yes, the Golden Age of Canadian skating indeed, and what a ride it has been.

As excited as I am for the years ahead, I'm going to also feel a lot of sadness when the new National Team members are named for 2018-2019 and there's no Virtue & Moir, no Patrick Chan, no Duhamel & Radford. Truly an incredible generation of skaters indeed. (And speaking of that incredible generation, is Kaetlyn Osmond likely to be named to the National Team with taking the GP off and beyond that unclear?)

I'm historically curious: Barbara Wagner and Robert Paul won four consecutive World titles (1957-1960) PLUS Olympic Gold in 1960. And yet, I feel as though they've all but disappeared from public Canadian consciousness. Barbara Ann Scott remains a household name. Heck, I even knew who Donald Jackson was as a kid. Wagner/Paul are ridiculously decorated as Canadian athletes; second only to Virtue/Moir in skating accomplishment. Anyone have any insight into why there seems to be so little appreciation for/knowledge of them? :scratch2:

If Kaetlyn decides to come back for the second half of the season, they'll put her on the national team no questions asked.

She's already earned her spot for this season, placement at Nationals will determine next season...but her world championship status will smooth the way for funding based on Sport Canada criteria.

The only one who I'm not sure if he's on the National Team or not is Nicolas Nadeau. I had guessed he'd be there because of the retirements but Kevin stayed in. So we have Keegan, Nam, Joseph, Kevin, and Roman occupying the 5 National Team spots ahead of Nic. Maybe they'll take on a 6th guy?

Joseph is still junior though so Nic should still have his spot

If things go well, Stephen and Marjorie/Zach will wrap up their finals spots by September 15 and then have a two-and-a-half month wait for the JGP Final.
And this is the benefit of being both NextGen and former national Junior Champions.

Congrats to everyone on their assignments!

Should I assume that Aurora and Stephen won't be at the GTA Summer Skate, since it's the week before Bratislava?

I am not sure it works like that. Roman was a junior and on the National team in 2015-16 because he was 4th at 2015 Nationals. Here's a news release with that: https://skatecanada.ca/2015/07/skate-canada-announces-2015-2016-national-team/

Hoping that is the case! The fed put up an article with info and a Photoshopped pic with L/L

Yup they won't be there. Not enough time to travel and recover.
