Kwan always wanted to skate at Nationals (if she was physically able) and Worlds, there was never any question of that. It was the GP and future Olympics that she was unwilling to commit to. In both cases, her hip injury was very likely the reason why she wouldn't commit.

But why didn't she just come out and SAY it. Good lord, it couldn't have been that hard. But I'm rehashing the past and now I'll stop.

Looks like I'll have the same beef with Cohen. Like I said already I will assume she's not going to be there unless she makes an announcement to the contrary.
 
I think Kwan was basing it on her serious hip injury. Cohen is basing it on an acting career. I hope her career takes off soon because her silver medal popularity will only take her so far, just ask OGM Tara Lipinski. Her OGM didn't catapult her into Hollywood stardom.

:yes: but I think Cohen has one thing working in her favor that Tara didn't, and that's her looks. I also think she'll have no problem scoring cameo roles in films that involve ice skaters. But as to whether she'll be the next Julia Roberts, I doubt it. :cool:
 
Tara was an awful actress, right from the get-go. I suspect that Sasha is better in that department and yes, she is also very pretty while Tara was just average-looking, and Tara still looked like a 14-year-old when she was 20. Sasha may not be voluptuous, but she doesn't look like a teenybopper.
 
You know, to this day I STILL haven't seen Sasha act. So I will hold judgement on that. But yes, Tara wasn't the best. Also, I think she stunted her growth by choosing to refuse skating roles. I would think Cohen would be open to those and who knows, maybe it would lead to a big non-skating role.

Also, isn't she in some movie already? Has it come out yet? That would be the best avenue for evaluating her acting "talent", if she has any.
 
Well, to me it sounds like Nats is still a possibility, according to this interview:
If Cohen does compete at nationals, she'll have to raise the difficulty of her routine from two jumps to seven for her free skate.

"I remember where I was in this event last year and I was not in good shape," Cohen said. "I was just making new programs, I was injured. And I got ready within a month. So I know how to get ready, that's not a problem."

The 2007 national championships will take place Jan. 21-28 in Spokane, Wash., and Cohen said she planned to decide soon on whether to attend.

But at this event last year, Sasha had a new FS and had already skated it once at TEB, where she won a silver medal. That is no comparison to where she is this year, with no new programs and no hard-core competition under her belt. And if I recall correctly, she skated quite decently at Marshall's last year, using a shortened "R&J", but lost to Michelle Kwan, even though clearly Sasha had skated better than the ailing Michelle.

Sasha was also heavily into training for the Olympics last year under the guidance of John Nicks. She has no coach at the moment, and trains when she can, but not the way she was training last year.

Not the same situation at all. Right now, Sasha is about at the stage where she might have been in SEPTEMBER last year, getting ready for Campbell's, not December. And in September, she had a good 4 months to get ready for Nationals. Right now, she has exactly 6 weeks.
 
My opinion of Sasha as of the Marshall's cheesefest popularity contest? She should retire from skating ASAP. Her best days are far behind her. She was SOOOOOO unbelieveably slow and cautious and put out the absolute easiest programs of any skater at the competition. I wouldn't have put her any higher than third just in the West Coast portion! And that is only because Katy struggled with her jumps. If Katy had landed clean jumps I'd have had her ahead of Cohen, too. Sasha's spins were nowhere near where they used to be, very very slow, and even her trademark spirals were wobbly and even slower than usual. There's almost no way she can go out and skate a clean 6 or 7 triple LP in January. WSS was DULL DULL DULL, the dress had nothing to do with most of the music and there was no real skating, a lot of posing and 'fluffy" moves. I know it was more of a show program, but it was so empty and pathetic. Someone stick a fork in the girl, she's done.
 
Katy fell on the 3F, but she did land a 2A and a 3Z2T combo. That sure beats a doublefooted salchow and a 2A.

Jaana, I thought Sasha did a wonderful job too. She is just exquisite in her positions. I thoroughly enjoyed her performances today. I am not as sure as everyone else is about Nationals, I only hope she goes but if she doesn't it's her choice. I loved her WSS costume.

I attended Marshall's today and was throughly entertained. As far as I was concerned this was not a competition but entertainment and I really did not pay much attention to the technical aspect of the programs.. I had great seats (second row) and I could see the skaters up close and personal.

Johnny Weir shone today I was really impressed and he should have won. The audience loved both of his programs. I/B was another audience pleaser good job. Luke warm responses from the audience to Katy and B/A. I don't think that the audience got B/A at all or it could be they are not into ice dancing. I thought they were great. Emily's program was o.k, lots of energy she had a lot of fans rooting for her. I was not crazy about Evan's program it was well executed but seemed a little blah to me. Kimmie's did some good jumps but as far as her programs being entertaining and fun they were not for me.

Sasha, Sasha, Sasha - When she took the ice to perform WSS of course
she got a huge response from the audience and the friend who I was with who is a sometime fan of figure skating turned and said to me there is no comparison she is in a different class than the other ladies here this afternoon and I have to agree. I don't care if she two footed her jumps she was really quite beautiful on the ice today. She did not look slow or tentative at all to me. Sasha skated her heart out in GBA and brought the house down. I don't think I haver ever seen that much passion in her skating before.

Overall a fun afternoon of show skating.

I bet Johnny will still be the most popular male skater in US even if he loses to Evan at the Nationals. I thought Evan's program was beautiful, and with more emotions than before. He should have gone to the second level. But he only got 18% votes.

To me, without Sasha, the ladies events at the Nationals will be so boring.
