Nathan Chen

I thought he already had a signature style, starting with his self-choreographed 'Dream on' program. He continued in the same vein with 'Stole the show' and 'Back from the edge.' When left to his own devices, this is where he grativates.

I should clarify. His self choreography is nice, but I think the choreographers have elevated and translated his ideas into a signature style. That's no disrespect to Nathan. He's smart to work with people who understand his vision.

shine, we all want Nathan to shine like a diamond, but we don’t want you to be DEAD. It is such a joy to read your post. You need to keep writing!
My silly attempt at pretending to be a gen z...or maybe I should've said DED instead? Sorry can't help it when the subject is Nathan  But I can replace DEAD with ecstatic, madly overjoyed, incredibly thrilled etc etc :)

I'm of two minds about Caravan. It's a little too frantic for me. It's not that it's too burlesque and rowdy. It's just that not every note of music needs a movement. The clapping could go--I wouldn't miss it. This mile-a-minute program can deplete his energy and make it hard to land quads, especially if the last jump is a quad lutz preceded by steps.

Will a person trying to compete while a full-time college student, probably getting less sleep than last season, have the energy to get through this gauntlet? Also, when the jumps fail, because no one is perfect, it will take a special skater to convincingly grin like a maniac, like he's still dancing on the table at Romain's bachelor party, all the way through the end of the program.

On the other hand, it's nice to see him having so much fun in the show version. And maybe if the jumps fail, it's this music that will still carry him forward and lift his mood. Maybe if he can keep the spirit of here-goes-nothing no matter what, this same program will entertain the audience even if the jumps don't go well. Maybe this music will even help him remember his advice to his younger self in that lion-king flashback: enjoy skating while you still can.

(... or it could drive him and his rinkmates up the wall after several months.)

High risk high reward. So very Nathan. :)

I'd still rather watch an incomplete version of the FS than this finished (sans quads) SP. Less is more. the FS may be unfinished, but the destination it's heading for is worth my wait. I enjoy the view along the way. ;)

Whole post

I think all of these concerns are valid. This is the season to go crazy though. He'll never have this much energy and less pressure so let's see how it plays out. Michelle Kwan was self aware enough to realize that school had to be on the back burner for a while after she tried to do both. He'll soon see just how difficult it is to pull off and hopefully make necessary adjustments.

I teach so I don't say this lightly, but there's really no rush on school. I hope he knows his limits.

I'm probably one of the few who loved the Fanfare Ciocarlia music when we first heard it was going to be his SP. I really like the the jazzy/funky brass sounds, the gypsy soudning vocal and the slightly dated vibe it has.

I also think Nathan somehow manages to strike a good balance between too much and not enough energy with this SP. In the past I have felt his fast paced programs could be too busy and cluttered. Examples of that for me would be Parachute and BFTE. Among the constant movement all the moves were done at about the same pace; no moves were held and no meaningful pauses were taken - there were no "moments" that made me want to watch over and over. I know many here liked BFTE particularly because of the lyrics and what it meant for him to skate to in the post Olympic tours, but I could never really warm up to it because of how constantly busy it was. But I don't feel that way with Caravan: despite the fast tempo there are moves which are intentionally more dragged out than others in order to make the choreo look meaningful, as well as clever pauses which fit the music and gave the program character; not all moves were done at the max intensity level like they were in Parachute or BFTE which made the program appear monotonous. The only move that made me think it was too much was probably the half spread eagle he did right after the first spread eagle in the stsq - I think he also did this in BFTE. I thought it not only added nothing to the program musically but also took away from the effect that first spread eagle had.

I really like the feeling of spontaneity and being off-kilter in Caravan. Yeah, it will be a seriously challenging program once the quads are added in and second half quad lutz out of steps ... hoping he can do it :)

Was Nathan in the front with Mariah? Isn't that Romain's seat? ;) He's giving me Kyoto rickshaw flashbacks, getting too used to third-wheeling.

Some Caravan gifs you might have seen before from one of the Nathan gif masters.

The freeze frames look like Nathan's in a state of ecstasy. You can't help wanting to join in the fun.
