2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

They don't address or mention her otherwise than Eteri Georgievna.

It was a joke post, I don‘t believe Sasha would talk to Eteri like this, or that she‘d actually jump 15 4S, so... If I‘m actually exaggerating, I‘ll do it big time! ;)

But thank you for the correction anyway. I noticed that Russian skaters often used two names to describe a coach in interviews but I‘m not really familiar with Russian name traditions other than the diminutives with which I‘ve had (and still have) actually quite the hard time. I mean.. Sofia to Sonya? That‘s not even an abbreviation, it has the same number of letters! But I‘m trying to learn so thanks for pointing this out for me. :)

Shcherbakova's FS is my second least favourite program
I can't believe. I'm just shocked.
How is that even possible, man? And all of a sudden.....
I would never have guessed that. ⋋| ◉ ͟ʖ ◉ |⋌

Well, to be fair, I like Anna‘s SP much more, too. I just feel like I can connect to it so well and like she connects to the music and audience a lot more, too. With the FS... not so much. :slink: It‘s just because I‘m generally a big fan of her and her skating that I get to enjoy it. So if somebody doesn‘t like her as much we do, I can see why they would not like it that much.

it's not about "like it or not"
It's about who said it. Some users here will never change.
Every year it's exactly the same deal. it's really funny.

Haha...some people love to spread the negative vibe.

Use your ignore feature folks

Seems like you are NOT a fan of pairs or dance where girls look much more mature that their actual age
Well I am a fan so I like Anna's FS too

You do you! Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. However, I never said I disliked Anna's FS. My comment was about trying to make a young girl look "womanly" and not about her program at all.

I prefer Anna S's SP but that has nothing to do with her dresses (I try to keep my opinion of what the skater does separate from what they wear). I think the choreography of the SP has a better flow, suits her style, and feels a little less busy than the free. The long program is so jam packed with content that I don't feel as though any of the moments in it have room to breathe, allowing her natural grace and fluidity to really shine. It's not a bad program...I just don't think it's the better of the two.

But again, that's MY opinion. It doesn't need to be yours. And that's okay.

I know. :) I wouldn't be so sure about 15 quads though...

Moreover, the name Sergey is usually 'abbreviated' to Seryozha, which may have the same number of letters in Russian, but it has more syllables and more complex to pronounce.

As for patronyms, I think Daniil for now is exactly on the borderline - Alenka has mentioned that some students call him Danya, while others (younger ones, I presume) call him Daniil Markovich.

I have a feeling that the Russian ladies will go 1-2 at every jgp competition. They are SO STRONG. And so beloved by the judges. And so consistent. There is no stopping them.
And by junior worlds they’ll sweep the podium like in the Elena Radionova years.

I’m also new to Russia culture and traditions so please correct me if I’m wrong. But from what I understand this way of address is more formal and a term of respect especially for teachers. Using her first name and patronymic name (I think that’s what it’s called) instead of just her first name or her actual surname. I looked it up once after being very confused why some refer to her as Eteri Tuberitze and others Eteri Georgievna.

So my understanding from the poster was that this was also a joke. That the kids wouldn’t dare use the informal first name only format to address Eteri.

I agree with you very much. I am late to the convo, but I just finished watching the replay of the ladies free skate, and while the right young lady won, I did not think the long program was suited well to Anna at all. She is light, airy, and almost ethereal - the music (and choreography) were too heavy and full of “let’s get more points” moments IMO, and didn’t have nearly the fluidity or grace of her short program. I will NOT mention the dress. I will not, I will not, I will not, lol!

It's similar to Japanese language honorifics -san or -sama - in Russian there are varying degrees of politeness too. Calling someone by name only can be too familiar while calling by surname only can be rude.

Yep, you is right about it.

No question that the FS is not suited for her; she is not at the level yet to interpret Rondo Capriccioso. I didn't bother rewatching that program. Daniil's choreography is full of those get point moments. It could contain a dozen of bad POTO cuts or this iconic piece of music, it's not important as the music is just exploited to place elements. Just leaves the audience cold.

That's the point - you need to learn and practice both technical and artistic aspects of figure skating before you move to seniors.

People often refer to her as Eteri the same way they refer to others by their surnames (Orser, Plushenko, etc), it's just that "Tutberidze" sounds copmlex for a non-Georgian, while her name isn't too widespread. Likewise, Dante's given name is much more recognizable than his surname. I wouldn't be surprised if there are only two people in the world who actually address to Eteri personally as Eteri - her mom and TAT.

I don't quite agree with this.

I remember last year FS fans tried to move the goalpost about Alina's Don Quixote not being entertaining despite i've always heard people clapping and getting excited especially about her second half or the choreo sequence at the beginning of the program. Even here people were clapping at Anna's Rondo. Last year program was better i do agree but that was also a great program in general, arguagbly one of his best.

Most importantly PCS are always good, so there is no incentivize for Eteri to change choreographer and i do also believe she also helps him making these programs, if oyu watch her programs are not that different.

The program is nice (Rondo is always a difficult piece for all skaters, she did well for the most part), personally the only thing is that i'd place the steps sequence here instead of the spin, cause the music is slower, she can get it

https://youtu.be/rmFSpxEZfNw?t=161

Instead of here where it is too big for her

https://youtu.be/rmFSpxEZfNw?t=184

Still a better Rondo than Mai's Rondo (half of the program are crossovers with no choreography) or Adelina's first Rondo (no choreography at all)

I think it's quite disrespectful in Russia for pupils not to address their teachers by their patronymics. It's like adding "-sensei" in Japan when addressing your teacher.

I'm more excited about Russian Nationals than for GPF this season!

Anna, Alena K, Alina, Zhenya, Trusova all in the last group at Russian Nationals competing for the podium will be the toughest bloodbath of the season!!

Imho, the choreography of her FS sucks, but what a star regardless. Girl has quads but is like, nah, no need to unleash that yet on this field of plebs. What a queen.

The only fault I find in Anna's skating is the lead-in to her jumps. Not the jumps themselves, which are pretty tight, if not as electric as Sasha's. But when she's getting ready to jump, she does this inelegant wind-up that seems so awkward and labored, especially relative to the gracefulness of the rest of her skating.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about? It may be that because she doesn't have the athleticism and power of Sasha, she needs to do this in order to generate that extra bit of energy. I'd like to see her overcome it, though.

That aside, what a special skater and what a special season we have ahead of us. The Russian Championship in December is going to be historic. I hope there will be a way to watch it here in the States.

Yes.
