Evgenia Medvedeva

One fix to her flip that would help with fixing her Lutz as well is to make the edge more shallow. If the flip edge's so deep it might be tough to not do the Lutz similarly, but if the Flip edge is shallow then adjusting for a Lutz doesn't require so much.

I myself really doubt they're trying to remake the entire technique. That'd take too long, she needs to actually qualify for international competitions and all. She can't afford to not have functional jumps for a lot of the season. She doesn't have such luxury. This is one of the reasons I don't think complete tech overhauls will be happening. Also, Tursynbaeva, Daleman didn't get such tech overhauls and Gogolev doesn't jump with classic tech either.

Yeah I also find it weird that the Russian fed told her to ‘go have babies’ and then they’re helping fund for Orser? Unless they’re not? Tbh no one other than zhenya really knows what’s going on so we should stick to hearing from her personally!

Yes, I agree and I don't think they will completely rework her technique either mostly bc they don't have that much time. They could however make some small adjustments though to both flip and lutz, while not touching her edge jumps at all.

well maria sotskova has a really deep edge on flip but her lz edge is correct too.

TSL is just not good. It's just not, I'm sorry. Brian had already said they would work on getting her healthy again and correcting her lutz. Why would they be helping her with the flip? It is correct already. Makes no sense. As for their "source", I do not think it's true. They're known for saying dumb stuff and making up rumors.
Her flip is good at takeoff, and she rotate it completely and very quickly, but the truth is that it is still small compared to her edge jumps that tend to have better height and decent distance. Her flip has very little ice cover, and from what we know of Orser, his main tactics are not always a decomunal BV, but to maximize the value of the jump aiming at better quality, that is, + GOE, now the rules specify to have good height and distance and that is what they are looking for. This worked very well with Javier Fernandez, he didn't have many quad types in his layout, but he improved the quality of his jumps, especially his quad Salchow, aiming for a better GOE and thus increase his TES.
For me it makes a lot of sense, and as @yoloaxel says, the Flip and Lutz are toejumps, this will definitely help her improve her toepick when taking off in both jumps, and control some excessive pre-rotation.

Yes, exactly. Her flip isn't awful, but there's room from improvement. Besides, improving her flip might help with the Lutz as it'll make easier to differentiate the jumps

That baby thing sounds like fake anti-Russian nonsense to me. I wouldn't be shocked beyond all shock if they really did say it, because there are people everywhere who think that women should be barefoot and pregnant, but it sounds more like a made-up stab at how backwards/unequal/whatever people think Russia is.

Excuse me if this is a proverb I don‘t know and but barefoot? As in, not wearing shoes? What does this have to do with pregnancy?

Yeah, I have no idea where it actually comes from. "Barefoot and pregnant" is a (perhaps old-fashioned?) English proverb referring to women being powerless housewives who just do housework and have babies. It's used ironically to mock people who think women should be like that.

My thought is that we should be looking at the season by season incremental improvements that were made on Javier Fernandez' jumps.

While he wasn't at Zhenya's level when he came to TCC, it was a long slow progress to improve his technique.

And there was significant progress on his edge at take-off on the 3Lz even in the last two seasons. 18 months ago it was easy to see in slow motion that he had a tendency to rock back to towards the inside edge just before take-off. But by last winter he was avoiding edge calls and !s.

Orser has the reputation, as David Wilson pointed out in his interview, as being a 'fixer'. He can see a problem and its causes, break it down for the skater and work away at it. Sometimes a small change makes a big difference, other times it's step by step.

Are you sure it was the RusFed who told her that, and not Eteri? In light of subsequent developments, if it was said at all, it makes much more sense coming from Eteri, whom she left, than the RusFed, which is supporting her move to a Canadian coach.

It doesn't make sense for any of them to have said that actually.

Women in Russia, as elsewhere, need education and employment to be secure.

While there are some general social pressures to have children early, we've seen no evidence to support that in the elite skating milieu.

From my understanding, many Sambo70 skaters and those of other elite training centres follow university programs once they complete high school.

If anything both Eteri and the federation might have expressed concerns that Zhenya will miss out on some of Moscow University's programs that lay the foundation for coaching and choreography.

Oh, thank you! I never heard of it to be honest but I‘m no native speaker so it‘s a bit hard to get right with the proverbs since there‘s no actual translation from either German to English nor the other way round. (Or at least not one that makes sense and is known as a figure of speech in the respective country)

On Evgenia and who said that to her: I doubt some official of rusfed would go to her and say: “Congrats on your two Olympic Silver Medals! Now go get yourself a baby!“ That doesn‘t seem likely. And I don‘t think Eteri said it either. She might have said something along the lines of retirememt or - I don‘t know - advised Zhenya to retire once she‘d get that OGM because then she would have won everything and trying to compete with her quad girls would be stupid and stressful anyway or something like that. And somebody heard it, remembered the interview where Eteri talked about figure skaters not having longevity or getting problems with jumps due to their bodies getting ready for motherhood and decided to just mix it together and that‘s how we got that rumour. Or something along those lines. We all know how easily rumors start to exist. But I seriously doubt that anyone would say to go get pregnant to an athlete who just won two Olympic medals and is still in her teenage years!

As per usual, TSL accomplishes its task of making itself more visible by piggy-backing the human tendency of letting gossip and rumours take over their mind, spreading their malice by inserting the usual question of "but what if it really happened?" into the thoughts of people who listen to them, oblivious to the possibility that the boogie men might disappear if enough people stopped talking about them.

we should stick to hearing from her personally!

I hope to hear her telling TSL to go screw themselves. Are they having a seasonal exacerbation or what? Because last week one mental Russian journalist also started writing nonsense about skaters on a daily basis, literally.

Nina Mozer, the most rational person in Russian figure skating, gave an interview a week ago, where among other things she discussed Medvedeva's leaving. She explained it as a painful, but inevitable process that at some point happens to every athlete and on a regular basis - to every coach. And the biggest problem here is the media overdramatizing it and freaking everyone involved out. I first started translating this interview, then I thought that the question is not too relevant now, but now I'm determined to finish it soon.

If I recall the TSL video correctly I think the guy meant "go take care of your babies," "babies" meaning her junior skaters. Like go and develop more champions.

So, it wasn‘t referring to Evgenia at all but to Eteri? That would be quite hilarious.

I don‘t know this woman but I like her already! She seems reasonable and realistic compared to ... well, let‘s say other ”sources“.

And honestly, if Zhenya was reading the comment about babies anywhere she‘d probably have a good laugh about it and go back to training dedicatedly.
