2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

I don't think that both Tarakanova and Gubanova will be given spots. In fact, if Gubanova performs well this week, I could see her getting Tarakanova's spot. And Vasilieva's is certainly not set in stone either. Last year she was set for JGP 5 as well and didn't get it.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they try to placate ISU. Last year Russia had 5 in the top 6. They might catch a lot of flack if they take all 6 of the top spots. Not that they don’t have the talent to do so but I could see other countries being upset about this.

Hi guys, Im new here :)
I would kike to ask how you rate the performance of Anna Kuzmenko? I think she was little bit underscored especially today in FP.

Hi! Welcome and post often! :)

And I AGREE!! Anna was wonderful today! After the event was finished my mum asked me why the French girl with the Russian name ( ) was scored so low. Anna has amazing presence on the ice, she really engages with the audience! If only it hadn‘t been for that popped axel. :( If I had been allowed to judge (which thankfully I‘m not since I would be biased as hell  ) I would have had her much closer to the podium.

Good point that spots are often rescinded/switched. Does RusFed have to give them a name by a certain date? I guess I don't see why name a girl and then take it back, just say TBD if you don't know about someone.

What is it about Tarakanova that you think makes them doubt her? She hasn't skated poorly since her 2nd JGP last year and even then made the final and finished on the podium. And she did just as well at test skates as these other non-Eteri girls who got spots (Tarusina, Kanysheva, Sinitsyna) didn't she? But she has to prove herself a second time?

No, she didn't. She fell twice and URed quite a lot, compared to Sinitsyna, Kanysheva, and Tarusina who were all clean. It's understandable that she needs more time because of her illness, but like Gubanova, I would expect that to mean not skating on the JGP this season and just regrouping for Cup of Russia to qualify for a nationals. And Tarakanova herself said that if she wasn't clean at Open Moscow, she was told she wouldn't be skating at the JGP. And then she's not even skating there anymore? it seems kind of odd to me. I love her a lot, and I really like that Believer program, but I'm just scared she's not quite ready yet.

I think Tarakanova had issues with stamina at test skates, she was running out of steam at the end of her FS and made mistakes. But it‘s understandable, she was ill and needed to recover and then also changed her coach... I really loved her and the energy and power in her programs last year so I‘m really hoping for her to get an assignment. I‘m a bit worried since she‘s with Plushenko now and he‘s not exactly proven himself yet but I‘m hoping gor the best nevertheless.

Fluture: Thanks for reply, yes, Im thinking Im gonna be fun of Anna Kuzmenko. I like exactly what you mentioned - connection with audience in her. Its something what other russian girls seems to not have despite their indisputable technical and artistry dominance. Anna isnt so perfect, but she have some fire inside and own funny expression. I think I even saw her little clap for audience during her skate

I think when you skate a more fun and light music is almost required to play with the audience a little, when you skate a more serious music, you just need to convey the emotions. All Panova's skaters are also good performers, just watch Ksenia Sinitsyna's SP.

Tolstoj: I definitelly will. Its also a pity there is no document from Panova school on youtube. From Chrustalnyj there is dozen various, but from Snow leopards nothing while, based on current results, its second best girls figure skating school in Russia.

I loved Anna and her programs and the audience was going wild for her. She noticed this and even winked at our corner when we applauded her. She made a mistake on her 2A just seconds afterwards so I hope we didn‘t distract her too much. :(

So, yes, I do think that her performance ability is amazing. But I think we have to be fair, too. It‘s much easier to engage with the audience when you‘re skating to a fun program than to a serious one. It wouldn‘t seem appropriate if Alena Kostornaya was grinning and winking at the audience while portraying Juliet, right?

Fluture: Well, honestly, Alena also have that fire inside, maybe even more than Anna K. (I noticed that from her off ice videos on yt, she is little funny daredevil), but it look like she havent will to show it in her programs, which is unfortunatelly, I would love to see her such relaxed and in mood on the ice, not just bound to serious choreographies with heavy emotions.

Both her and the other coach Tatiana Moiseeva did an interview few weeks ago, they said their training process is very similar to what canadian and american skaters do, they often work with Rafael Arutyunyan's team and sometimes they send skater in US for his training camp in the summer.

I believe Alena Kanysheva's free skate is choreographed by Vera (Rafael's wife).

I liked both Kostornaya and Kanysheva and will keep it at that :).
Although I hope Kostornaya changes her dress. I really loved Kanysheva's.

The blue of her dress matched her eyes. And she has the most beautiful eyes, perhaps she should always wear that color. :luv17:

Nobody can compare with Alena Kostornaya today, everyone who has eyes, ears and soul to agree with me. Personally, I'm in love :luv17:

I was trying to think of even one senior who can compare to her. I can't think of one. Unrelated, but how much stress do you think Trusova is feeling right now? Eteri is 2 for 3, and Trusova's turn is coming up. I can't imagine that sort of pressure. I anticipate that she may play it safe, or safer, I suspect that we will see the quads and 3A's in the final.

Ahh I had forgotten about this. It makes sense that she and Vasilieva would be required to skate one more time to secure a spot. When is this event they are doing?
