Jason Brown

I didn't actually see BOrser leave but when the camera turned on Jason's K&C he wasn't there anymore, while he was seen with two other of his students who skated just before Jason... yes I know Wilson is named as his main coach, but still Orser also coaches him too, did it cost him so much to stay on for Jason for another 7-8 minutes or so??? He does look like having a good relation with Wilson, although I do doubt she would hold his hand when the score comes up like Kori always did... :sad21:
Anyway he just posted a positive message on IG, let's hope things will looking up as his confidence builds!

Sorry @Mrs.P yes indeed I rechecked and I did mistake the name of "Cha", I had always vaguely assumed it was "Chan" somehow - I guess I should remember better if he is capable of beating Hanyu

Ugh maybe I'm just sleep deprived and it's amplifying my disappointment but I don't like that FS. It's just so...bland. Boring. Not Jason. It's a classic Wilson "yeah here you go" dreck.

Is it just me who felt offended that BOrser was with Hanyu at K&C, and with Chan as well, then he left when Jason skated and let Wilson tend to him at K & C??? What is he, a chopped liver?:scowl:

:

I thought from very beginning it already was established that Orser wasnt going to be with Jason at every competition/not going to be the main coach.
At the time, Boyang was supposed to be coming to TCC.

So its not surprising Tracy ended up as the main coach since she really wanted to take on Jason in TCC

Jason and team need to find a way to calm his nerves during competition. Nerves was 1 big reason he didnt make to 2018 Olympics

Who was with Jason in the K&C for the short program?
Tracy and Karen also.

Interestingly, his ISU bio is not updated to list any TCC coaches.

I believe there is a limit to two people with a skater in the KnC - coaches and choreographers. My sense is that it was essential that a USFA accredited coach be with him at an ISU event where he represents the US.

Brian has accreditation for other countries, and reported just got accreditation for Russia while at test skates with Medvedeva, he doesn't have it with USFA.

If Tracy is Jason's primary, and Karen had to be there, it makes sense that Brian was elsewhere.

I also note that Brian seemed to be stepping back to let other members of the TCC coaching team shine. Ghislain was in the KnC quite a bit at ACI.

As long as Jason feels like he's making the technical progress he strives for, I'm not going to make a big deal which coach sits in the K&C or works with Jason the most. It's clear that Brian is working with him on some things and he's likely working with other TCC coaches on different aspects of his skating. I suppose we can be concerned from a politicking standpoint.

And as for the FS, I certainly won't be surprise if Jason comes back and trashes it. It's early season and there's a month until Skate Canada, he can totally do it.

That said, and I realize I'm in the deep minority here, I still like this program, even while acknowledging it needs more choreography, especially in the first half. There are two key reasons:

* I mentioned this before; I like the idea of Jason connecting with the audience in a more vulnerable way. I get that *this* doesn't seem like Jason because we're accustomed to his sunshine personality, but on the other hand, it's clear that he's experienced these very feelings in the last year. Yes, Jason is amazing at performance and giving this high-energy vibe. And yes, you can argue the Piano was like that -- but I don't think it's the same type of program. The Piano was more lyrical. Even Jason himself said he wanted to do a program where he could share this side of himself.
*I like that he gets to explore different kinds of movement. While this FS needs MORE choreography it doesn't mean there wasn't any. I love his spiral as much as you all do, but I don't mind that it's not in here. I really like both step sequences and I like the balletic leaps he has throughout.

I think this program can be great if Jason isn't in his head thinking about jumps, which is what was clearly at play here. Anyway we'll see. At least the SP already slays, so that's one program he doesn't have to worry about.

:agree: I've already stated that the first half needs some tweaking. The second half is really good. Do you think it's the music from the first half or does it need more choreography?

I actually think the music cuts are really good and it's a good contrast to Hazy Shade of Winter, so I don't think it's the music. I just think there needs to be more choreography TO the music.

There are two problem areas in the first half. He has some really nice choreography at the start and then suddenly it's "Time for Jason to hit his first 2 jumping passes" where it's completely devoid of any major choreography. He does some nice transitions to the 3S and then Camel spin and the ChSq, which is lovely. Then it's really empty until he does the second 3A -- it's like he's channelling Mirai Nagasu with the bit circle around the rink. But then it's nice after the 3A, he basically goes off the running edge right into the 3Lo (which he didn't miss for once, LOL). Then there's some good transitions into his combos the 3F-3T and the 3Z-3T-2T (which is RIGHT to the start of the cut of Hazy Shade of Winter, which I love)

So basically stop having him stalk all the hard jumps. I get he can't do Yuzuru crazy transitions but I'm hoping as he gets the technique down they can work on some better entrances to the jumps and some choreography in those parts of the program.

I like both of Jason's programs, I see so much potential in both of them. I snuck watching his LP during work, so I knew he didn't medal, but now looking at the scores, wow, it kinda hurts seeing he lost 3rd by less than a point. lol. But I absolutely can't wait to see what these programs look like after he gets to practice them for a month, and what he does at Skate Canada.

Oh no, an S&G program is going to be like Prince: muted everywhere:roll9:

Although I seem to recall a verrryy nice poster  and their dropbox account a few years ago with the muted Prince program;)

I don't think I can bring myself to watch this FP again anyway. :(

(We don't have an angel/halo emoji.)

Who knows, maybe at Skate Canada it will have become so amazing that I at least like it...

OK.

So usually I can rationalize and think through things, but sometimes at the cost of holding things in. So allow me a moment to say that it is still :sad46: to see Jason do so poorly! Yeah, yeah, I get that it's essentially the "pre-season" and that Jason's looking long-term blah blah blah, but after such an amazing skate the day before it was heartbreaking to see him just skate like that.

I'm also sad that people felt so let-down by his performance, which I have to agree with -- even though I see potential in the program and there's some lovely moments in there -- it's probably one of the rare times where he kinda let the mistakes take away from the performance.

(In case you wondered why I brought this up. My husband made some comment about how the chili I made needed some flavor and I found myself mad and in a foul mood. And my husband is like, "Is this really about chili?" And I realized that I was still kinda sad about the result....ugh sometimes I hate dealing with skating fan feelings.)

Now that I've said my piece...

His instagram story congratulating Jun for his performance is super sweet and nice! It's cool that he is surrounded by some amazing skaters now and I'm sure that will motivate him even more.

There's a lot of interesting comments from Tracy Wilson, including this bit of high praise:
“What he brings, though, cannot be ignored,” she added. “My husband can be in the rink and know nothing about skating, and be mesmerized by what Jason does. He could teach clinics for every step sequence and position details. He is integral to what the sport needs."

Actually I like both programs tho I feel the spiral needs to be in the FS.. it is one of Jason's signature moves like split jumps - what audiences look for when he skates and it is disappointing not to see it. Found myself wondering what Rohene would have done choreographically with the FS music but changing styles a bit is critical for Jason to increase tech value so we fans need to be patient. From that perspective, I give the performance a huge thumbs up considering how close it came to third place...he is on his way!! We can thank Kori and Rohene for thrusting Jason into the spotlight. I can see how his new team is making inroads toward expanding/refining his tech capabilities but Rome was not built in a day and I have high hopes!! A side note: I spent the summer watching all the videos of young Jason I could find and that trajectory was a long series of ups and downs but he never lost the joy. As a young man on this new journey in a highly competitive environment, joy will likely take a different form but it is an inherent part of Jason's nature and spirit and his big advantage. Look forward with anticipation to his next skate..

Jason semed to have fun in aci.
His learnings here will be beneficial for his next competitions.
As Ted said Jason is a classy gentleman.
Keep on smiling Jason.

Deleted because I didn't see Mrs. P's add-on above about the Lynn Rutherford article. Love Tracy's quote!

I'm glad I saw the results first - and since I saw it on Jackie Wong's twitter, I also saw the play-by-play, and therefore knew the worst at once. "Oh... dear… whatever happened?" I wondered. So, when I saw the program - and then only with music in the latter half as the first half was muted - I just now this very instant saw the whole program thanks to Mrs P's link - I was prepared for the worst.

It definitely needs work. Everything needs work - the program, the jumps, Jason's confidence. To me it seems that he went out and just skated the SP - and far overthought the FP, and second-guessed himself. I feel about him as I've always felt about Liza - if he just believes in himself I'm sure he can do it. Hopefully this will come with time, and he can take the SP with him as a positive sign.

And a thought just occurred to me whilst watching the FP. As I recall it, Javi's Guys & Dolls program wasn't all that great in the beginning either - it was just... okay. Hopefully this too can grow and develop.

This was disappointing, to be sure - and there's no use disguising it - but I believe that better will come.:)

After seeing the complete program I'm still not sold on the FS (and not because of the technical errors). Jason wasn't trolling when he made his comments about the jump changes being a work in progress so some errors were not unexpected. I hope changes are made to the choreography though. For me, the only time Jason really came alive was the transition jump combo into the Hazy Shade of Winter.

I loved Tracy comments in the Lynn Rutherford article. What I found most interesting was this quote:

“It’s a fine line trying to find room for improvement, and so that’s what we are trying to do. We are throwing a lot at him. We’re going to pull back a little.

It sounds promising that they are going to pull back a little on all the changes. The throwing everything in at once didn't work for the FS. IMO, if the TCC team want Jason to progress he needs have little successes along the way to develop confidence in the new technique.

I think the SP could be deemed a small success, IMO. 3Z< aside, that program was solid. The 3A looked amazing and he looked confident (some judges gave it a +4! And he got a few of +2 and +3 too.) and relaxed out there. It probably helped of course that he had the SP much longer so it's easier to integrate the new technique there. But still, the score was solid for this point in the season and made a lot of people take a second look at him.

And I know some might think I was being harsh with the trolling comments, but honestly I was really expecting way worse watching the practices and was surprised what he ended up doing there. The comments came back to bite me in the FS, obviously.

So where did that info come from about Jason not doing a quad this season? Was it TSL via Doug? Had he been getting it in practice and that's why they decided to include it?

I know there were comments last season from various sources saying that the intense choreo of his programs was keeping him from concentrating on the big jumps, and that it should be simplified. But I also remember comments a few years back saying that steps added before his 3A kept him from thinking about it and stalking it too much and it therefore improved. It sounds like they are going for keeping it simple in the LP this year to focus on the jumps. It has to be hard to decide what is best, especially when you're in the early stages of getting to know your student, but I honesty think Jason needs to have something to do early on in the program besides just think about the big jumps.
