Is it better to be later in the draw?

Scoring at particular competition is always inevitably in some rate relative to other skates. At the beginning judges have no comparison so they are more careful on scores to leave some space for the later competitors. Later, when they have comparisons with previous skates, they are more willing to give higher GOEs.
Even during olympics when Alina skated her FP, after her score was revealed, NBC commentators said "they have to leave some space for next competitors" or something like that. I don't say it is always damaging, just look at JGP, at least one russian girl always skated right in the first group in SP and they still received top scores.

Thank you, flanker.

I'm sure Alena will be scored high, only question is how high. Will she break any WRs? :)
I would give her a WR personally because when she is clean, she is the absolute total package and more. But because she doesn't have quads, her BV is too low to get a WR.

Well nobody has quads in sp but she does have one of the lowest bv's of all the Russian skaters so a new wr would be a stretch in its current state. Personally I would like to see her break her pb more than anything. She has improved and grown so much since jw and this short program is an experience. She deserves a new pb for it but anything over 70 will send me to bed very happy.

She might put in a 3A in the free. And I think her jumps are very high so she can get high GOEs for them.

is she sick? she looks like she has a cold.

I thought so as soon as she got out on the ice at warm up. Her eyes and nose were very red and she looked awfully pale but I was hoping it was just that she wasn't wearing as much make-up as usual but she did a gorgeous 2A and I was sure she was going to pull it together. But you know what? She still broke 70 and that was all I was really praying for. Anything else was a bonus. It's just a shame it was on her axle because it is her best jump and the one she feels most confident with. Oh well - back on the horse for the free. She's still in an amazing position and there was plenty of room to improve from Linz there in her free. Plus she still has never fallen in an international competition. She can still claim that on her resume.

Exactly. She wasn't looking well and i was seriously worried after the axel she might crumble.. fortunately our Alenka is a fighter! Seeing her cry was heartbreaking, though... :sad4:

Awww Alena. You just want to tell her not to be so hard on herself. She was so beautiful and one popped jump didn't ruin that.

My beautiful fighter! She is on first place! :hap10: Was the ice wrong? Dudakov showed her something on ice..

Don't cry, Alena! You're such a wonderful person and skater! Mistakes can happen to everyone. You will come back stronger! :ghug:

is she sick? she looks like she has a cold.
Either that or looks like she was crying before the competition. But something's definitely off. She wasn't reacting nearly this badly when she fell during last season's Russian jr nationals SP, for instance. And this wasn't even a fall. It really makes you wonder...

Alenka should not be so hard on herself...she just does not realise how talented and amazing she is. :sad21:

I observed from the warm-up that she is so pale, too. And thinking about her last competition, where she was also quite nervous, I was asking myself what did happen? There is something that makes her so anxious during this season...

She was shocked by that mistake, but was able to recover and skate clean afterwards. That proves that she is a true fighter, and her 1st place is well-deserved, she should receive even more PCS for that breathtaking performance. She is an angel, this program is beautiful :luv17:

It did look like something was bothering her before she started. I don't think it had anything to do with her mistake. Hopefully its not bad news for her. :/
