I remember you talking about the book back when I first joined - when I came outSean, I think you would enjoy reading Ellyn Kestnbaum's book, Culture on Ice. She makes the following provocative point.
Precisely. So therefore when male skaters display their charms for the approval of the audience, they are assuming the societal role of the subservient female.
(Hey, don't blame me -- this is the post-neofeminist view.)
I don't think it is the moves, I don't think it is the role, it is the individual "playing it up" like he is Elton John (but even Elton gave that crap up once he received the attention he realized it was more rewarding to be "loved" for the talent). And I mean the outfits. Not the activities, action, etc.. whatever.Anyway, that is why no matter how macho our guys may strut across the ice, male skating -- like all performance art -- is basically a gay activity.
hwell: .
I also don't see the comparisons to Jesus Christ in his LP. I think both Mark and Nancy should just shut up and mail a check to Tonya Harding (without whom neither would've had a career--ooh time for a new thread!).
IMO, if a public figure is gay, they should be the one to say so to the media, IF they want to be known as such in the public media. I have a friend who trained with Evan and is privy to a lot of secrets in the skating world, and he told me these things in confidence. I respect the skaters too much to go blabbing about it on message boards. Basically, I take the stance of my favorite movie: It's nobody's business but theirs.
Simply put, Lund has no business outing anyone.
Lund is not Christian, so I don't see why he would be offended by Johnny Weir skating a program about Jesus Christ.
ITA, it should not even be an issue.Simply put, Lund has no business outing anyone.
Personally that thought scares me. I would be concerned if "Hollywood rules" dictated a substantial amount of decision making in a sport that is only PART performance. Yet....In some ways I must agree, if "Hollywood" rule is in force then so can "Vegas" and Kat can wear that outfit and ect....!... if it can work for hollywood, let it work for skating.
:agree: But really, if I want a Hollywood show I'll look to a Hollywood production. If I want the most unique sport in the word that combines forms of athleticism within a performance, FS.Ban him? Is that the solution, control peoples opinions and freedom of speech? I think Johnny might even say, Lund has a right to think and say what ever he wants about him. Besides, I have got to believe Johnny loves the attention. It is obvious he will take a controversial idea and make it known to the world flagrant and intentionally - like skating for team USA and showing more support for Russia. The guy WANTS it, let him have it as long as it is at no one else's expense. On Mark Lund's comments - This individual should be banned from any association with the gay & skating community. He is nothing but a gay-Russ Limbaugh!
I am undecided about this. Some people think that the scandals made people say, oh, figure skating is all fixed so I am not going to watch it any more. And why no mention of the "publicity of the SLC scandal" being a good thing? Is publicity really "always a good thing?"![]()

Would it be OK if someone said that "I don't want Sasha representing me" because she doesn't provide enough "support" for the Jewish community? Or that Kristi and MK shouldn't represent this country because they aren't "American" enough?
Personally that thought scares me. I would be concerned if "Hollywood rules" dictated a substantial amount of decision making in a sport that is only PART performance.
I don't want a bunch of Paris Hiltons on the ice...
Well... why not?? There is already one, but his buddy's name is Pairs.
I love watching him skate he's awesome.

I find this to be a repeat of the Rosie-Clay-Kelly issue. She said that Kelly's comments [about Clay putting his hand over her mouth] were homophobic. Since Rosie is gay, she feels that she has the right to speak for other gay people. She didn't care that Clay has never officially outed himself.
BTW, according to Johnny's website he's 5'9". That does not seem correct, but I'll have to see what he looks like at Nationals relative to everyone else's height.
By the way, there is a thread over on the Michelle Kwan Forum about this. They are on Lund's case not because of Johnny, but because he dissed Michelle by saying she's not all that great because she only won a silver and a bronze Olympic medal.
But then I think Nancy must have nudged him, like, hey, chump, what about me? Because at the end of the show he took it back and said, oh, I was wrong about that, Michelle's great.![]()
