Nathan Chen

From Jackie's twitte "I train about 1.5 hrs by myself, and then off campus with other people ... I do FaceTime with Raf sometimes". This is not clear to me, does it mean he has his own ice time on campus 1.5 hours a day? And then he trains more in nearby rinks?

Interesting, he didn't do one butterfly jump in his ChSq and then another one directly after that as a spin entry, he only did the latter... it's probably a smart choice, because it shortens the ChSq and gives him some more time to do the jumps in the second half (which he very obviously needs), and I had actually noticed in SV and 'The Ice' that it was a bit repetitive to have two butterfly jumps so close to each other...

...then again, I miss those cool lunge-like steps he did between the two butterfly jumps and I hope his ChSq is not too short/empty now to receive positive GOE (not sure they will count the butterfly entry as part of both, the spin AND ChSq...?)
And what happened to that spreadeagle done with cool hand gestures to the music into a jump? That was one of my favourite moves in that program. Sigh. I didn't finish watching the JO performance so this was my first time seeing the actual stsq (not the chsq that Sam did for him) and I was a quite underwhelmed - it felt thrown toegether and I really was expecting way more from MFD. Also he was trying to jam pack so many jumps into the that section right before the chsq while the music just repeats and repeats and repeats, and I felt the effect of the chsq has been greatly diminished.

Yeah, he left out quite a bit... :(
During SV he did a few nice, extra turns during his jump set-ups that I enjoyed, nothing too eye-catching and more subtle, but still made a difference...
and I wish I could be confident that he will add it back in bit by bit as the season progresses, but knowing Nathan... *sigh

I was actually not too fond of that hand gesture, but he should definitely have at least one spreadeagle in his program at some point, because his is the most beautiful of all men (straight legs and close to no bend at the waist, gorgeous!)

For me the StSq lacks some originality or something special (like in MLD where it was trying to give us that 'pouncing tiger' feel), but one thing I kinda like about it is the fact, that it's not as crammed as those of many other skaters, because that can sometimes make all those steps feel random... Nathan's feels decluttered and a bit more deliberate, and in that run-through from thursday's practice he had nice distance and flow across the ice when he was doing his brackets towards the end of it, so that was nice.

It might be a bit thrown together. We didn't see the original form, and some of the original choreo in other places has apparently been left out (I say apparently because I haven't watched Japan Open or practice videos). So, it's hard to say what the step sequence looked like as choreographed. Or maybe the original wasn't that great. But we don't really know.

Practice run thru filmed from the other side of the rink. Really love the 4Lz. Don't think I've ever seen anyone land one with so much control.

:thank:

He rotates so fast that the 3Lo looks like a double.

Can Nathan find a way to make his hair as fluffy as Beethoven's and not obscure his eyes when he skates?

Whether Nathan’s hair looks 18th century, Anakin Skywalker, or 1990’s ... it’s just not flattering to his face shape and jawline, and all that hair flailing in his face and eyes as he skates is really distracting and doesn’t look very comfortable either.

Oh well - it’s just hair ... and he seems to like it :p

I love his hair style, it's very unique, but they should probably design it along with the artistic expression of the program. maybe a tie-back style for the SP? :scratch2:
I am sure he will do something about it if it is uncomfortable for him.

That’s what I am thinking too.

Dropping by to wish Nathan Good Luck tonight.:cheer: He has two really nice programs this season and his jumps
look fabulous. I read that he was ill during JO and I am glad that he has recovered and feeling better.

You have to admire how the skaters compete with injuries and illness. I don't know how they do it but being an athlete
sometimes they don't have the option to say home.
