Nathan Chen

The uncut edition of CaOI was broadcast and Tatsuki Machida provided commentary.

Some of Machida's comments about Nathan:

1. Nathan has gotten bigger over the last couple of years and it was Machida's impression that Nathan was having difficulty controlling his body while it is growing.
2. The Saitama ice is unusual in that it has a hard surface, but underneath it is soft. As a result the ice may not be be suited to Nathan.
3. Nemesis is Nathan's representative work.

Most likely the first is just a solo 3Lo. Otherwise he'd be repeating 3Lo, 3T, and 4T.
wonder if people in prediction thread will start editing their answers after seeing the layout. Anyway, can't wait to see Nathan competing tomorrow!:luv17:

So ... do we think Nathan is going to follow his planned layout?

1 quad SP, 3 quad FS

Seems like a good idea to go for clean programs and higher GOE

Raf says the training situation has been ‘very difficult’ and apparently can only Skype with Nathan for 5-10 minutes at a time.

Nathan's planned layouts:
http://cloud.isu.org/index.php/s/8qqnBMTeGK21uWE
SP: 3A, 4F+3T, 3Lz
FS: 3Lo+3Lo, 4Lz, 3F+3T, 3A, 4T+3T, 4T+2T+2Lo, 3Lz

Um, seriously...? I don't think this is his actual layout at all (he never sticks to what he writes down anyway), but since parts of it might still be right:

Why would he do such a variety of quads? (4F only in the SP, 4Lz only in the FS...)

(I'm also sure he will go for a 4Lz in the SP, should he mess up the 4F...)

Also, why would he do most of his quads AND combos in the second half of his FS... pick one or the other to rack up some more points thanks to the bonus, but don't do both!
Because I don't trust that he has been able to build up the needed stamina for that (not so early in the season, and he possibly won't be able to do that even later, with college taking up so much of his time and energy)

I think he might still go for a 4Lo in the beginning? Because it's strange he wouldn't want to get one quad out of the way right at the start, because that has been his MO for such a long time now

re 4Lo: I also don't trust that he will only go for 3 quads... if he does, it'll be a very smart move and I'll applaud that, but... he's not been known to exercise restraint

I am happy if he indeed does just a nice triple as his last jump, so his ChSq doesn't get messed up again, because setting up a quad took up too much time

ETA: I hope that he indeed does a less ambitious layout and that it goes well, and he doesn't get beaten by Zhou's planned 7 quad performance, teaching him that he doesn't always have to go all-out on technical difficulty!

I think this is the most nervous I have been as a Nathan fan. Raf's interview is a little concerning. I wonder if Nathan is doing off ice training at the same level he did last year. Part of the reason I was not worried about his stamina with the shortened time, was he was in peak physical fitness last season. I am not so sure he is there this season. I can't wait to read Jackie's practice notes later.
