I‘ve already commented in Zhenya‘s fanfest but I‘m doing it here again.
Saying it bluntly: This was a difficult competition to watch. I‘d have never predicted a mistake as it happened in the SP and I think Brian and Zhenya wouldn’t have either. It shows a lot about her strength to come back in the FS like that. I‘m proud of that. It shows that despite the problems she‘s facing, despite the nervousness and her not being 100% ready, her strong personality is still there.
I know there are people out there who expect her to be completely consistent and are willing to turn on her because at the moment she‘s not. Honestly, even I expected her start of the season to go a lot smoother than it did and was somewhat shocked. But this GP taught me one thing: Evgenia is human. It took her this long to make major mistakes in one of her programs, it took her an injury and changing her whole life. That‘s a lot. She‘s achieved a lot. Now things aren‘t all rosy, I definitely see that. She needs to work on her steps and spins, for someone of her level it‘s not excusable that she keeps getting level 3s and Vs. Her e on the second lutz was a clear message: you can get away with 2 but fix the edge before you put in 3. It will be her team‘s decision whether or not they‘ll ditch the second one in the FS or not. I think it would be strategically more wise since that‘s a lot of points she lost there in the FS. That + the UR on the loop + the spins issues likely cost her the silver medal and maybe even gold. The UR seems to be definitely a lack of stamina. They need to work on that, she keeps doing Loop combos in practice (like 3S-3Lo, 2A-3Lo), it can‘t be an issue on the jump itself. Maybe do more full run-throughs if that‘s what she needs. The choreography looked better now that she performed it with more determination and grit, she got level 4 on her step sequence in the free. That‘s good.
As for the SP: Backloading the combo seems risky. Maybe she could do a 3F-3Lo as the opening pass later in the season. Is the 2A required to be the solo jump in the SP? Otherwise she could backload that and do her 2A-3Lo if the 3F-3Lo fails. Anyways, for now the backloaded combo seems too much of a risk. I know it was probably put there because they banked on her consistency and hoped to beat Zagitova with it + better PCS. But for now the goal isn‘t really to beat Alina, she‘s far out of reach at the moment. What she needs to do now is be clean and try to regain her status as Russia‘s #2 because Liza seems ready to grab it.
She‘s got a month to work before France. It‘s a tough field with Rika Kihira there and she likely needs to win to go to the GPF. That will be pressure. Let‘s see how she copes.
But all in all, for me it‘s a good sign that she can come back with a good FS after such a disastrous SP. It’s also way too early to blame her coach for everything. Such mistakes are costly but they can happen to everyone. Just because they never did to Zhenya doesn‘t mean she‘s immune to them. Also about her pretty low score: judging‘s much harsher this season at the GP so far. It will be interesting to see whether the trend continues next week in Finland. She could have got a score even high enough to win without that e on the lutz, no UR and no issues on spins. If she works on that, I can see her score being closer to what she got last season again.
