2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

Can Liza do a 3F? That will give her a couple more points in the free (and in the short if she does a 3Lz-3T). She seems to have a PCS ceiling of around 68 though which is why I am not too bullish about her chances. But technically she is looking very strong. The next step would be to add a second triple axel to the free, instead of a double axel.

Liza landed a 3Lz-3T, a first for her I think. She seems to be going really strong this year, she would have finished second here if it were not in Japan. Evgenia is looking very fragile right now, if Russia only had 2 spots I don't think I would give one to her. Even if Evgenia starts going clean, she will get UR and e calls now--and even had she gone clean both programs, had she been at the NHK, would have finished a distant 4th.

Zhenya really has a slim chance to win gold. She could get silver and then has to score higher than Sakamoto to qualify. Hope her team works hard the next 2 weeks to get her to the final.

Congrats for Liza, but what Japan did there is a little fishy and it makes her in a bad position for the final because she will have Kihira, Zagitova and Miyahara in front of her.

I hope in the classic Canadian judging which is usually very strict to start calling those clear underrotations with negative GOE :rolleye:

(Even though usually none of that applies to GPF)

Stop.

Her BV is 6 points higher most of the ladies and only 2 points lower than Kihira.

The results at NHK don't well represent the difficulty of Liza's free skate, considering Medvedeva got 80 in TES in the past for much less than that.

If something crazy doesn’t happen at Cup of Russia, the podium should be:

1. Alina
2. Mako
3. Sofia

At IDF, the podium will likely be

1. Rika
2. Evgenia
3. ?

The Grand Prix final will probably be
1. Alina
2. Rika
3. Satoko
4. Liza
5. Mako

6. (Tie-breaker)

Zhenya NEEDS at least a silver in France with a total above 213.91 (I believe that’s the number, correct me if I’m wrong). That’s only if Rostelecom goes according to predictions. That way she can win the tie-breaker and go to the final. Realistically the safest option is to win France, but with Rika there I doubt it.

Rika has made things… interesting. A clean Alina will beat a clean Rika unless her PCs rise, but for that to happen she needs to be consistent and perform clean skate after clean skate. But if Alina has a few shaky landings, Rika may very well overtake her. Time will tell I suppose

In other news, Sasha has seemingly moved the 3t onto the 4lz. Her and Anna have been hammering the 4lz3t at practice and they look good :)

I really hope and believe that Zhenya's team will change the layout and will do everything so that she can qualify. Fingers crossed. She needs 213 points if she skates clean with 2 Flips instead of 2 Lutzes and Level 4 spins she can do it!

Sasha and Anna are quad monsters! 4Lz + 3T!!!! This season is the most exciting so far. Ladies competition has become so unpredictable, I love it! With Rika this year in seniors and the 3 A's next year in seniors the next season will be even more exciting. TBH I do not even follow men's competitions that closely anymore because ladies take up my whole free time haha.

Even if Zhenya can make the final, if the narrative for this season is once again "Miyahara will grab a medal no matter what", then there is simply no space for her to make the podium.

I guess the only real purpose to qualify is now just a battle between her and Konstantinova for that third spot at Nationals.

she's not perfect. she could get 4-5 point more and get 80+ TES, it's hard for her to get 70+ PCS though and that's what holding her back.

I could easily see Rika’s PCS rising enough to beat a clean Alina, if Rika is at or near the top for several competitions in a row. We’ve seen it time and time again with up-and-comers with monster tech, regardless of whether the PCS rise is earned.

Updates:
1. Zhenya needs to win in France or get silver with 214. I hope she can do it, I must see her in the final!
2. Samodelkina has fixed her flip edge and got 210 at Volkov Memorial. She won - Akatieva second - Usacheva third - Kromykh fourth - Muravyeva fifth - Berestovskaya sixth.
3. Liza's GOE on her jumps really is criminal. But she's in the final! the first Russian qualifier
4. Anna Frolova (coach: Panova) has qualified for junior nationals (4+2)

So well done to Liza, incredible to see her come back like this after 3 years of darknes. Congratulations for her GPF qualification!! What a great accomplishment!

As for Zhenya, right now there are 2 possible scenarios:

Scenario 1: assuming that Alina will win Rostelecom, if Mako gets a silver there then Zhenya will need at least a silver at IDF with a score higher than Kaori's 213.90

Scenario 2: assuming that Alina will win Rostelecom, if Mako gets bronze or lower, Zhenya will need at least a silver at IDF with a score higher than the other skaters who got silver+bronze (potentially Mako, Sofia and Stanislava), but not necessarily higher than Kaori's 213.90, because both Kaori and Zhenya could qualify in this case, thanks to the lack of a skater with 2 silver medals.

3. Liza's GOE on her jumps really is criminal. But she's in the final! the first Russian qualifier
It's really hard to avoid the impression that the judging at NHK Tropy was criminally favoritist to home skaters. Liza was not alone in suffering from that.

Is there a list GP standings?

wonder if she can just do 2 combos because it seems to have a much better success rate?

No, the second was downgraded to a 3lz and it was a lovely 3Lz, one of the better ones she has done recently, her knees were absolutely gorgeous going into it, but she was so focused on trying to get that last rotation in she lost sight of where she was in the air and couldn't land it. They should get rid of the second 4Lz for now. It's such a huge physical risk with little chance of any real reward. Let her focus on stabilizing the 4lz-3t now and incorporate a second one later, not just chuck it there mid season in case she messes up the first. That's just asking for trouble, as Sergei, our emotional stone icon, visibly cringing in the background when she fell indicates.

That's not quite true - she received just a < call on the second 4Lz. And she will need both to compete with Trusova. I think what they should do now is switch the 3Lz-3Lo in the short to 3Lz-3T because she's now missed it 3 times out of 4.

3. Liza's GOE on her jumps really is criminal.

The GOEs are not criminal. If you look actually at the requirements for GOEs and how to get +3-5 the judging is accurate especially considering that Elizaveta often takes a long time to prepare her jumps which leads to the judges having to deduct points from her GOEs. The judging was fair imo.
