Evgenia Medvedeva

I agree, I was kind of puzzled honestly. Looking at the footage from test skates you can see that her body hasn't changed that much. But especially the SP dress makes me feel like the aspect ratio has been changed or something and her body looks wider than it is. I think it's the cutout shapes on the sides, and maybe the shape of the detailing on the chest.

I don't really like either costume, the design just doesn't seem to suit her.

Honestly, wasn't the first Anna Karenina dress made by Olga overnight, just with stuff she had at home? I understand if Zhenya's body has changed and new measurements would need to be taken so it wasn't convenient, but I really wish that Zhenya could have had her costumes made by Olga. Maybe they could have taken measurements during test skates. I read that the dress for Nocturne being so beautiful encouraged Zhenya -- she said it helped her jump. Surely such dresses would help Zhenya in this difficult transition period, right?

I agree. For the 2nd dress the upper body design is unflattering. Well for her current free skate dress the designer is in Utah. Unless they somehow met in person, Evgenia sent her measurements to the designer and presto she has a dress. I still think it is possible for her to do this with Olga for Nationals. It doesn't need to be fancy, but something that flatters her and fits the theme of the program. Another option would be to meet Olga after Nationals in person and she could fit her for the dress and then ship it to her.

Olga and Lisa McKinnon are just on another level and Zhenya deserves that!

I am fairly confident that this is not Evgenia’s new dress. Dressmakers never post stuff on social media without their client’s permission and rarely before the program debut. I don’t think Lisa was revealed as the designer of Maia’s SD dress last season until the GPF. They will post teases perhaps, Olga and Brad Griffies do this.

So no need to panic!

I know she picked Ladu based on Jason and the designer is Russian but I would love if she could go to Northern Michigan and get a dress from Stephanie Miller and Luanne Williams, the costume designers for Alissa Czisny, Meryl and Charlie, Tessa and Scott (before they moved to Montreal). I presume they made costumes for the Shibs and Madison and Evan too. It’s frustrating that they have zero social media presence.

Anyway I feel like if you’re working with a new dressmaker I feel like you should pick someone closer that can make alterations and you can do fittings with. Working long distance is always a gamble.

I don’t see how anyone can look at Zhenya and think she’s “big”.

That‘s not what I wanted to say at all! Zhenya isn’t big, of course she isn’t! In fact, Zhenya is EVERYTHING but big. Her legs are still thin even with this dress and in her workout clothes she looks slender but strong and healthy. It‘s just that sometimes the proportions of one‘s body together with how a dress is being cut makes you look different from what you really look like. I can‘t account from how it looks in person because I‘ve never seen it but on screen, this dress creates sort of an illusion. Her FS skate doesn‘t have this issue. It‘s just some of us fans being used to dresses fitting Zhenya 100% and now having a hard time accepting she might try something new and it might not work the very first time. Because I‘m being honest here: The dress she has in the SP doesn‘t help portray the image the program was set out to show. A litle sassy, flirty and sexy. That‘s what Sandra said. This dress is neither. And that‘s why we are worried a bit. Because we see Zhenya is having a hard time to interpret this program even though she already did it wonderfully at test skates and so we want everything to be 100% perfect in terms of packaging and presentation so that she can just “ease into it“.

I hink looks play an important role in how you are able to present yourself. If Zhenya feels confident and sexy in her new outfit then everything‘s perfectly fine. Her issues, however, make me wonder whether she truly does. And even if it‘s not the costume that‘s causing all these problems primarily (which is kind of obvious that it‘s not a dress problem) it can still turn to be an important factor. Last year Zhenya changed dress after her injury, as to not associate the emotions of pain and suffering with her dress but rather a “new start“. And after these two competitions, I think this could help. Erase the SCI failure that bothered her in France, too. Give her a new dress, new make up, new hairstyle and make a few changes to the choreography. I believe it would feel like a different program altogether and might help her leave the issues of the past behind and go into this competition (RusNats) with a fresh mind and fresh strength to fight. But that‘s just what I think, her team is the one who has to decide in the end.

But imo, it‘s not like it‘s too much of an issue to send the requirements to Olga and she sends dresses back to Canada. She‘s been making dresses for Zhenya for ages, she knows her measurements. And from what I‘ve seen she has lots of customers all over the world, so oversea shipping probably wouldn‘t be a problem either. If Zhenya wants a change, that‘s fine but why not make it next year when there‘s ENOUGH time to talk to the dress maker she chooses, try the dresses on, see whether they fit properly and make alterations before the season even starts.

That‘s actually one of the few problems I have with her team. They always seem to want to rush and make every change there possibly is NOW but in the end try to be layback too a la “you don‘t have to win everything right now“. It‘s a bit confusing, honestly. Why not take it bit by bit? First one program in new style, like a tango and something lyrical + a sassy program for ex. Next season when she‘s comfortable with that, choose a jazz program as the competitive one. This season when there‘s already a lack of time make the dresses with Olga whom Zhenya knows. Next season, by any means, choose somebody else. Focus on the flutz and axel first, then change combos, maybe in GPF when there‘s nothing to lose. But NOT when she has her (so far) most important competition coming up that she needs to win to go to the final! I think both Zhenya and her team underestimated the impact such heavy changes can have on one‘s soul, that they can sometimes be simply overcharging. Brian said they had a plan of 4 years. Great! Then why rush everything now?

Don‘t get me wrong, I don‘t hate her team or want her to go back to her old one. It‘s just that recently I‘ve come to question some of the decisions that‘ve been made. I will continue to believe in Zhenya and her team, however. They said it takes at least one year. Let‘s give them one year and see. I wish Zhenya all the best at Nationals and lots of support. My pretty critical post above should in no way mean that I‘ll stop supporting her or anything. Nope, not gonna happen. I‘ll be dying with nervousness before RusNats but I‘ll be her fan whatever happens, now and in the future.

Yeah I just think that it's mainly hard to see this happen since we are really used to seeing her clean all the time.
I guess we just need to step back a bit and enjoy this journey, - wherever it leads.

Does Olga also make dresses for non-Eteri skaters?

So we are less than 3 weeks away from RusNats. What do you think her layout will be?

She made dress for Kanysheva so she doesn’t work exclusively with Eteri’s skaters

That would explain why I love Alena‘s dress so much.

No, seriously, Olga makes dresses for skaters all over the world and obviously they aren‘t coached by Eteri. So, I think Eteri‘s students are just the most notable ones because they include many Olympic and World medalists.

Great how you expressed your opinion

On being sexy: She seems to be going through the time on where one is 12 year old, we don't feel very confident because we are not seeing in ourselves what we were used to see. In body and mind. I guess we can say it is a delayed "awkward age/time"

And there is also the factor; to whom is she directing her sexy side? Or moreover, what kind of look do you want from the public? How to show your best parts, which best parts, and to whom. I think she doesn't have the answer for that yet. But, all that is needed is time. To be honest, it is a great start what she did until now. Even though she doesn't seem to grasp the concept much, I guess we need to "not know something" before fully understanding it.

Regarding her team: I think each one is in a different page, with different intentions. Brian seems to speak a lot about Yuna in the interviews, even though the interviewer is asking about Evgenia. But, I am nobody to say that maybe, he is projecting his wish of fixing his problems with Yuna Kim, or having a new Yuna Kim. Again, pure speculation. I do think a psychologist would be good for her ( and also Brian to be honest, he seems to be under a lot of stress between so many students ). I hope she sees that going to the psychologist doesn't make you weak, but rather, it makes you more conscious of oneself.

The sp dress: I think someone told somethino regarding a sack of potatoes being better than the dress that she has ( as a joke ). But, if you think about it, wouldn't be great a dress of sack of potatoes like the one Marilyn Monroe once used? Look out, I think it would be tremendously funny, cute, sassy and a little sexy on her ( gah how embarrassing to write this )

Anyway, only my opinion. Coming from a professional couch critique (?)

Oh, I disagree. She may not be comfortable with the SP, but look at the Beautiful Mess ex. She's completely comfortable with that, and you do get what she's doing there right? Night gown-like dress, loose "men's" shirt...

Agree, Beautiful Mess really suits her. And it's not like this is the first time she tried something 'sexy'. Look at her 'Vogue' EX, it's not my favourite though, but still.

You are right! It could be that intention she had with the EX!

But even so, I can't help but see the program as someone imagining how it is to be grown up. Making up romances and stories in her head, and living them up with her dance. Like a child trying her parents clothes.

But again, is my opinion. From a complete nobody. Don't take it seriously.

I think it is also the style of music. It is an old song and something that you hear more at a wedding. Maybe the Girl from Ipanema would have been better, haha! A little hipper and more relatable.

We are all complete nobodys who just happen to love the same skater. That‘s what we all have in common on here. And it‘s completely fine to express our opinions, even if we don‘t all have the same one. :)

I do see that Zhenya isn‘t comfortable with her SP at the moment. But as she showed such a great interpretation at test skates (which is quite ironic, isn‘t it. With all Russian officials and her old coaching team there, shouldn‘t she have been more nervous?) it leads me to believe that she has it in her to portray such an image. Especially when we see her current exhibition program. I don‘t know what‘s causing the issues, I just know that her interpretation has become gradually worse from competition to competition. That‘s why I think a change of image with a totally new look might be beneficial.

When I first saw her “beautiful mess”, I thought she looked like a girl waking up in her boyfriend’s bed in lingerie and wearing his shirt.

I’ve been thinking that she hasn’t looked confortable in her short program because of the new jump technique & the do-or-die nature of the sp.
