Pairs SP

Jessica DUBE / Bryce DAVISON CAN 53.39 6

OUCH!

This is a pair has been hyped too much simply because of their looks. They have their strength, especially unison, but they do have lots of weaknesses. No power, no speed, both throws and sbs jumps are not technically sound.

there we go!! i knew they could do it!! Go Shen and zhao!!!

also congrats to Rena and John ofr holding onto third in this deep field!!! but Marcox and Butin beat naomi and lefttheris?? not fair.!

bummer to see Brooke and Ben so far down... but I have confidence they'll pull up in the long. They're good. :)

Strange that both the newly crowned American and Canadian champs would be so far down in the standings. Meanwhile, the 2nd placers (M/B and I/B) are up on top.

Nerves perhaps? Or inexperience?

I don't think so. In the case of I/B - they had a rough go at nationals... I wouldn't be surprised that IF they (read in John) keep it together they make the podium

I'm more surprised to see Brooke and Ben as the third place US team in this event so far...

Actually at US nationals I thought the US pairs were all three pretty bad. Poor speed, poor unison, poor lifts and in a few cases poor side by side jump attempts. Of the three I think only Nam and her partner have potential, but they are pretty raw.

This is C/O's first major international competition. 55 points are decent mark for a discipline that's notorious for rewarding reputation. Plus they do not have sbs triples.

I insist D/D are hyped too much by Canadians due to their looks.

I'd have to disagree with that. They proved that looks has nothing to do with it at Canadians. You don't win simply by "looking good". They ARE an amazing team with amazing potential, but they are still so young compared to the rest of the teams. They are the best hopes to revive pairs in Canada IMO.

any videos of this good looking candian team? i am not fimilar with them.

Castile and Okolski had the skate of their life at U.S. Nationals, 20 points above their previous best, IIRC. Even with that they beat Inoue and Baldwin only because of two falls by I&B. So I am not surprised they they are only third among the American teams, also behind Nam and Lefteris.

In fact, in the SP at U.S. Nationals it was I&B, N&L, the Castile and Okolski, just like here.

No real surprises so far, IMO.

I&B's complaint

Funny, Baldin is complaining about their marks again. Seriously, those PCS is pretty generous to them today.

Baldwin, however, was not pleased that they only received a level three on their spiral sequence.

“That's one of our best things. It's something we can always get a plus one on,” Baldwin said. “That could bring us up and make us comparable to the Chinese. We got held down on that tonight.”

The pair is planning on beefing up its repertoire, including the addition of a split triple twist, if it wants to become the first U.S. pairs team to medal at the World Championships since Kyoko Ina and John Zimmerman in 2002.

“We have a few things we're going to add into our program for Worlds. That should make the difference to get us up on that podium,” Baldwin said.

Any reports on what happened to D/D? Hopefully they can come back with a skate that is more indicative of their ability in the long program.

I'd love to know what happened to them in the short with that score. Given what the report said about all the other skaters in front of them, they must have had huge errors, although their scores don't indicate a fall.

It's reported that D(female) singled or completely botched that sbs 3sal. But that alone wouldn't put them so low in marks.

Yeah, that's why I'm wondering what happened, because normally they are really solid on their elements.
