I remember Jonathan Beyer saying he loved the way they used the silence in Moonlight, especially where he jumps the 3A.

Thanks everyone for your interesting posts. Rabidline, loved how you expressed all the MS gorgeousness with words. Arriba and gacchan, you're also right. Definitely less is more and MS is a work of art.

Loved Itsuki's tweet, thanks for sharing gacchan!

Thanks Arriba for transcribing the Ice Desk comments on Sho, loved them.

I think the medallists received commemorative watches:

In my spare time (watching FS is all-consuming!), I was thinking that Shoma has started the year off quite well (especialyl in Chinese New Year terms) :) so I looked up his Chinese zodiac. I think he is born in the year of the Ox, therefore I found a site which talks about the year ahead. It said that the year ahead has a few curveballs but that a challenge is simply an opportunity to prove yourself.

Further down it says Luckiest Months: February 9th- July 2nd
I thought, which day was the men's free skate??

Dr. Hronop, I really must correct your diagnosis. We don't have Shomatitis, we have Shomaphilia. Or Shomaddiction, if you will. [emoji1]

Welcome, lariko! Enjoy! The irony is, even if we treat the patients in the ShoSPatal, we actually don't cure them. We support their condition.

His schedule is crazy. No time to relax! Off to Japan to resume training and practice! (And some ankle rest, hopefully).

I chose -titis because to me it kind of sounds like a viral infection. And Shoma is surely viral.

So many excellent thoughts on MS, rabidline, and so well expressed in words (I wish I had your vocabulary of English adjectives!). I am a musicologist myself.
I hope to write something about MS sooner or later, but it might take ages. I wish I had more time...

I think one reason why Shoma attracts musicians is because he is one of the very few who are able to 'absorb' their musical material and then express it 'from within'. It's not just some gestures that serve to articulate music, it comes from within, and hence the expressivity. That's why his musicality is so obvious and so powerful, but so difficult to explain and put into words.

Yup, he falls and recovers in tempo with the music sometimes. Well, at least to my eyes, because I am tone deaf :)

The second pic  he knows what makes us laugh and he’s delivering. I hope he gets a lot of sleep these days. He sounds scarily determined, I don’t remember if he ever said so openly before that he’d like to push himself to the limits. Please be careful.

Shoma is scaring us, big time. He is competing tunnel-visioned, so intense, that is why he is so successful.

Wishing Shoma happy and healthy. Fingers crossed for a smooth time til Worlds.

That picture in the green room is so sweet <3 and the one with Mihoko! I don't remember ever seeing her in his blog, but this is a special occasion after all, with the first gold and all XD

Thirding both c3zara and Shedi0806 here, hopefully Shoma can rest, eat his beloved niku, practice effectively, and be at his best for Worlds.

Leaving blank, literally means “leaving white”, painters no need to draw anything on the (white) paper, which contrasts to other parts of painting. However, blank never means empty, and it’s left as blank intentionally. Moreover, the artistry or philosophy of painter is reflected by the parts leaving blank. It’s said that leaving blank is a very difficult technique.

So does the silent element in MS, silence/ quiet never means empty/ nothing, and how to execute this element reflects the artistry of skater.

I remember Jonathan Beyer saying he loved the way they used the silence in Moonlight, especially where he jumps the 3A.

Lovely observations, gacchan and Arriba <3

The comparison with the spaces in the Chinese paintings that are deliberately left blank is particularly interesting. I think what separates Moonlight Sonata from being an empty and uninspiring program is the intent and effort to create and execute those blank spaces, and I agree that it does take a certain level of mastery to be able to do that.

Aaaah, it's nothing compared to your writings, Dr. H! It's mostly me as a new figure skating fan trying to put into words what I found so fascinating about Shoma's Moonlight Sonata.

Ahh, I love your take on it here. I can't speak for all musicians, but I find the way Shoma approaches his programs more similar to a musician instead of a dancer? When I saw him doing his programs in the ice shows and early in the CS series, it felt like I'm watching a musician gradually finding how to best play a musical piece: first finding where to place your hands, how your instrument sounds like, which times you need to change fingers and so on, and then as you grow comfortable with it, it's time to just immerse yourself in the music and find the layers, nuances, details- everything that can help you "bring" the music out with your current abilities.

Especially Moonlight's First Movement- I guess it's because as a pianist for me it's such a tricky piece? It sounds really simple and easy, but when you want to start playing it there's a lot of things you need to be aware of to produce the sound you want: what kind of piano are you using (or are you using a piano at all), do you want to use the damper pedal or not, how long do you want each note of the triplets to be played, do you want to go with Beethoven's instruction on how to play it or do it your own way, and all these small details that you just have to note. So I think I project that a little bit on Shoma, on all the details he needs to be aware of when skating to this music, especially since he said he's a skater that doesn't really rely on imagery in skating his programs but more on the music.

Yes, he definitely relies on music. And having a great 'instrument' at your disposal really helps. I mean his upper body, which I think is one of the best in the business right now.

Thank you for sharing! It sounds like he knows what he is doing, but my heart will be in my mouth till March. I want him to win, but i want him to be one of the few who skate into the late twenties more...

Has this been shared? I find it so cute. Shoma is the responsible one here. https://twitter.com/michlmint/status/1095002168648761357?s=19

Thank you for all your thoughts and the translations! Rabidline, I really appreciate your in-depth analysis of the music and his program. You and Dr. Hronop could write a book about his programs. As Dr H said, it's hard to define Shoma's musicality and his interpretation of the music, yet you did it so eloquently. I enjoyed the discussion on silence. Makes me reflect on its value (thanks too, gacchan and Arriba!). Thank you for the realizations and the wonderful read. [emoji4]
