BTW, Sasha is getting better in her PCS too. Despite her previous coach's controversial statement about how "wooden" Sasha is, any regular figure skating fan can see the difference - just find Trusova's previous programs under that big-mouth Vokov and compare those with current programs now under Dudakov's jumping technique and Eteri's and Daniil's choreography taste. I wonder what that grape-sour coach can tell about "wooden" Sasha? Aleksadnra Vyacheslavovna Trusova - 2-time World Jr champion. Someone get Volkov on the microphone please.
Well, technically that‘s not a very controversial statement. The interview itself was controversial and sounded a lot like sour grapes but this statement is not. Sasha IS a stiff skater, wooden, if you will. Compare her to Alena and Anna, how they move their bodies to the music. She doesn‘t, she skates right through it. So, yes, in that point, I‘d say her old coach was right.
What‘s admirable is, that she became two time Junior Worlds champion despite that, mainly because Eteri found a way for her to compensate her weaknesses by giving her such big advantages over her rivals that what she was bad at didn‘t matter. Let‘s imagine Sasha, Anna and Alena without quads. Alena and Anna would beat her 99% of the time when all three were clean. But now that she has these quads, it‘s a totally different story. Which is just Eteri‘s strategy. Like her or not, she is a mastermind at maximising points. We saw it in the past, we see it now with Tursynbaeva and Sasha and the others.
I have watched Sasha‘s previous programs. Her new programs are better and clearly more suited to her. In her presentation, however, I found a natural evolution of her just getting older and more confident. I think, presentation wise, we can see the biggest differences in Alena. (Which i know many won‘t agree with) She‘s always been a big talent but she‘s really started to shine under Eteri. Her presentation has gradually improved and again, she has programs that play to her strengths. But if we look at Alena from last year and Alena from this year, I‘d say there‘s a big difference in confidence, maturity and interpretation of the music. Sasha not so much. She‘s better than she was three years ago, obviously, but she still skates through the music which is especially obvious in her FS. Her SP is better in that aspect. Sasha is not an artist like Anna and Alena are, she is a performer. She doesn‘t feel the music, what she wants to do is show jumps and impress the spectators with her cool tricks. That‘s okay, then give her programs that do exactly that, like her SP, which is brilliant in that aspect and one of my favorites this season. I hope they can find similar programs like this for her senior debut.
What Sasha‘s improved in most, though, are her spins. She still isn’t the most flexible but compared to last year she has a lot more speed and centering. It‘s very visible. I‘d say, her spins are at the moment, on par if not better than Anna‘s. She might not have the most exciting positions like Anna does (and her illusion really needs some work) but Anna travels a lot, which I haven‘t seen Sasha do all season long.
