2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

^^^^
Not to me she doesn't look 14 years old.
She looks like a 19 year old young woman.

But I'm sorry I misunderstood your intentions.
And I'm too tired to go back and look for the original post.

And as I said the only thing that i don't like about eteri post is that she doesn't try to moderate the comments or just completely ban them for this post

This is Medvedeva-centric thinking. This woman lived in pain, and she shared it because she subconsciously wants support and positive comments. And there is a HUGE amount of supporting comments, just a huge one. Yes, there is a skirmish, but this is a relatively small number of people who argue with each other and write dozens of messages with insults to each other. Alas, but it always happens in any twitter and inst of a popular persona.

It always seemed to me like Evgenia was just ashamed to come to Sambo and talk to Eteri and just ignored her messages and disappeared. But why? Maybe her mother saw what's happening - 3+ new Olympians arriving to practice at the same rink. And maybe she forced Zhenya to move to other coach (Orser was the best option obviously)

Because I'll never forget that Rus Fed press conference where Zhenya and Eteri made jokes and laughed all the time - It was 01.03.2018. after Olympics. And I can't imagine Zhenya made her decision to leave on her own.

@fabienne1996

Also, as a side note, she doesnt try to moderate comments on a post where she describes the death of her mother:

"Страшно это читать и понимать, что взрослая 45- летняя баба сложила ответственность за свою жизнь на 19- летнюю девочку, котораяпрошла через ад "

"It is horrible to read this and understand that a 45 years old woman [pejorative] laid the responsibility for her life on a 19 years old girl, that went through hell"

Because yes, of course, winning silver is hell, and losing both parents in the span of a year is just manipulating people to feel sorry for her.
This is the second comment on Eteri's post, just saying. And there are many others.

But meanwhile, I found no comments bashing Zhenya that were not answers to stuff like I quoted above. There were some comments stating the obvious (some people may take it as bashing, ofc). Of course I didnt dig through all, but just saying.

I disagree Zhenya was forced, she made clear many times it was her own decision.
As for saying goodbye to Eteri, it is hard for a teenager. I remember myself at that age, and sometimes its easier to just run away rather than go and explain yourself. I think Shelepen described something like that in her interview - she just said she would go for a walk, and ran away from a camp, only confessing when they started searching for her and calling. Its not a nice thing, but honestly, if we remember ourselves at that age, sometimes you just cant get yourself to go talk to an adult in a position of authority.

Heck...forget people in a position of authority. When I was a teenager I did crap like that to people that were my own age and I’m terribly ashamed now. If I only knew then what I knew now ;)

OK. This might be fun to discuss, so I cross-post this here too:

It will be Eteri vs The World! :dev2:

Eteri needs to form her own country to give the rest of Russian ladies a chance to qualify for international competition spots.

Even if she did form her own country of Eteristan three spots wouldn't be enough! :drama:

Well, if you think about it tho.. Medal tables of WC2019 could actually look like these.

National teams:

1. Team Russia: 1 gold, 2 silver, 2 bronze
2. Team US: 1 gold, 2 bronze
3-4. Team China / Team France: 1 gold each
5-6. Team Japan / Team Kazakhstan: 1 silver each

Coaches & clubs:

1. Eteri Team (Sambo-70 school): 1 gold, 1 silver (and landed quad in senior Ladies - historical achievement)
2. Haguenauer, Dubreuil, Lauzon, Pinard (Montreal team, Auvergne Danse sur Glace): 1 gold, 1 bronze
3-4. Raf Team (Lakewood ICE) / Hongbo Zhao, Bing Han, Jinlin Guan (Harbin team, Olympic Training center): 1 gold each
5-6. Mozer Team & Trankov (Moscow, Vorobyevi) / Team Brian Orser (TCC): 1 silver, 1 bronze each
7. Zhulin (Olympic club Moskvich): 1 silver
8. Gambill, Zakrajsek, Krall (SC of San Francisco): 1 bronze

So, Eteristan wins the club race and could place second as a national team if imaginary country "Eteristan" had existed. :dev2: Without Eteri Russia won't have 1 gold and would be on the 3rd place in the NT race behind US, China and France, but ahead of Japan and Kazakhstan. :D Therefore, Eteri is like Aliya Mustafina - saving Russia's back since 2014. :)

BTW, @Sam-Skwantch, are you with SC of San Francisco people? Congrats are in order?

Hey, just wanted to point something out real quick. In the interview with Yagudin, Eteri clearly says that the Alina WD was contemplated *during* Worlds, i.e. between the SP and FS. So I'm not sure why folks are speculating it had something to do with the RusFed pressuring Alina to withdraw weeks ahead of Worlds so that they could send Liza or Konstantinova in her place. Even if that happened - and there's no evidence of it, as far as I know - the contemplated WD that Eteri was referring was clearly a separate matter.

Unlike Zhenya, Alina didn't show signs of any injuries during Worlds, so my guess (and this is purely a guess) is that she can some kind of nervous breakdown between the SP and the FS. Even that I find hard to believe, because she seemed pretty composed and focused the whole time, but who knows.

I thought she mentioned they thought about WD on Saturday. Meaning the Saturday prior to the beginning of Worlds competition. I think 'during Worlds' could only have meant 'during the lead up to Worlds'.

Once Alina got to the practices at worlds she was on fire according to all the accounts given. Landing everything. Looking better than she had looked all year. Jumping that crazy combo.

Or as TAT would say - the fire was back in her eyes. :dev2:

Also, I deeply respect her coaching and adore her skaters, but Eteri needs to grow up. Honestly, folks go back and forth about Alina and Zhenya, teenagers who are 26+ years younger than Eteri yet who both handle themselves with more emotional balance, maturity, and integrity than she does. Examples...

• Last year after Zhenya's departure, Eteri leaking Zhenya's messages about not wanting to compete against Alina in the Olympics. (Messages which, knowing Zhenya's sense of humor, may have very well been half in jest.)

• Eteri unnecessarily referencing Zhenya's departure in her Instagram post today. If Eteri's really turned a page, does she have to include this, knowing full well the controversy it will stir up?

• Eteri this weekend disclosing that Alina was contemplating WD from Worlds. Isn't this something that should stay private between the skater and her coaches? Especially if the contemplated WD was because of psychological issues. Again, there was no good reason for Eteri to bring this up, and do so with zero context.

I'm sure there have been instances where Eteri has been justified in feeling wronged; Zhenya certainly could have handled her departure better, for example by showing Eteri the courtesy of telling her in person before it became public. But, again, Eteri is a grown woman and a coach who is supposed to be setting an example for her pupils, who are entirely teenagers and younger. Part of that means keeping your emotions under control and demonstrating grace, poise, and kindness in the face of adversity. Yet, more often than not, it seems to be Eteri who acts like the teenager.

Ah, that's not how I interpreted her comment, but I see what you're saying and how that might be what she meant. Maybe we'll eventually get more context on what actually transpired.

i really don't like this idea of how women should just shut up and keep things to themselves because it might make other people feel uncomfortable. as someone who's gone through a lot in the past year i think eteri's earned her right to write a few paragraphs on instagram about everything she's been through, including her students leaving. she's not acting like a teenager, she's acting like a human. she kept quiet for more than a year, which is a whole year longer than what i would've lasted. "keeping your emotions under control and demonstrating grace, poise, and kindness" is such an outdated view of how women should act. im not saying that women can't and shouldn't demonstrate grace but it shouldn't be the only thing they're allowed to do. there's nothing wrong with speaking your mind in a respectful way.

and for the record i think both zhenya and eteri have shown a lot of poise, i'm sure they've been holding a lot of things back in the past year.

edited to add: i don't remember anyone telling borser to show some grace and poise when yuna left, didn't see anyone telling raf to shut up last year either when he had some words to say about nathan and his family :rolleye:

I actually don't mind her talking about contemplating WD, even if it was for psychological reasons. Which I kind of assume it was given that this season has been hard and the pressure after last year's skate. To me, that makes this victory even more impressive for Alina. To think that she was able to deliver in the face of all that pressure is downright incredible.

I agree that now was not the best time for her instagram post though. I agree that she didn't need to bring up the Zhenya situation right now. She just had two amazing victories and both her students defeated Zhenya this weekend. The classier thing would have been to say nothing since really the results of the weekend says it all.

Nowhere did I say that this is how *women* should act. It's how any adult should act, especially a coach who has an outsized influence on teenagers and children. I'd make the same criticism of, say, Brian Orser when he leaked Yuna Kim's planned programs for the season after she left him. Or Rafael Arutyunyan and the way he gave Eunsoo Lim the cold shoulder after the Mariah Bell controversy this past week.

Also, I was genuinely touched by Eteri's message up to the moment that she mentions Zhenya. Her point would have come through just as poignantly without her dragging her former student, 26 years her junior, into it, which she very well knows will reignite controversy. It tainted her whole message and left the impression that no, she hasn't fully and truly turned a page.

This isn't about telling a woman to shut up. If she had waited a week or two this post would have been a completely acceptable post. The point being that her skaters both defeated Zhenya over the weekend and the timing of this post feels a bit like rubbing it in and gloating. She could have even been vague about it - not the part about her family, that was fine. But maybe just saying that this was a challenging year as a coach without directly mentioning her skater leaving. Because the timing of it comes across as "it was so hard when Zhenya left me...but its all okay now!" like immediately after her skaters won feels inappropriate to me.

Fair enough. I should re-emphasize that it's largely speculation that the contemplated WD was because of Alina having psychological struggles.

But if that was in fact the case, I don't think it was Eteri's place to make that public, especially in the manner she did without providing any context, and especially considering we're talking about a 16 year old girl here.

If it was Alina herself who was willingly disclosing this, I'd applaud her. And, yes, I agree with you that it would make her triumph all the more impressive.

Eteri cannot breath without being wrong.

She, as coach, has all right to disclose such information about the decisions her team makes or doesn't makes. Its not some personal Alina's info.
You could be ultraged, yes, if she told that Alina got a new bf or whatever personal like that that is none of her business.
