2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

She didn't seem to understand what Eteri said, imho.
Leonova said that your medals stay with you forever, while Eteri meant that once you get off podium, you go back to training as before, you dont get any perks or whatever.

They are both right, but Eteri is definitely a believer in not resting on your laurels. In a country like Russia, heck in a rink like Sambo70, there are way too many hungry young skaters coming for your spot in the major competitions. You don't relax until you are ready to put elite level competition behind you.

There is a positive side to that as well - Alina said she puts defeats as well as her victories behind her as soon as they are over. Or at least she tries too. That's a good way to be. Just keep moving.

I actually agree with both ladies. Both are correct. Eteri is not speaking as anything but a hard nosed coach not wanting one of her Champion pupils to get too high and mighty and too much of herself.

The fun part is that Eteri was nearly quoting Irina Viner and her students (if by chance someone doesnt know who she is, she is head coach of the Russian rhythmic gymnastics national team, her students got like 10 olympic medals and 100 world medals, and she is basically the person who gor russians to where they are in rythmic gymnastics).

We can dream, right, that in 30 years Eteri will be where Viner is now.

What happened to Diana where her hearing is concerned? How can she skate and hear the music with impaired hearing? Her story is amazing and her courage to skate with impaired hearing is incredible! I hope they can do something with a cochlear implant or something for her to hear better. I have heard she has hearing loss but I just dont know the details.

I can totally see this! And it might not take 30 years!

PLEASE. I need to know more.
That scenario is actually not entirely uncommon. I was a Division I athlete here in the US and if you got randomly selected for drug testing by the NCAA, they had you pee into a cup with the bathroom stall door open while someone from the testing company watched. Super awkward. We were tested by the same company who ran tests for professional athletes as well.

I'd never seen this before. Great video. I love the part when Eteri and Zhenya are sweetly consoling Diana, and cracking jokes about Eteri's skating days.

Eteri and Zhenya were so natural together, almost more so like friends than coach/skater. Forget who was wrong or right, it's just a shame to see a relationship like that to go up in thin air. I hope they one day reconcile; in fact, I think having the coach/skater relationship out of the way could eventually allow them to be even truer friends.

Thanks to anyone in advance for translating! I agree with Orlov, the 5min I watched were super annoying how she would say like 5 sentences, and it would be translated into 1, even though everything she says is interesting.

A while ago I watched that documentary about rhythmic gymnastics and I was like "Heck, if people think Eteri is bad, they should see this person!!!". I've also watched a documentary about the Vaganova ballet academy, and that seems far worse than the Eteri school too.

The video on gniloe channel was blocked already, but thanks to some people I was at least able to get some of the main ideas.

Well said Doug. They were the dynamic duo of coach and pupil for many years until Zhenya basically ran away from home. They had a very special relationship and did great things together.

That is amazing and so awkward. But it's the sports world we live in today. What sport did you play? My guess is track and field or swimming.

I don’t think that Alina should skate to a warhorse next season, but she probably will. I’m thinking moonlight sonata or rach piano concerto no.2 will be what her coaches give her. Thoughts on Alina’s music next season?? I’m interested to hear what y’all think.

They seem to like the more "theatrical" pieces for Alina where there is a character to play and not just music to interpret - also Tursynbaeva skated to Moonlight Sonata this season.

I bet Alina will have a Les Mis program.
