I propose some elements of statistical analysis over the last 15 years about ice dance.
Preamble: you can notice it to my avatar, I am a big fan of PC. I am confident that they are marking - and will continue even more in the years to come - the history of ice dance and its competitions. But here, I'm not going to drown you under dithyrambic tirades to the glory of my favorites. I'm just going to present some factual more objective than subjective (certainly perfectible, everything can not be compared to everything), which illuminate even more the star PC.

Competitions
Who won the most ISU competitions, which has the highest victory rate compared to the number of participation?
My postulates:
-> I went back to 1995, date of introduction of the GP ISU
-> I only considered the following Senior competitions: GP, GPF, 4CC, Euro, World, OG
Here are the 26 couples who won at least one competition, ranked by decreasing victory rate. In bold, couples in activity.
DW and VM have the highest number of wins (22), PC has the highest rate (... ongoing series)

Highest score ? World record ? Place to % perfect score !
The ISU publishes, in the statitistics section, the Progression of Highest Score. The total score potentially being able to evolve from one season to the next, it is a question of Highest score and not of World Record as many TV commentators can imply.
Here are the theoretical maximum scores since the 2010-2011 season:

 • 2010-2011 : SD 81.00 + FD 118.00 = Total 199.00
 • 2011-2012 : SD 81.00 + FD 118.00 = Total 199.00
 • 2012-2013 : SD 81.00 + FD 119.50 = Total 200.50
 • 2013-2014 : SD 81.00 + FD 119.50 = Total 200.50
 • 2014-2015 : SD 82.20 + FD 120.90 = Total 203.10
 • 2015-2016 : SD 80.20 + FD 120.90 = Total 201.10
 • 2016-2017 : SD 85.30 + FD 124.10 = Total 209.40
 • 2017-2018 : SD 85.30 + FD 124.70 = Total 210.00
 • 2018-2019 : RD 91.52 + FD 137.84 = Total 229.36

Translating, year after year, the score obtained in "% of the perfect theoretical score" makes it possible to erase the changes of notation of each season, and to attempt comparisons and evolutions over several years.

Thus, a couple who skate 90% of perfection will have scored 189.00 in 2017/2018 ... and a score of 206.42 this season.

Since the 2010/2011 season, 10 couples share 64 performances with a score of more than 90% of the perfect score.
In the table, here are the 64 performances above 90% of the perfect score, ranked in descending order.
In bold, couples in activity (ongoing series).

VM scored over than 90% more times (18), ahead of PC (16 - ongoing series) and DW (10).
PC have achieved 8 of the top 10 scores (ongoing series).
The best score 2018/2019 (PC World) is in 5th position; So there has not been a "World Record" this season

And finally, here, season after season, the number of scores> 90% :
 • 2010/11 -> 2
 • 2011/12 -> 4
 • 2012/13 -> 5
 • 2013/14 -> 8
 • 2014/15 -> 1
 • 2015/16 -> 8
 • 2016/17 -> 11
 • 2017/18 -> 18
 • 2018/19 -> 7
There is an "Olympic" cycle every 4 years: post Olympic year with few high scores, then regular progression until the Olympics.
Note also that regardless of this cycle, it is in steady and strong progression. Overall elevation of the level? Scoring more and more generous by the judges ? ... other explanations?

Beyond these elements, I am convinced that Gabriella and Guillaume will continue to offer us performances that will dazzle us more by the excellence and beauty of their dance, than by numbers and statistics. But what this combo is beautiful !

… I only considered the following Senior competitions: GP, GPF, 4CC, Euro, World, OG ...

… DW and VM have the highest number of wins (22), PC has the highest rate (... ongoing series) ...

Whatever … but a fact worth noting is that DW and VM often were competing against each other (GPF, 4CC, World, OG), so a high proportion of each couple's victories was extremely hard-won. Much more difficult to rack up those wins.

(Much moreso than for PC, I would say.)

One can interpret your post about how P&C had it easier by saying they're just that much better than everyone else right now. They have no equals. ;)

Emphasis on "right now." :yes: [Not so as recently as 2018 OWG.]

Meanwhile, the thread title is about "the history of Ice Dance" -- which is a different story from "right now." :)
[In the case of PC, an unfinished story.]

Despite the French's "unfinished story", they still have more wins than either the American and Canadian teams. ;) If you're going to throw in hypothetical scenarios about how it was easier for P&C to win, you should also include that it was easier for D&W to win because Tessa was injured for pretty much 2009-2014; before that D&W weren't really a factor that the Canadians had to worry about. Or how P&C most likely would've won the Olympics if it hadn't been for Gabby's wardrobe malfunction.

Clearly you're miffed that the numbers show that P&C have a more dominant winning streak than the Canadians or Americans. Everything else is conjecture on your part.

Since you are going back to 1990, you should probably go back to 1976 or so to pick up all of the ice dance as Olympic Sport years

My last post in this not-convincing thread:

Not true, according to the OP:

Competitions
Who won the most ISU competitions, which has the highest victory rate compared to the number of participation?
My postulates:
-> I went back to 1995, date of introduction of the GP ISU
-> I only considered the following Senior competitions: GP, GPF, 4CC, Euro, World, OG
Here are the 26 couples who won at least one competition, ranked by decreasing victory rate. In bold, couples in activity.
DW and VM have the highest number of wins (22), PC has the highest rate (... ongoing series) …

As discussed above, I did and do question whether "highest rate" is a meaningful form of number-crunching.

ETA:
I think the same issue would apply to "highest number of wins," TBH.

:rofl: Talk about conjecture. Pot calling kettle black.

"Whatever..." :confused:

A little confused about what you're implying with that....

Different teams have different competition at different times. It seems a little silly to try and immediately discount someone's dominance based on who their competition is.

The statistics presented here are interesting no matter what teams you like/dislike.

That one is my bad. I meant the percentage of wins. Still leads me to my next point:

:rofl: Talk about conjecture. Pot calling kettle black.

Thanks for proving my point?

I crafted that argument to show how ridiculous it is to say "well so and so won but only because this happened". It's a competition and who does or does not compete there or what extraneous circumstances happen is irrelevant. If you're going to claim P&C's wins are less impressive because their competition isn't that difficult, then you have to allow other conjecture to come into play. Picking and choosing is a sign of bias.

And for the record, I don't believe P&C would have definitely won had it not been for the SD. I purely used that as an example.

I probably would've glossed over that post had it not been for the opening "whatever". I think we're on the same page as to why that's a strange way to start an argument. Agree with the rest of your post.

... I think we're on the same page as to why that's a strange way to start an argument. ...

For the record, I was not trying to start an argument.

All I was doing was giving a different perspective -- as we all are entitled to (AFAIK :)).

An argument isn't just heated words between two parties--it can simply be an exchange of differing ideas. The latter is what I meant by "argument".

It can be, but based on the tone of your previous posts, it was hardly obvious that your meaning was on the benign side.
Thank you for clarifying.

So I have another differing idea. :)

… If you're going to claim P&C's wins are less impressive because their competition isn't that difficult ...

For me, wins *can* be more impressive or less impressive -- depending on the strength of other competitors. You don't have to agree with me, but I don't think my opinion is completely wacky or outlandish.

For example:

In Jan 2013, D/W (easily) defeated Chock/Bates for the U.S. title. Another in a string of national titles for D/W.

In Mar 2013, D/W defeated defending champions V/M for the World title.

Do I think D/W's win at 2013 Worlds was more impressive than their win at 2013 Nationals? I sure do. :yes:

You cannot compare that. Just because DW didnt have real rivals in their home country does not make their win less important

I don't disagree but a can of worms gets opened when one starts throwing in subjectivity.

Compared to D&W's win at Nationals, you may think that winning Worlds was more impressive which is fair. However, I can throw in that I don't agree because Tessa messed up her twizzles in the short and made it easy for the Americans to win. This difference in opinion is why something objective like numbers is nice here. The point of the OP wasn't to say either team was better or more impressive. They were just sharing statistics. And of course like anything skating related, numbers and facts are disputed because people simply don't like them.

P&C have a higher rate of wins: fact
P&C have a higher rate of % perfection: fact

Everything else is conjecture.

I don't disagree but a can of worms gets opened when one starts throwing in conjecture and subjectivity.

Compared to D&W's win at Nationals, you may think that winning Worlds was more impressive which is fair. However, I can throw in that I don't agree because Tessa messed up her twizzles in the short and made it easy for the Americans to win.

The point of the OP wasn't to say either team was better or more impressive. They were just sharing numbers and statistics including ones that don't take into account other teams like how close to a perfect score each team has been. Clearly P&C are masters of that despite the rest of the field.

As matter of personal preference, V/M were my favorites throughout their rivalry with D/W (although I liked D/W a lot too).
That said, avoiding mistakes is part of what competition is all about. Although I can wish that my favorites (whether V/M or others in other disciplines) did not make a certain mistake on a certain day under the pressure of a certain comp, if competitor XYZ did not make any mistake (or did not make mistakes as costly), that is to the credit of XYZ, imo. To the credit of D/W, in the example at hand. In my opinion.

The thread title chosen by the OP is: "Papadakis & Cizeron : for the history of Ice Dance"
Which suggested to me that the OP's walls of numbers are an attempt to "illuminate even more the star PC" within the "history of Ice Dance."
I am not so sure that the OP's description of "more objective than subjective" really applies to the first wall of numbers.
(The OP acknowledged that "factual" is something different, and I am not saying that the numbers are not "factual.")

Will steer clear of any discussion of the second wall.
And really will try to stop posting in this thread. I think I have had my say.

ETA (to reply to your editing):
… P&C have a higher rate of wins: fact ...

And it is *subjectivity* as to whether a higher rate of wins means anything when assessing a couple's place in history. :)

(I am of the same opinion re the number of wins, especially as defined by the OP -- lumping GP wins in with GPF wins, ISU championship wins, and OWG wins.)

 • 2010/11 -> 2
 • 2011/12 -> 4
 • 2012/13 -> 5
 • 2013/14 -> 8
 • 2014/15 -> 1
 • 2015/16 -> 8
 • 2016/17 -> 11
 • 2017/18 -> 18
 • 2018/19 -> 7

I can tell you worked hard on this, maybe too hard lol, and your passion for PC I appreciate attempt at objectivity but it doesn't work because that assumes the scoring was objective to begin with. And lets face it 10s in pcs became more prevalent for whatever reason more recently

And it is *subjectivity* as to whether a higher rate of wins means anything when assessing a couple's place in history. :)

(I am of the same opinion re the number of wins, especially as defined by the OP -- lumping GP wins in with GPF wins, ISU championship wins, and OWG wins.)

I don't think wins can outright quantify how great someone is but it does help. ;)

And I do think that anyone would have to be very silly and short-sighted to claim that P&C don't have much of a place in history because they had no competition.

I will give you the benefit of the doubt that you are not attempting to put those words into my mouth.

Cuz I never made such a claim. :noshake:

(Yikes … I keep adding posts even though I keep saying that I am not going to. :bang:)
