Those are the exact ones I would choose too! I'd also add Kamila Valieva's SP too.

By definition giving drama queens attention will not deter them from continuing to stir up drama, it will only egg them on to continue to stir the pot, why else do they stir the pot then to get attention.



I would love if this offseason drama over the song selection resulted in Alina wanting to pick a different song cause I listened to this Billie Eilish for a few songs and thought it was only topped in awfulness by the Ariana Grande that Evgenia is doing at some shows.

I think you are giving U.S. journalists too much credit. I am pretty sure that 99.99% of all sports journalists in the U.S. have never heard of anyone named Terry Tuberidze -- is he a hockey player?

There used to be three sports journalists in the U.S. that covered figure skating: Phil Hersh (Chicago Tribune, now semi-retired), Joann Barnas (Detroit free Press, not so prominent nationally) and Christine Brennan (U.S.A.Today). Otherwise, the most we could hope for from our favorite sports journalist would be his annual screed about why figure skating is not a real sport. ;)

Gala pieces should be fun for the skaters, so I don't see a reason for any of them to change their music if they're enjoying it and are having fun. At least they're different than the rest, and I'm really enjoying it.

Point taken about so few FS journalists in the good ole USA.

Phil Hersch wrote a piece recently I enjoyed. I don't know Joann Barnas and I can't stand Brennan!

Sorry for the OT on this Russian ladies' thread, but I do want to say this. Christine Brennan is not everyone's cup of tea; but she is greatly respected as a singular pioneer and advocate for woman in the field of sportswriting in the U.S. Like all such champions, she had to prove that she could be as tough as a man in order to force her way into this all-male profession. She has many "first woman to ..." 's on her resume and has been a tireless spokesperson for increased opportunities for woean and girls in sports generally. :yes:

well, that guy who skated as red cat to Meow-meow-meow probably enjoyed it, while everybody else was cringing.
 
It"s attempts to influence public opinion in their own interests. Who needs it? Some circles that support several athletes who declare their intention to become the Russian Kostner. In particular, this is Medvedeva, Konstantinova. Naturally this will find support among their fans. Just my opinion.

The previous link is against the age raise and defends the athletes too. I found it to be a nice read.
It seems the opinion on puberty is divisive though.

Same. I can't stand Brennan. I think my favorite is Jackie Wong. (mostly on twitter) His coverage is never petty or catty, he appreciates the jumpers, the artists and everyone in between.

Yeah Brennan is not everyones cup of team. For real She may be an advocate for women but not Russian women. ;) She has always been blatantly anti Russian. She is condescending too and I don't like that in either sex. She referred to Zhenya and Alina as Med and Zagi during the last winter olympics. I thought that was embarrassing for a journalist. Snot nosed condescending too. I have never enjoyed her work and I am American. I dont really care what barriers she broke down. But congrats to her on that. I like Phil Hersch though. He wrote a great article a couple months back on Alysa Liu and the young Russian girls. He is a pro and without that rancor and arrogance of Brennan. Brennan will be out of control with her pro Liu and anti Russian and anti Eteri articles leading up to the Bejiing winter olympics. She is very predictable. ;)

Yes, you totally nailed it. Brennan is blatantly biased against the Russian skaters, especially the ladies. Definitely not an example of a professional journalist. You have to give a credit when it's due and when you don't, I don't care what barriers you broke down, you are not a professional! and you have to be called out for that.
 
I watched the broadcast of Fantasy on Ice last night and for the first time I am disappointed with the Russian ladies, all three of them. Compared to the other skaters in the show, they seemed less prepared. While Javi made a huge flamenco spectacle involving a singer and a dancer, Yuzu and Plushi gave 100% on the ice, Satoko and Rika showed their new and quite original programs, etc., etc, the Russian ladies looked as if they learned about the show two hours earlier and had to quickly think of something. I love Liza but I don't even know what she skated. There was mainly "hand choreography"; nothing special. Alina's version of Carmen seemed half baked. The live violin was amazing, but her performance seemed underrehearsed and not thought out well enough. Medvedeva probably performed best, but I really dislike the Ariana Grande program, the costume, the choreography, everything. She is a great artist, but even that doesn't save the choreo or the lack of it. Besides, she skated this program tens of times already in Canada and Korea, so she didn't have anything especially prepared for Japan.

I was very surprised, because at competitions it is quite the opposite - the Russian ladies have the most rehearsed performances, the most thought out costumes, hair, details, etc. Here I just had the feeling that they perceive the show as a vacation with some skating. That's ok, I know they need a break, but there was a huge audience, which probably bought expensive tickets and they deserved a little extra effort or something special. I don't watch figure skating for a long time, only for a year and I follow the ladies only, especially the Russian ladies. Yet, last night I enjoyed all the other performances but theirs.

I second that. I had a feeling they did not take the show seriously. Satoko and Rika showcased new programs, Plush, Jaci and Yuzu were at their best but all three Rus ladies looked unappealing. Their choreo looked half-baked, and honestly, pretty bad. Very disappointing performances. But they did look beautiful:)
