Can Anyone Explain the Scores of Emily?

I haven't looked at the protocols but the results show she scored higher in PCS than in Tech. I'm not a big Emily fan so the PCS scores are eyebrow raising for me. But the Tech, was off by a lot. Emily did everything clean and she had as much content in her program as others. I say she wuzrobbed on the tech.
Agree?

Three of her jumps were downgraded to doubles.

Frankly, never being a fan of her myself, I'm still puzzled by the two downgraded jumps. The first 3flip was obviously underrotated, but the other 3f+2t and 3lutz seemed fully rotated to me. Maybe some techie on this board can explain to us what happened?

has this been discussed in teh worlds thread... these questions sound familiar?

Here's my question. Does Emily really have what it takes to go to the top? Let's face it, she's always had more "potential" than "results." With the disappointing showing at Worlds, is it time for Emily and Alissa to move forward with their lives away from skating?

With both the ladies and the men tanking, does the US still have 3 spots at next years Worlds? I seem to recall the top 2 spots have to add up to 13- which they both did?

I really don't think any of her jumps should have been downgraded.

It wasn't a great performance, though.

I think Emily should concentrate on school. I just don't see her geting far on the world stage. Now Alissa could get far if she could stand up the jumps, but that has proven very difficult for her. I think I would continue if I still loved the sport. I just don't see either of these girls getting on another world team with all these jump problems. There is just too much competition coming up. If they continue they both need to examine their skating where its wrong and at least try to make changes. Why continue year after year with the same problems. jmo

emily leave?

Emily finished in the top 10 at Worlds. Many countries would be happy with that finish by itself.

Sarah Hughes was much more consistent as a skater but Emily seems to have better jumps (just MHO).

As for Emily and Alissa slinking off and making room for other talent; that other talent has to win in head to head competition against these two.

The US has been fortunate in having lady skaters of consistent talent that are able to finish on top of or on the podium. People are shocked when that doesn't happen at times. There's only been a handful of years that the US has NOT had a lady on the medal stand since 1964. It's certainly nothing to take for granted.

This year is similar to 1993-1994. The US ladies were in a rebuilding phase. What emerged afterward was Michelle Kwan, Nicole Bobek, Tara Lipinski, Sasha Cohen, and Sarah Hughes. There were other talented skaters who would have made Olympic/World teams in the past but couldn't due to the tremendous depth of talent.

If Emily and Alissa move on good luck to them. The younger talent has to make their own way.

interesting

it's interesting that we haven't heard a word from Emily. She would usually brag to the press after each competition.

After the short program, Emily was pleased as punch (rightfully so) with her sixth place finish. An ESPN interviewer asked her how she liked her chances in the free skate, and she was quite up-beat with her answer: I'll just go out there and do my best and see what happens.

But for some reason her high spirits abandoned her in the long program. Her performance seemed slow and labored and I believe the reason why her jumps were downgraded was that she just didn't display the energy on launch that we are used to seeing from her. (A more lively choice of music might have served her better (?))

As for Alissa, I'm with AliceLouise. Alissa's going to come out smokin' next year. She'll tell those whippersnappers Rachael, Caroline and Mirai, now hold on just a minute, missies, your turn is coming, but for now you better get in line, LOL.

Delayed flights affected Emily & Alissa at Worlds?

I was under the impression that both Emily and Alissa arrived in Tokyo later than many of the other ladies because of weather-related flight delays in the Eastern U. S. That can really upset the biological clock and might explain Emily's sluggishness in the LP. This was not mentioned by Dick or Peggy, but I think it was Tuesday before Emily and Alissa got a plane out of the U. S. Imagine a long, long flight and a 12-hour time differential. Can anyone clarify just when both arrived in Tokyo?

I presume that you are talking about Zhang and Nagasu when you say that there is competition coming up and that Emily and Alissa won't get back ont he world stage....those youngsters will not be age elligible for worlds next year so they won't factor into the world team at all.

I don't know when exactly they arrived but they did say on TV that they were delayed getting out and that they never were able to practice on the competition ice due to their late arrival, thus the competition had begun when they got there. So when they took the ice for the SP, that was their first time on that ice. Same thing happened to Michelle in Dortmund, she took the competition ice for the first time for the qualifying round.

I had to wait for the plane to be deiced and missed a day in Tokyo. Better than crashing, thought. I don't know how any US Eastern skater managed.

There is also Wagner and Flatt to consider. They have proven that they can hit the jumps.

If she moves up to Senior, Ashley Wagner will be eligible to compete at Worlds as she turns 16 next month. But Rachael Flatt will not, as (unfortunately) she turns 15 on July 21---20 days too late.

I thought Flatt was old enough. Maybe Bebe has another chance to step it up next year.

If Emily stays around maybe she should let Mark Mitchell choreograph her long program next year. I thought he did a great job with her SP. It seemed to go over really well wherever she skated. I don't think David Wilson's choreography worked for Emily. I also think she should also find another dress designer. Her dresses weren't ugly but they just did nothing to flatter her curves. JMO

Could those scores be improved?

Yes. Emily has capacity for improvement. She is talented. Let's recall that in 2005, she was 3rd to Mao and Yu-Na in Jr. World's and ahead of Kimmie who came in 4th.

Her 2007 World's was disappointing to us fans. There were several things that hindered her: 1) She was a few pounds heavier than at Nationals. She's already taller than a lot of the other ladies. And folks, both make a difference. But she can't do a thing about the latter! In my opinion, an analysis should be made regarding an ideal skating weight for her--and she should attempt to maintain it. 2). Conditioning may also be a factor. Do the seemingly inevitable stumbles (falls) seen in recent competitions signal a lack of stamina? Even so, she did accomplished the same number of triples as Kimmie at World's (a respectable five)--discounting the questionable under-rotations. 3) Should a coaching change be considered? I hope not. Very risky. She seems so compatible with her long-time coach. But I would like to see her staff get outside consultation during the off-season and periodically during the actual skating season.

As to Tokyo, I believe her late arrival did not give her time to adjust to the huge time differential. Same with Alissa. It was reported that both hit the performance ice for the first time in the warm-up to the SP. NOT enough time! The LP was the following day. Still, NOT enough time on-site for aclimation to surface and surroundings for such an important event. Unfortunately, weather-delayed flights were unavoidable for U. S. east coasters.

Emily's performances are infectuous and always well received. Her competitive spirit is a joy. She's one of my favorites and I hope and pray that she remains competitive at least through 2010. Good luck and best wishes to Emily!!!!!! She's a worthy competitor.

I didn't notice the weight difference between Nats and worlds. But it did seem to me that she took somewhat of a step back after nearly upsetting Kim in January. (remind you of anybody? )

Can't do anything about the weather. But it WAS a very disappointing Worlds (for me, anyway). I know the North Americans can do much better than that. The Asians are taking over. The US is lucky to still have 3 spots next year.
